YIsrael Ori G : BS"D Is there a rebate right now from gitzo on this tripod?.KATHARINE C : I bought one a bit prematurely. It is very high quality, my photography instructor was amazed by it.....we have moved and things changed in my life, we are retired and right now I have been thinking of selling mine.DENNIS L : I do not know of a current rebate on the Series 1 Traveler. This tripod will fit in your suitcase. Do not forget to select a ball head accessory.
Shopper : Has anyone tried putting a head other than the Gitzo Magnesium Center Ball Head for Series 1 Tripods on this, and if so, were there any issues? Can the head be easily removed? Thanks for taking the time to reply!R. E : I'm using it with a Manfrotto ballhead, one of their mid-sized ones. No problems that I can recall getting it on or off. I remember it taking a firm twist to get it loose, but I didn't have any actual problem with it.BO B : I use a Manfrotto ballhead on mine and it works fine. The head attachment accommodates 1/4"-20 & 3/8"-16. So long as your head can be attached to that, you're good to go. I'd just be careful of larger heads that end up exceeding the load capacity of the tripod.DENNIS L : I use a Really Right Stuff BH-55, which is really too big. The head mounts easily and is removed without a problem. I would suggest a BH-40 or another intermediate load capacity head for less weight.YIN L : I use the Markins Q-Ball Q3 Traveler with this tripod and do not have any issues. The diameter of the ballhead matches perfectly with the base of the tripod. The ballhead can easily be removed with unscrewing the ballhead from the base.CHARLIE D : Yes I put a benro head I had on it & worked well with no issues. Standard mounts and removes easily. This is a very solid tripod, you will be thankful you got it.JUSTIN H : I am also trying a black widow jr 3 that just arrived today, I will let you know how that goesJUSTIN H : I purchased and use a Markins Q3t and it is an excellent head and has strong reviews...it is perfectly matched with the tripod and can hold a substantial amount of weight...I believe its rating is even higher than the tripod itself yet is small and lightweight. No issues whatsoever...highly recommended.
NICK G : this tripod says it is 4 sections, but it looks like each leg has 5 in the photo. how many leg sections does this have and does the tripod lose stability when the smallest /thinnest sections are extended? also is it a pain to set so many sections?GEORGE R : It's four sections. The picture looks like it is for another model. I am very happy with mine. Lightweight, compact and very sturdy.RICHARD M : Each leg only has 4 sections. There does not seem to be any loss of stability when the smallest sections are extended. It's no problem to set the sections since you can easily loosen all sections for each leg simultaneously with one hand. My hands are small and I don't have any trouble. It's a great travel tripod. I regularly travel to India on business and it is a pleasure to pack-light and very compact. BetsyCAROL S : Nick, I bought this for my husband, he says he loves it, he set it up with no problem.. Its light and holds his D3 he hikes and this is easy to carry... so I can't tell you more.....DENNIS L : Each leg of the Gitzo Series 1 Traveler has 3 collars to rotate when achieving the maximum height. The locking collars require about 1/4 revolution to unlock. The action is quick and secure. I take the Series 1 with me in my suitcase with a ball head in place. It also makes a fine monopod in a pinch. I mount a Nikon D700 with a 80-400 mm zoom. The result is tack sharp images with a remote release and mirror lock up. I never use my Gitzo Series 3 in the field anymore because it is relatively heavy.BO B : It looks like the photo is wrong for this tripod as there are really only 4 sections. The tripod is a snap to setup, one of the fastest I've tried. The stability is decent, pretty much what you expect with a lightweight tripod like this. It's able to support my Canon DSLR with the 70-200 on it, but on a windy day you might see some shake. But you can't eat this tripod for size and portability which is what I mainly bought it for. Good luck!

Great tripod for mirrorless setups

I own a RRS tripod but have been looking for a smaller and lighter tripod for my Sony mirrorless system. I was debating getting the Gitzo 1544T and this tripod. I couldn't see playing $90 more for a tripod with a shorter center column (which I don't like in general). Plus, I am using the Arca Swiss P0 monoball and wasn't sure if the inverted legs would wrap nicely around the large monoball. On another note, I think if you transport this tripod on the side of your backpack, for example, with the legs inverted the hook will be consistently hitting the ground. A friend of mine has this 1542T tripod and the hook falls out for some reason. And if you turn the tripod upside down the tripod head might get damaged. Neither solution is optimal and I just leave the legs down and bear with the length of the tripod plus monoball. Otherwise, the tripod itself is pretty solid but beware that the bottom legs seem very thin along with the smallish feet. But I believe that the carbon fiber makes up for that in strength and stability.

Perfect Travel Tripod (Almost)

I have several tripods (Gitzo, Manfrotto, and Induro), but I needed a truly lightweight and compact tripod that could bear the weight of my D700 and 5-pound lens and be easy to carry in luggage or in a small back pack. After seeing some strong recommendations for this tripod in the blogs or webcasts of several professional photographers that I admire, I made the investment when this model was offered at a big discount. Even on sale, this is a relatively expensive tripod, but it has proven to be worth the investment. Pros are : 1. At 2.2 pounds and only 16 inches when compacted, it is the perfect size and weight when traveling on aircraft, hiking or back packing; 2. Carrying capacity of 15 pounds is adequate for most of what I do with a tripod; 3. Surprising maximum extended height of 58"; 4. Very stable, despite its slender leg sections and light weight; 5. High build-quality. There are two minor Cons: 1. Non-reversable center column is too long for very low work; 2. 4-section legs. Overall, this is a real winner and was perfect for my purposes.

Great tripod, extremely impressed.

I was hoping for the best and I was not disappointed. I love the way it folds down to under 17 inches. It's light and will fit nicely into my smaller piece of luggage. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Serious hiker

As a hiking enthusiast who loves photography, I wanted a lightweight and compact tripod to carry through our National Parks. I'm happy to say that this does not weigh down my backpack and fits very nicely into my checked suitcase during travel. I made the jump to a professional tripod for a family vacation to Arches, Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point in UT. The weight hook comes in handy to add stability on windy days. Easy to open and fold back up with solid construction. I'm very happy with this tripod.

Travel Me Some World

I took a long time to figure out this purchase. I did a boatload of research and read a lot of blogs to come up with this purchase. For my needs, this set of legs was the best balance of weight, load capacity, and cost. I have a six week long photo trip planned for the second quarter of 2012. I wanted to graduate from my Slik CF714 which served me honorably but was getting a bit too large for convenient handling. This Gitzo was perfectly sized for my needs. Although extremely hard to explain without a photo, the only thing I would encourage potential buyers to think about when considering this set of legs is the unique way Gitzo locks the angle of the legs. It is a spring loaded system which required two hands to operate/adjust rather than the one handed need for the 4-5 other tripod legs I own.

Get what you pay for!!!

Great Tripod! I bought this for a trip to the Grand Canyon and beyond. On the way back out one of my walking poles bit the dust (pun intended), and I opened this up - tied the legs at the bottom and kept walking. It did great for that too and is no worse for ware, still a solid tripod.
