A spare battery is a necessary. It will extend your shooting session and be there as a backup in case your current battery dies for some reason.

Needed accessory

A spare battery is absolutely necessary, especially for the X1D, which doesn't have the best battery life. With one spare, I can get through a full day of shooting. If I were to get through the evening as well, I would probably get a second spare.
