I have bought a few tripods in the past trying to save money, only to learn that you get what you pay for generally. I absolutely love how rock solid this tripod is. I concur with the prior reviewer that the RRS ball-head is the way to go for this tripod....it's an excellent combination. I was at first concerned that it might be a bit short for me (I'm 6' 3"), but I haven't found myself wishing for more height in the first few months of use. I would recommend an upgrade on the feet however as the standard feet aren't of much use on soft carpet ect. Not really an issue specific to this tripod however, just something in general to think about.

This is my first carbon fiber purchase and I was so glad I went "all the way" and bought a Gitzo. Although it is a bit heavier than what I would have thought for carbon fiber, it's a very sturdy base. I use it with a gimbal type head and 500mm f/4 lens, and everything stays as solid as a rock. This is also relatively easy to adjust, a quick twist and the legs easily move.

Coming from the Manfroto 055 I was expecting this tripod to be lighter but not as light as it was. The difference is incredible and without the center column it's way more stable. I was a little worried with some of the reviews I'd read about the height but with a D700 fitted on a Acratech GV2 ballhead it's very comfortable to use (I'm 6'1")

Gitzo is the Rolls Royce of camera tripods. If you want the very best ... buy a Gitzo! This one will last a lifetime and is rock solid!

I usually don't do reviews, but this is my third Gitzo tripod review (see the 3541 and also the 2531). Now, I don't know Chris, who reviewed below, but it just proves that us dudes from Kentucky know what's goin on! Hey Y'all, didja know that KY is a hotbed of fantastic and famous photographers? Betcha didn't know that! Anyway, this is my #2 baby, with a Really Right Stuff BH-50 head. She is everything that #1 (3541) and more, (theoretically a bit more stable). Just a bit shorter, but perfect for 98% of what you use a tripod for. Just don't use anything on top other than a Really Right Stuff head. The BH-50 is the ticket for this baby. Listen, I've used 'em all. Stay away from the pistol grip, 3 lever, even Gitzo's own mag head. The RRS system is the way to go. This combo will improve your photographic results so much that if you don't notice it the first time you look at one of your photos in lightroom (or whatever, for you amateurs) if you can't see the difference you are blind. Although nothing wrong with a blind photographer since great photos are conceived by the brain, perceived by the soul, and these days, the camera auto-focuses, so eyes maybe aren't all that important. Seriously though, along with Great lenses, this is the most important component of a serious professional system. The money spent immediately and directly contributes to better quality images. Don't skimp here. Get the right combo, after you get over the pain of initial expense, you will never regret it! And if you are like me, you will sell your camera and lenses before you let one of these babies go!

I have been eyeing this tripod for a long time, and finally made the investment. It is just as nice as everyone says it is. Solid construction, made with an eye for detail. The leg locks are very convenient, too. What a thing of beauty and an investment for a lifetime. Now I wish I hadn't waited so long to order one!
