Ordered a new arca-swiss ball head, excitedly opened it up to use it, figured out it requires a 3/8-inch 20thread stud, and my old tripod has a 1/4-inch 20thread stud. No go! I had to turn right around and order this adapter so the too could dance! Once this adapter is installed into the base of the ball head, the 1/4-inch stud on the tripod works just fine. Later I upgraded to a Gitzo tripod. The Gitzo is convertible: it comes with both the 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch studs, so this adapter isn't necessary for that style of tripod. I'm still keeping this adapter in my camera bag, it is tiny and light, and could come in handy someday... A web search reveals that most tripods are 1/4-inch, but it appears the high-end stuff goes with the 3/8-inch stud. I wish the liturature was clearer on the stud size of equipment like ball heads and tripods, so folks would know to order this part if needed for their setup. If you're in doubt - just buy it!

So just to make it clear since the description is not too much. If you have a female 3/8 to put on a male 1/4-20 this is what you need. Using it with my old 6x6 camera and my new tripod.
