The 'IRND 2.7' refers to the filter's density, which is 2.7 or 9 stops. This means it reduces the amount of light entering the lens by 9 stops, allowing for greater control over exposure in bright conditions.
The primary function of this filter is to reduce the amount of light entering the camera lens. This allows for a wider aperture or slower shutter speed to be used in bright conditions, facilitating creative effects such as a shallow depth of field or motion capture.
The Hoya SOLAS IRND filter maintains a neutral color rendition throughout its density range. It suppresses IR evenly across red, near-IR, and IR areas of the spectrum to avoid spectrum spikes that can add a color cast to the image.
Unlike regular ND filters that often have a transmission spike in the near infrared area of the color spectrum leading to color casting, the Hoya SOLAS IRND filter is designed to evenly suppress IR across various areas of the spectrum. This ensures no spectrum spikes that can add a color cast to the image.

The filter works beautifully. I recently dove into the video editing realm and found this ND filter to be quite useful. Now I realize I should also get a 3-stop, the 6-stop filter is too powerful for indoor use.

The filter is well made. It is effective for IR landscape photography to include waterfalls. I did not notice any color shift when using this filter.

Because capturing the perfect shot requires precision and control, the Hoya SOLAS IRND 2.7 52mm Infrared Neutral Density Filter has been meticulously designed to offer photographers an unparalleled level of light management. Utilizing the most advanced materials and Japanese manufacturing techniques, these high-quality filters maintain a neutral color rendition throughout their extensive density range of 0.3 to 3.0.
Unlike many ND filters on the market, the Hoya SOLAS IRND filters take into account the impact of IR (Infrared) light on color. As digital imaging sensors have evolved to become increasingly sensitive to light, they have also become more prone to overexposure and heightened sensitivity to infrared light. To combat these sensor issues, Hoya developed the SOLAS line of IRND filters.
These durable filters are available in densities of .3, .6, .9, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 2.7, and 3.0, offering 1~6 plus 9 and 10 stops light reduction while maintaining an impressively neutral color balance. This effective light reduction allows photographers to utilize very wide apertures or very long shutter speeds in bright lighting conditions, providing versatility in capturing the desired image.
Unlike standard ND filters that often have a transmission spike in the near infrared (High Red) area of the color spectrum, leading to color casting, the Hoya SOLAS IRND filters are designed to suppress IR evenly across red, near-IR, and IR areas of the spectrum. This prevents any spectrum spikes that can add a color cast to the image.
The combination of IR suppression and precise color balance through the use of the latest ND materials ensures that the SOLAS series maintains a neutral color balance that is consistent in every density throughout its range. Available in standard sizes from 46mm - 82mm, the Hoya SOLAS filters are an essential tool for photographers seeking to enhance their infrared photography capabilities.
