I have been using G-technology for almost 9 years. It is the most reliable external drives I have ever used. I had 6 G-tech drives before this purchase, but wanted to simplify the workflow and data management by consolidating them into a single main drive. The new thunderbolt version is a steal for less than ($) for 8TB. It is fast, and I do all of post processing in (still and some video) in this 8TB drive, and bought another one for a backup (I use CCC), then cloud solution for the 2nd backup. I really love this and am very pleased.

These are the most reliable, rugged Thunderbolt RAID enclosures I have come across. They are a staple of my storage planning

So far, so good. I set up for Raid 1 for the back up feature so of course you will not get max performance - RAID 0. But it was still plenty fast=36,000 images were transferred. I bought because 2 of my 2 TB Seagate decided to stop working within 5 days of each other. I have 4 desktop versions and 2 portable versions. I was disappointed and surprised because I never really had any issue in the last 7 years. These 2 that went bad were less than 2 years old-unacceptable!! This G-Tech, is not silent but certainly is not distractingly annoying-to me. Excellent quality build, fast and dependable-so far. That is what I wanted and received!

I had problem using firewire 800 and pro res HQ footage (I keep getting the spinning wheel) but with this unit and thunderbolt the problem was resolved as footage move fast between hard drive and computer.

I bought this to use with my iMac (2011) for video storage and editing. Setup was a breeze; it was all ready to go and works as advertised. Several months ago I had purchased a thunderbolt cable, so it was on hand. Not coming with the thunderbolt cable does add to the cost of purchasing the product. All of my other thunderbolt accessories came with the cable. I really haven't put it through its paces yet, so I can't attest to the speed.

Great performance but the front light stays on unless you power down the unit. Plus the noise level is higher than I expected. Can't beat the speed, though.

The G-Technology 8TB G-RAID External Hard Drive Array with Thunderbolt was designed specifically for professional content creation applications. Featuring powerful, flexible I/O technology, the G-RAID with Thunderbolt is double the data transfer rate of USB 3.0 and over 12 times faster than FireWire 800. Reaching 10Gbps (800MB/s), you'll be able to transfer your media files expediently with unmatched speed.
Optimized for Mac computers, this G-RAID comes Time Machine-ready so all you need to do is plug and play. With 8TB of storage space, you'll be able to back up any important files quickly and efficiently. Also, with built-in RAID 0 support, you'll have better performance since all data is evenly distributed between the two 7200rpm hard drives.
