Questions & Answers

Shopper : The Tech Spec says it mounts onto 3/8-1/4". Does this mean the product comes with 2 different tripod mount fittings? - one for 1/4"-20 and another for 3/8"?Gurb P : My mirrorless camera has a 1/4" thread. What is the camera mounting thread spec? Do I need to get a plate to convert a 3/8 to 1/4? Thanks!DOUG R : Yes, there's an insert adapter depending on whether your tripod/monopod thread is 1/4" or 3/8".THOMAS M : There is a small threaded insert (sleeve-3/8 to 1/4 adaptor)you can screw into the mounting base which will convert it from 3/8-16 to 1/4-20.ALASTAIR M : Yes. It come with a bushing with an outside thread and a threaded hole in the middle of the bushing disk for 1/4" tripod mount. You unscew the bushing for the 3/8" mount.
Shopper : Can this mount be used on a flat board? I am building a custom camera dolly and I would love to use this mount if at all possibleCHARLES C : I don't see any reason you couldn't attach this mount to a flat board. The bottom is completely flat with a female threaded fitting, 1/4"-20 I believe.CHRIS C : I use my Giottos Socket & Ball Head on a monopod to hold my Nikon 5000. It, of course, allows the camera to be moved in any direction and angle and will securely lock in the position you want. I have found it to be very funtional and useful. As long as you include a standard tripod or monopod screw on the flat board you are building, you could attach the Giottos to your board and then use the socket and ball function just as though it was mounted on a monopod. I can't see any reason that it wouldn't be able to do what you want. Good luck!DANIEL D : Yes it can be used on a flat board. That is what I used it for and it worked well. The only minor problem with doing this is that the tension knob (on the side) is slightly crowded once the camera is mounted, so access to it is tight when making any adjustments.TRISH K : Sure--just drill a hole through the board and stick a bolt through it and it will thread into the bottom of the ball head mount. But let me warn you--this ball head is not very strong at all. It would not support my Canon Rebel with a Canon 70-300 (F4.0-5.6) lens (which must not weigh anywhere close to the 7 pounds for which this bal lhead is supposedly rated). This ball head would be fine for a compact camera or perhaps a small SLR with a very lightweight lens.PATRICK M : Yes you could mount on a board as long as you could run a 1/4 or 3/8 bolt through the board to screw it to. The release knob will also be difficult to use as it just barely clears the base. It would probably be best to put a small spacer under it or let the knob hang over the side of the boardTHOMAS M : You should have no problem mounting it. It's base mounts with a standard 3/8dia bolt or 1/4-20 bolt (with their included adaptor inserted). My only concern would be the limited clearance from the bottom of the adjustment knob to your board, that would be less than 1/2inch. Maybe a problem if you have large hands. If I mount mine on a flush surface I usually place 3 or 4, 1 3/4" FENDER washersbetween the head and my board to allow plenty of roomSTEPHEN F P : My device is labeled MH-1304, but looks to be the same. The base is flat and threaded for a 3/8 inch US bolt or screw. IMO it could be easily fitted to a flat board by drilling the board (and perhaps counter-sinking to accommodate the screw-head) and then taking care that the bolt/screw can be made snug - given board-thickness and depth of head threads (plus a possible washer).
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?MARK R : Small and lightweight for mounting on a monopod and supporting a small camera or phonePATRICK S : Built a barn door mount for astrophotography. Needed a ballhead to mount my 35 mm DSLR. Works great.

Nice but for light duty only

This is a nice unit for the price, but would only be suitable for light duty and light to medium weight equipment.

Very Nice Mini ball head

I am using this with the Miops laser camera trigger. Would also work very nice on a small camera. Ball stays inlace and does not move when tightened. 5 stars!

For Light Weight & Small Cameras/Units

I tried on Nikon D7000 plus a zoom lens and it can't support the weight. Understanding that it is for the light weight use but tested and it failed badly for my purpose so as long as you know it is only good for the limited use, the price is hard to beat for the kind. Enjoy...good shooting!

Great little accessory! A must have!

This product is small, compact and versatile. I use it for my Nikon speed lights, my video lights as well as my iPad using the wallee connect light system. I love it's simple functions with one adjustment knob to adjust. It also comes with a screw adapter built right in, a plesent surprise that makes it compatible with other light stands and tripod mounts.

Quality ball head

I was looking for a small head to attach to a new carbon fiber monopod. This unit was just right, light and strong. The clamp holds very well with a medium sized DSLR and small lens, and allows 360 rotation while remaing somewhat level. I'm impressed at how well it works for the small size. Great for when you need a light weight unit for traveling, perfect for small DSLR and compact cameras.

Incredibly small and light weight

Incredibly light and small for it's max load. I bought it to go on the light weight CF Flash Point tripod I'm expecting to use for travel and treking. It looks to me like it will do the job. I wish it was set up to pan the entire head around a verticle axis and included a quick release. I will try to find a quick release I can add. My other tripod setup weighs about 10 times as much. I'm looking forward to using it.

Compact and easy to use.

I attaced it to a monopod for use with a medium weight digital camera. It supports the weight (about 3 lbs.) just fine, with more capacity than necessary. Great value for the price.

Great small ball head!

Good lightweight ball head. I use it on a jobi slr bendable tripod and it is a good fit. It holds my slr and a mid size lens. I also use it a lot to hold an off camera flash. I kinda wish it had a quick release, Giottos makes a similar ball head with one I just decided to go with the cheaper and more lightweight option and I am pretty content.

very nice for the money

Very nice ballhead for the price. I bought this for my monopod. I find it will hold up my Nikon D70 with a Tamron 200-400 at just about every angle. I use it most of the time with a tamron 90mm macro or 50mm sigma macro for flower photos. The only problem so far is the mount plate is rather small and you have to make sure it is very tight, has a tendency to come loose on the 200-400 sometimes.

Improved my simple monopod manyfold

I had purchased a simple monopod but then realized the need to be able to tilt the head. This solved the problem at an affordable price. Good deal.

Great mini socket ball head!

Product easily attaches to monopod. The action is very smooth and completely silent. Most importantly, when I lock it in position it stays in that position. Takes very little force to lock it into place. Great product, great value, highly recommend it for any monopod or even lightweight tripod.

Perfect for monopod

I use this with a Nikon D40x and Giottos MM 9780 monopod. Smooth enough ball head and strong enough clamp for monopod use. It could probably be used on a tripod for just a camera and relatively light lens. Ability to pan is nice. Just barely tall enough to allow verticals (it just clears the camera base of the MM9780 monopod). No quick release is understandable for a low cost, small device. Typo: this is a Giottos MH 1304, not 1302.
