Kirsten Z : Is this filter safe for viewing the solar eclipse?BRIAN O : NO! This is a polarizing filter; it only filters out certain light rays. Its purpose is to enhance contrast and reduce glare in photos. You should observe the sun ONLY with a filter that meets the relevant ISO standard, and unfortunately, there are many unscrupulous vendors who are lying to customers, claiming that they meet the standard. The American Astronomical Society has a list of approved vendors; I can't link to them here, but you can do a web search for AAS reputable vendors of solar filters and viewers.NEIL L : No.

It will kick up what you are looking for. When I made my selection I made a series google searches on the specific filters and looked for reviews. But for a filter, the only take away message is, DO NOT GO CHEAP. A cheap filter will wreck your shots, particularly in bright light/sun. I bought a cheap $7 filter once and it was horrid. Balance what you can spend verses good reviews. Hoya makes a good product as do some others. I'm only a poor enthusiast so I read a lot before making a purchase. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I buy one for each lens

Here is a good example of what this filter can do. Out of the box, on the camera and quick test photos of my dirty car. Both photos with the filter on the lens. One with max polarization and one with minimum. Raw photos, only resized and converted to .jpg to post. Canon T8i / 50mm 1.8 / 49mm CPL filter

Big improvement

Big improvement over my cheap polarizer. Colors are more vivid and haze is gone. With a few step down rings, I can use this on several lenses, which makes the cost affordable.

Worked Perfectly!!

Excellent results in the right conditions

Produces excellent results, though it reduces the light level a bit more than other similar lenses I have, so best if used with very bright light and heavy UV at higher elevations. I achieved excellent results recently in Colorado above 7000 ft elevation, but at lower elevations with less UV, say 2000 ft, I had to either switch to a different polarizer or else push the ISO setting up to 200 or even 400. So I will hang onto it as a specialty lens for mountain use, but switch to another lens for general use.

It is ok.

This filter works great on the 70-200mm size 77mm 2.8 but the 82mm on a 16-35 2.8 there is distortion and you can see a vertical line while shooting. The line doesn’t seem to show up in the image but it is distracting while photographing.

I have used many CPL's over the years and this one has the feel of quality that is as good or better than any that I have previous owned. The polarizing filter is the one filter that cannot be simulated with post processing software. It is used to darken the sky and to reduce reflections form non-metallic surfaces.
