Perfect size for my Mamiya 7II. I would not recommend it for a large DSLR with a large lens.

Nice head for the price

I bought this head with the Gitzo 1932 basalt tripod as part of a Gitzo promotion. I have been very pleased with the ease of use that this head provides. I need to take more pictures to determine the overall stability aspect, but the initial tests have been very good. I have a Rebel Xti and a Tamron 17-55 f2.8 and a Canon 70-200 f4 lenses and both these combinations feel solid on this head.

Good product for lighter SLRs

I have a Nikon N90s. This head was not sturdy enough for this size camera.

Gitzo G1178M Features

  • Made of high quality low weight magnesium.
  • Maximum capacity 8.8 lbs
  • Spirit level to ensure the head is perfectly level.
  • Security locking system for the plate so equipment cannot accidentally fall off the head, even if it has not been locked down. To remove the equipment and plate, simply press the lock release button and slide the plate out.
  • Non-keyed square plate.
    Keeping any side of the mounting plate parallel to the back or front of the camera ensures perfect alignment without having to worry how the plate fits on the adapter.
