Questions & Answers

Ross F : How well will this work with a near-IR film like Ilford SFX?
Shopper : will this fit a Nikon lens?RICHARD R : The Hoya 52mm R-72 filter will fit any lens with a 52mm filter thread size. Most zoom lenses have larger front diameters and, hence, large filter thread sizes. Typical sizes are 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm, etc. You will need to get the filter size that matches the lens you own. If you have more than one lens and they take different filter sizes, then I recommend getting filters that match the larger lens and a "step-up" ring to adapt the filters to the small diameter lenses. Hope that helps.FREDERICK P : The lens should fit any 52mm lens. This is an assumption that the threads on all cameras are standard.CAMERON P : It will fit a Nikon lens so long as the lens is the same diameter as the filter.BILL D : That depends on the Lens. Look at the lens cap, the part that faces the camera. There usually is a stamp indicating the mm of the threads on the lens. Stick with that and you'll be fine. I have Hoya 52mm and it fits my 18-55mm and my 35mm lenses.SHARMAN P : It will will fit some; any that take a 52mm thread.MORGAN H : Yes. They are specific to the lens diameter. You'll need to look for that on your lens. It is marked with a ø sign so for example a 52mm filter will fit a lens with a diameter of ø52. There are also simple charts online that convert Nikon lenses to filter sizes.James O : Yes, so long as the diameter of the end of the lens is 52mm. Some are different sizes so you have to be sure.
traelynn n : Can I use this filter with Canon ef lenses?SHARMAN P : Unfortunately I know nothing about the canon EF lenses. I used the filter with a traditional film camera and Agfa IR film. There is a forum on all things digital and more that is very helpful. dpreview I'm certain someone can answer your question.traelynn n : Thank you for the information Eric, Traelynn :)ERIC S : First off, I use Nikon. I don't think the type of lens is of any concern as long as its the correct filter size. What you want to know more likely is, if your camera is sensitive to IR enough to bother tryng. You need to search about that. Generally speaking, the newer the models are less and less sensitive due to the IR blocking filter in front of the sensor (regardless of brand)BILL D : Sure as long as it fits. Remember that this is a very dark filter so you have to manual focus before putting it on and use a tripod. Exposures of 30/45 sec is not unusual even in full sun.

I've always wanted to to try ultraviolet photography, I'm so glad I finally did. The photos are amazing.

This filter is crazy. I'm using it on a fujifilm x100v When set to B&W you get amazing shots. Then I tried it when set to vivid and the shots are out of this world. Buy one you will not regret it.

A Fun Filter for My Iphone

Bought this filter to use on an iphone mount. Its been lots of fun looking at the same scene in a new way. I don't have any other experience with infrared so can't provide any insight into the "quality" of infrared production but they look good to me!

Great fun for simple IR photography.

I previously owned the 52mm R-72 filter and used it on the APS-C Sigma 30mm f1.4 with some success. I purchased the 58mm size so I could use it on a few different Fujifilm APS-C lenses (e.g. XF 23mm F1.4 R LM WR). It has helped me in taking some interesting black and white IR-ish photos and I hope to further experiment with it (while working on my post processing technique). Be prepared to get out a tripod for long exposure times or shoot wide open in the middle of the day.

Hoya Infared above the rest

Hoya performed better than Breakthrough and Haida on my Canon Wide angle lens. Very nice infared filter. Tested all three and happy Hoya worked well with my 15-35 and 24-70 lens.

Fun Fun Fun for under $100.

Have went out 3 times now with this new filter. Love it!! works best in bright sun mid day. Just another toy in my collection. One that lets me enjoy photography when most other types of photography does not work (high noon). You will potentially get a hot spot in the middle that is caused by lens selection and not shooting relatively wide open. However by testing thru a few lenses and F-stops i have it nailed now. Again great toy for under 100$. Watch some youtube videos on processing the photos and how you need to download and use the free Adobe DNG editor to create a profile for your camera.

Fun to play with

Fits well. Fun to play around with IR photography. Still passes a little bit of visible red light-unsure how sharply it tails off at 760mm. With long exposures, can clearly see IR glow of plants.

Recommended Infrared Filter

This is an excellent way to experiment with infrared photography. The only challenge is focusing the image. Due to the fact that my lenses did not have the infrared focus adjustment marks, I had to experiment with a few photos to get the images clear. Just a suggestion, but it is best to shot the images in raw and also to have a custom white balance . It is a fun way to explore this kind of photography! I would certainly recommend this option if you don't want to modify your camera, and this filter tops them all .

Black and white infrared shooter

Love this filter. It might be a bit on the pricey side, but money well spent if you are experienced with black and white infrared photography. Renders beautiful contrast. Solid construction and glass quality is quite good.

Amazing filter, great quality images

Have used this for a few landscape shots and I was blown away by the images it produces. Good quality coating as well, seems like a solid filter. Could be cheaper but I didn't want to skimp out and get a cheap filter that would have adverse effects.

Stunning Effect

By Jacob J.

After viewing some spectacular images on the internet, I purchased the R72 filter simply to play in the infrared spectrum without the high cost of sensor stripping. I mount the filter on top of a rotating circular polarizer and generally shoot between 0.5 sec and 20 sec. tripod-stabilized exposures. Simple Photoshop workflows render stunning results. For an inexpensive introduction to IR photography, this is an amazing bargain.

Nice fit for an olympus E510

By Big J.

All of my worries were gone after I saw that first photo, the hoya rm-72 filter is a good match for this camera. I bright sun my exp time is anywhere from 4 to 6 sec. at f8 and an iso of 400. The other thing that I like about this filter, is that if you let your eye adjust for a few seconds you can see well enough to compose your shot though the view finder. Over all this p...

A gateway to the unseen world, the Hoya R72 Infrared Filter unlocks the potential for photographers to explore the ethereal beauty of infrared photography. This high-quality filter is meticulously crafted to cater to both digital cameras and infrared-sensitive film, allowing you to delve into a spectrum of light that extends from the deep reds at approximately 750nm to wavelengths beyond 1000nm, which are invisible to the human eye.

With its durable construction, the Hoya R72 appears nearly opaque due to its precision-engineered coating that selectively transmits light from the extreme red edge of the visible spectrum along with infrared light. This characteristic makes it an effective tool for capturing the surreal contrasts and altered realities that infrared photography offers. Subjects illuminated by infrared light reveal unique textures and contrasts that conventional light does not expose, presenting photographers with a canvas for stunning and creative imagery.

The versatility of the Hoya R72 Infrared Filter is evident in its ability to reduce haze and enhance contrast, particularly in landscape and nature photography. This results in crisp, clear images even in challenging lighting conditions. Its ease of use is appreciated by photographers of all levels, from enthusiasts experimenting with IR photography for the first time to seasoned professionals seeking to add a distinctive look to their portfolio.

Whether you're aiming to achieve dramatic skies, otherworldly foliage, or to experiment with black and white IR films from Europe, the Hoya R72 is an indispensable accessory. It is especially useful for rangefinder camera users, as the filter's opacity necessitates focusing prior to its application.

Crafted by Hoya, a brand synonymous with optical excellence, this infrared filter promises consistent, reliable performance that aligns with the rigorous standards expected by photographers around the globe. Choose the Hoya R72 Infrared Filter to transcend the boundaries of traditional photography and venture into the intriguing and visually rich realm of infrared imaging.

  • Works well with digital cameras, especially mirrorless cameras or DSLRS with no IR blocking filter in front of the sensor. (Please check your camera's owners manual)

  • Consistent quality, made in Japan
  • Can be paired with colored black and white contrast filters such as the R25 (red), K2 (yellow), O (orange) or other color filters to change the color rendition or contrast effects.
