Questions & Answers

Irwin W : will Hoya 58mm -72 Infrared Filter work on a Canon 40D?KENT K : Absolutely not. The 40 D is a digital camera. This filter is used with specialized IR sensitive film. There are ways of shooting IR with a digital camera, but you have to bush into the firmware of your camera. From that point the camera is committed to IR and nothing else.DANIEL I : I don't have a lot to add to the previous answers to your question. I will add something that may or may not be useful to you. Photographers who want to do infrared photography spend a lot of money on camera's. They then spend a lot of money converting their camera to remove the I/R filter. There is a much simpler solution that most folks don't realize. The Sigma camera bodies have a removable I/R filter. You don't need tools to remove/re-install the I/R filter on Sigma camera bodies. So if infrared photography interests you, you may want to take a look at a used Sigma camera body. Many can be had at less than the cost of the I/R conversion itself on other bodies. Of course you would then have to buy a Sigma (mount) lens as well. Again, this may not be useful info. but I would only be repeating what the other folks already stated.LUIZ O : Yes, but it will require long exposures and tripod. The best way to do infrared photography is to use a filter like this in a camera that has had its infrared blocking filter removed. Google lifepixel and you will find a bunch of information. Once a camera has the internal filter removed, it becomes a full spectrum camera and you can attach different types of filters like the Hoya and the image quality will be better and not require long exposures. Almost any camera including the 40d can be converted. I would recommend using a camera that has live view.RONALD M : It depends on which lens the 40d has on it. If it's a 58 mm lens is the only way it would work .RALPH M : The filter will be on the lens itself. So as long as lens is 58mm you should be good.
Ron G : is this for a Nikon D7000?CHRISTIAN G : This filter is for a lens with 58mm ring size. The lens could be attached to a Nikon, Canon, Sony, or other camera body. It only allows infra red (non visible) light to pass through. Since most cameras (Including the D7000) have an infra red filter (which blocks the light that this filter allows to pass through) you have to make sure the camera can handle it. My Canon 30D can use it, but exposures have to be 15 seconds at a minimum. You need a bright, sunny, windless day, and a sturdy tripod to make it work. You will also need some basic Photoshop skills to convert the resulting picture from Maroon and Black to White and Black. I apologize if I'm giving you information you already know, I couldn't tell your level of experience based on the question. A quick google search makes me think the D7000 is capable, but takes a bit of research and practice to make this type of photography work. Search "Infra Red Pass Filter Nikon D7000" and see how others have fared. Best of luck!
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?DAVID M : Was recommended by JulioISAAC H : InfraredDAVID A : Hoya has the size and specs I need for my camera. I have other Hoya filters and they are of good quality without being too pricey.ROBERT D : I want to try out it photographyJOHN S : I want to explore IR photography with my mirrorless digital camera without having to have the camera converted for dedicated IR shooting.MARIE R : Hoya is the tried & true, and somehow the cheapest 58mm on the market right nowJalen S : Cost EffectiveCONNIE C : less expensive than others and dont want to spend too much not knowing if it will fitJOHN C : I have the inexpensive Neewer infrared filters but I wanted to try something of a higher quality (presumably) and Hoya filters have a good reputation.CESAR M : I want to try experimenting with Infrared/Color Channel Swapping Photography and Video.

I've always wanted to to try ultraviolet photography, I'm so glad I finally did. The photos are amazing.

This filter is crazy. I'm using it on a fujifilm x100v When set to B&W you get amazing shots. Then I tried it when set to vivid and the shots are out of this world. Buy one you will not regret it.

A Fun Filter for My Iphone

Bought this filter to use on an iphone mount. Its been lots of fun looking at the same scene in a new way. I don't have any other experience with infrared so can't provide any insight into the "quality" of infrared production but they look good to me!

Great fun for simple IR photography.

I previously owned the 52mm R-72 filter and used it on the APS-C Sigma 30mm f1.4 with some success. I purchased the 58mm size so I could use it on a few different Fujifilm APS-C lenses (e.g. XF 23mm F1.4 R LM WR). It has helped me in taking some interesting black and white IR-ish photos and I hope to further experiment with it (while working on my post processing technique). Be prepared to get out a tripod for long exposure times or shoot wide open in the middle of the day.

Hoya Infared above the rest

Hoya performed better than Breakthrough and Haida on my Canon Wide angle lens. Very nice infared filter. Tested all three and happy Hoya worked well with my 15-35 and 24-70 lens.

Fun Fun Fun for under $100.

Have went out 3 times now with this new filter. Love it!! works best in bright sun mid day. Just another toy in my collection. One that lets me enjoy photography when most other types of photography does not work (high noon). You will potentially get a hot spot in the middle that is caused by lens selection and not shooting relatively wide open. However by testing thru a few lenses and F-stops i have it nailed now. Again great toy for under 100$. Watch some youtube videos on processing the photos and how you need to download and use the free Adobe DNG editor to create a profile for your camera.

Fun to play with

Fits well. Fun to play around with IR photography. Still passes a little bit of visible red light-unsure how sharply it tails off at 760mm. With long exposures, can clearly see IR glow of plants.

Recommended Infrared Filter

This is an excellent way to experiment with infrared photography. The only challenge is focusing the image. Due to the fact that my lenses did not have the infrared focus adjustment marks, I had to experiment with a few photos to get the images clear. Just a suggestion, but it is best to shot the images in raw and also to have a custom white balance . It is a fun way to explore this kind of photography! I would certainly recommend this option if you don't want to modify your camera, and this filter tops them all .

Love this filter. It might be a bit on the pricey side, but money well spent if you are experienced with black and white infrared photography. Renders beautiful contrast. Solid construction and glass quality is quite good.

Amazing filter, great quality images

Have used this for a few landscape shots and I was blown away by the images it produces. Good quality coating as well, seems like a solid filter. Could be cheaper but I didn't want to skimp out and get a cheap filter that would have adverse effects.

Stunning Effect

By Jacob J.

After viewing some spectacular images on the internet, I purchased the R72 filter simply to play in the infrared spectrum without the high cost of sensor stripping. I mount the filter on top of a rotating circular polarizer and generally shoot between 0.5 sec and 20 sec. tripod-stabilized exposures. Simple Photoshop workflows render stunning results. For an inexpensive introduction to IR photography, this is an amazing bargain.

Nice fit for an olympus E510

By Big J.

I was a little worried about the ability of the E510 to take good infrared photos with the ir cut filter still in place. All of my worries were gone after I saw that first photo, the hoya rm-72 filter is a good match for this camera. I bright sun my exp time is anywhere from 4 to 6 sec. at f8 and an iso of 400. The other thing that I like about this filter, is that if you let your eye adjust for a few seconds you can see well enough to compose your shot though the view finder. Over all this p...

Why settle for ordinary when you can explore the extraordinary with the Hoya R72 Infrared Filter Specifically engineered for infrared photography, this 58mm R-72 filter is compatible with both digital cameras and infrared film, making it a versatile addition to your photography toolkit.

Infrared light, which begins in the high-red area of the visible spectrum at around 750nm and extends beyond 1000nm, is not visible to the naked eye. However, with the Hoya R72 filter, you can capture this invisible spectrum, opening up a world of creative possibilities.

When you look through the R72 filter, it appears almost opaque. This is because it's designed to pass only light from the very high red edge of the visible spectrum and infrared light. This unique feature allows you to capture images that reflect infrared light differently than normal light, resulting in intriguing and sometimes stunning photographic results.

It's important to note that due to the nature of infrared light, the filter factor and exposure compensation can vary significantly from visible light and largely depend on lighting conditions. Despite this, users have found that with a bit of practice and adjustment, they can achieve the desired effect, even in bright sunlight.

Moreover, this filter offers the added benefit of being able to compose your shot through the viewfinder after a few seconds of eye adjustment. This makes it a practical and valuable tool for photographers looking to experiment with infrared photography.

In summary, the Hoya R72 Infrared Filter is not just a lens accessory, it's a gateway to a new dimension of photography, allowing you to explore and capture the unseen world of infrared light.

Hoya R-72 Infrared Filter Features

  • Works well with digital cameras, especially mirrorless cameras or DSLRS with no IR blocking filter in front of the sensor. (Please check your camera's owners manual)
  • Only passes light at 720nm (high-red) and above. Gives more predictable results than filter that only pass Infrared light above 850 or 900nm.
  • The Hoya R72 is constructed using high-quality optical glass from Hoya mounted in a precision milled aluminum frame that provides rigidity.
  • Consistent quality, made in Japan
  • Can be paired with colored black and white contrast filters such as the R25 (red), K2 (yellow), O (orange) or other color filters to change the color rendition or contrast effects.
