If you use this with HDMI input, it's good. But with anything else, Balance is off, software is the worst thing in the world. This has tons of menus that won't give you any control. Network, airplay is awful, sound is awful Software update is not present Company is not supporting their product. Last time I buy Harman Kardon

I bought this around a year ago. I was very excited to receive this receiver. Things shortly changed after I bought it, it didn't look anything like the pictures on the harman kardon website. Especially the back. looks don't matter though. just something to keep in mind if you are going to buy one. However the entire surround receiver lineup in 2015.... The Bluetooth is very poor, no clarify technology like in the car systems. and there is no Logic 7 Processing... Now on to what I like about the receiver. I really Love the harman NSP for 2 channel signal. its something I would never be willing to give up. and it's sad harman kardon won’t be making any more receivers. they quit production in 2015. I'm definitely going over the wattage limit. in total all my speakers add up to a huge 840 watts and that is with my klipsch. The mic that comes with this system is disgusting compared to the 2009 lineup. but the calibration built into the system seems to be a lot more solid in terms of distance and eliminating reverb. this system seems to be lacking detail in the treble (music only) with movies and games, its excellent. but with music, it’s different. I don't have subs and i set it up with no subs. I'm glad there was an option for no subs in the calibration setup. As you can see, the receiver is driving some big speakers. and i use a full spline dsp that starts at 16hz and goes up to 32khz. optimizing the sound for the 7 channel stereo and NSP, it makes it sound sooo much better than it already does. and it makes the sub bass really noticeable. As it should be. It is a crazy setup because of the watts and amps this takes. but it sounds amazing. if i didn't have the DSP for my music. it would be a huge let down. because this receiver lacks detail and sub bass (as expected because i have no subs) but I have unlimited excursion with my speakers.

Just set this up with the JBL Stage Series at 7.2 with the JBL Studio Sub 260(s). For music it's great, for movies.......OH my..my neighbors will be able to tell when I'm watching Avengers Endgame this system is so intense. The distortion is pretty low even when turning as close to all the way up.I love it.

My personal stereo has good RBH speakers, but I noticed my old amplifier did not provide enough power to really take advantage of the speakers. I had many requirements for the replacement: I wanted a new integrated amplifier to deliver at least 100 watts per channel in stereo, with separate subwoofer output. Also, because of space restrictions the amplifier had to be less than 12 inches deep. This left me with very few choices. One amplifier from Pyle which probably was not the highest quality, the HK 3770 and the HK 1710s. I only needed the amplifier for my stereo, so I did not need a 5.1 or 7.1 home theater system. Blue Tooth was a desirable but not necessary feature. I was ready to buy the HK 3770 but after I asked the question, I was told this amplifier did not have control over the cross over frequency to the subwoofer. I felt this was a necessary feature to optimize my speaker set up. So, I went for the HK 1710s even though I knew I would be paying for lots and lots of features and connections I did not need. Well, I installed the new amplifier and I am happy to report that the Harman Kardon avr 1710s “made my speakers sing”. Beautiful sound! I read a lot of complaints about the user interface and the remote. Yes, it would be nice to have bigger keys for the volume control, but the remote and user interface are adequate. I was able to set up the system very easily… even more so with only three speakers, one optical digital input and one analogue input. One feature I appreciate is the direct digital input, to let the DAC in the amplifier do the conversion. HK’s DAC plus its processing options are way superior to the DAC in my CD player. I hope the product is durable, but only time will tell.

I bought the AVR1710s in May of 2018 and was sad to see that after 20 years of buying Harman Kardon receivers, this was most likely the last that Harman Kardon would be producing. My first Harman Kardon receiver was the AVR320 and it was amazing... I later purchased the AVR120 as well for a secondary room. I then upgraded my AVR320 to an AVR325 and the AVR120 to an AVR225. I also purchased an AVR1565 for a secondary home back in 2013 and recently decided to get the AVR1710s to run a 7.2 system. I was sadly disappointed when I found that my front right channel was firing with much more power than the front left channel. So much power that the sound coming from the front right channel could damage my drivers while all other speakers in my system are firing normally. I switched my left speaker wires into the right channel inputs and then it acted the same way. So I have eliminated the possibility of it being an issue with my speakers or wiring. I have spoken with Harman Kardon and they were unable to help me only providing me with very generic solutions like adjusting the ez-set, checking the cables, all of which I've already completed. When I asked about sending it in for repair, or exchanging it for a different one, they claimed that the dealer I bought it from was not an authorized dealer so they won't honour the warranty. I've been a Harman Kardon fan for the past two decades... while I'm sad to see them stop producing AVRs, I'm equally disgusted with their lack of effort to help right this wrong. All I wanted to do was enjoy my final Harman Kardon purchase, but instead, all I have is a sour taste in my mouth :(

Defective units. On my second1710S and is giving me problems. Emits constant thump, thump, thump sound from the sub while connected (Sub is fine and doesn't make a sound when disconnected from the unit). Remote supposed to turn Unit and TV off when unit is switched off but only TV goes off and the unit stays on. Have to manually turn off the unit by pressing AVR and OFF buttons second time. AVOID LIKE A PLAGUE. Save money and invest in a YAMAHA instead. HCG Customer Service is BAD and that is an understatement. Replies to email come when they feel like it (2-4 days) and options (instead of helping to offer steps to troubleshoot systematically) they suggest are Ludicrous.

So I got this a week ago, I think I can give a basis on what this receiver is good at and what it lacks.... I love the detail and clarity. It’s very Mid based on the audio spectrum. The mid range in this system is magical. There is a difference between audiophile sound and studio sound. This receiver by no means is studio related. But it does to direct format from sources like Dolby and dts. Up to 7.2 channels. Don’t worry if you don’t have a subwoofer. This receiver has a tone of bass. But it’s not up front Bass. Picture and 70/80’s cabinet speaker. As of Bass it goes very low and sound very nice, and there is little distortion. I am using klipsch reference speaker. So it might be different depending on your speakers.... You won’t be disappointed. I was smart and bought this refurbished for 220$ so for me this is a even better deal but even for 550$ this is a good deal.

I have had this receiver for a few years now, and it has been great. The only issue I am having now is that when I decided to connect my Bravia TV to the receiver via ARC HDMI cable, the TV will intermittently switch over to TV speakers and not audio speakers upon turning on the TV and receiver. I had it fixed a couple times then again it will mess up. My guess is there is a "handshake" issue and it happens about every 3rd time I turn the TV and receiver on. I have had tech support on the phone many times, and there appears to be no fix. It could possibly be the TV not being very compatible with the 1710.. I'm not sure. When it works correctly, it sounds amazing.

The fan in the rear of this unit has yet to work since received. Can’t play music on July 4th due to heat wave bc I don’t want to hurt the avr

Got Home from work today and found this on my front porch set up was a breeze took all but 20 minutes and then spent the next hour or so tweaking very easy to learn basics no need for manual maybe later this weekend when I configure it on my network but for now was eager to get it up and running so I could relax with some music (for now I've been streaming progressive rock (Emerson Lake & Palmer and ...) From an iPhone through a Klipsch 5.1 Speaker setup via bluetooth using the Surround Neo:6 for music setting on the receiver and I can't tell you how pleased I am with the Sound reproduction I'm hearing just out of the box with a little manual tweaking very impressive and can't wait to spend the time this weekend configuring the network, set up AirPlay and calibrating the room to get the full potential out of this receiver. A definite Best Choice for the technology packed full featured little powerhouse this is and what makes it is the very reasonable cost to feature to quality ratio.

Replaced a HK receiver I bought in 1994 (still looks and sounds new). My 1st actual avr receiver and it sounds great. Matched with HKTS16 speakers and sounds great. Just bought a 2nd set of same speakers while on sale to complete a 7.2 system
