Great for full length portraits and large groups. Good solution for when ceiling and/or walls are far way or are colored to provide soft bounce light - put this up in a corner angled down for an excellent room light. Instead of a thin belt around to keep closed it includes a well made bag to with a velcro flap. This should help protect from other gear (IE stands) damaging while in transit. You Gotta Get One!
While I don't have my own studio, I find often need one for my glamor/fashion shoots. Some studios offer lighting, others do not or you pay extra. I'm a K.I.S.S kinda photog: the simpler the better. This umbrella fits my formula perfectly! As a single light source it is just what I needed: total head to toe coverage, soft, even, wraparound lighting that really does the trick. Umbrellas are like large to giant sized parabolic reflector. Parabolas are technically 'conic sections'. Take a perfect cone; slice through it down to the base, the edge of the cut is a parabola. This shape is more efficient at feathering light.
The important point of the physics of photographically regarding parabolas is they have a focal point. Place light aimed at the focal point and it bounces off the entire umbrella surface at different angles, but when it leaves the umbrella, all the rays are parallel. A great umbrella design, more light reaches the subject. More control. As a comparison, Glow soft boxes were designed to simulate window, light, sky light and north light. Umbrellas can be more compact and quicker to setup than the light bank counterpart.
Another factor in choosing light modifiers: the shape of catch lights in a portrait subject's eyes and the size of the modifier in relation to the size of the subject. The larger and closer the light is to the subject, the softer the results will be as to the transition of the highlight into the shadow. The smaller the size of the unit and the further the distance is from the light to the subject, the harder the effect will be.
