Questions & Answers

PAUL R : Which Epic is best for Spherical panoramas?ANDREW R : I'm not quite sure I understand what you're asking. To the best of my knowledge, all of the GigaPan models support 360 degree panoramic capture. Model choice is mostly based on the type of camera being utilized.
Shopper : I use a Nikon D800 with an Arca-Swiss mounting plate. What additional hardware do I need to connect my camera to the Epic Pro?NILS P : NoneSEAN S : Everything you need to mount your d800 is included with Epic Pro. A mounting plate is included with the purchase.I use the Epic Pro with a d800 300mm f2.8 and 1.4x and have yet to have any issues with the supplied plate.BRAD T : NothingMATTHEW V : You will not need any additional hardware, however, you will not be able use the Arca Swiss plate without an adapter. It will come with the Manfrotto style plate.KENT S : The GigaPan Epic Pro comes with its own mounting plate. The Arca-Swiss style plate will probably be too wide to fit in the recessed clamp on the nodal slide. Most likely you will have to change the camera mounting plate when using the Epic Pro or use an alternative nodal slide such as the Really Right Stuff GP-CB Pkg: GigaPan Clamp Bar + MPR-CL II.GREGORY H : The Gigapan Pro connects to the screw thread on the tripod. it comes with a quick release attachment for going onto the camera. you need to buy the appropriate cable for the Nikon D800.JACOB D : Nothing else is needed. The GigaPan comes with I believe 7 cables for different camera makes, which is all you need to communicate with the uint. It has it's own mounting plate.
Shopper : Hi. I need to know about the maximum weight for a camera that allows the system. Can someone answer me? I own a Phase One, that is much heavier than DSLR. ThanksTAO W : No problemRICHARD W : The GigaPan EPIC Pro can support equipment up to 10lbs.Carole B : I have a D3 that works fine. I have contacted the manufacturer and found them very willing to provide information. Hope this helps.THOMAS M : I have used a 1Ds Mark lll with a 24 - 105 lens no problem.CARIBOU M : I use it with my canon 1dMKIII and 500mm canon, a really heavi gearTHOMAS J : I Have a Phase one also. Epic pro will work fine with the Phase One. A special cable will be needed to fire the camera.JOHN A : I am using a Canon 6D (755 grams) and a Canon 7D (820 grams) along with a 18~105 mm L glass lens (670 grams). The body of the 645 is 1,030 grams. I believe you will have no problem with weight the GigaPan Pro cradle can hold. I do recommend that you get a new tripod that can handle the 8 or 10 pounds that you are going to have on the top. Adorama sometimes has a deal that includes all the cables, an extra battery and most important the backpack camera case - ask them if they have it! It is well worth the extra and the GigaPan Pro does not fit in a regular camera case and is extremely awkward to carry.DEBBIE J : A D3 or 1Ds DSLR body even with just a prime is really pushing the envelope. It seems to have been built more for a 5D / D700 / canon rebel type of body in both weight and size.

Panoramas Made Easy

The GigaPan Epic Pro makes taking very good panoramas easy and the stitching software (Stitch.Efx) is excellent; but very limited in "photo development" attributes. Therefore, it is advisable to develop each photograph in the panorama prior to importing to the stitching software using the same settings to ensure consistency in the finished panorama image. I have had some difficulty is setting the proper field of view, which may be a glitch in the firmware. It is too early to tell. The Epic Pro is fairly intuitive and does not require much training to enable effective use. It is a bit heavy so a stable tripod is essential. The Epic Pro is a great tool for large landscapes, or for indoor shots such as a detailed library wall. It may also have considerable value as a real estate marketing tool capable of 360 degree panos of rooms.

A very expensive tripod head

This is the absolute "must have" for panoramic photography! The robotic tripod head allows for taking panoramics virtually unattended. It is large and heavy so you need a good sturdy tripod for this head. Attaching the camera (I have a Canon 7D) is simple with the foot provided. All the cables you need are supplied, I could not see a mark as to which camera each cable was used for. Setting up the GigaPan is quite simple, the device walks you through. Taking your first set of shots is again a hand holding affair with the GigaPan, it walks you through. I was sorely disapointed with the software. I use camera RAW for shooting - the supplied software is for JPG. This is a small dissapointment as I use PhotoShop anyway. I purchased this as a kit and it came with an extra battery and the much needed case/backpack. I would not recommend not purchasing the kit because the GigaPan will NOT fit in your normal camera case or backpack. Overall I would rate this device as extraordinary! This is not a casual use item, it has but a single purpose and it does it extremely well. Don't think you are going to go merily skipping through the mountains with this device on your back, it is large, heavy, bulky and (again) requires a good sturdy tripod to work correctly.
