OK but extra expensive

I bought this 77 mm CPL based upon the manufacturer's adds proclaiming that this CPL had superior light transmission. Compared to my older Pro Master HGX CPL (2461) there is little if any difference. They are nearly twins and make similar quality claims. Camera light meter shows no increase in light transmission into the camera. However, the Pro master is a bit cheaper and you might want to look at it too.

Superb quality

This 77mm filter is superbly made, especially the quality of its 8 anti-reflection coatings. My only disappointment, is that for such an expensive filter, that it did not come with a made-to-measure carrying case like my same sized Hoya HD UV filter did.

Best CPL, period

Exceptional light passing; can even work under overcasting day. Smooth rotation; though it's so "slim" & be careful it might hurt the plastic lens thread :)

Worth the extra $ for the saved F Stops

Granted it's pricey, but as they say you get what you pay for. Although it's very thin to cut down on possible vignetting when stacking filters, it still somehow feels rugged in construction. The polarizing effects are as expected. But overall, it was well worth the extra cash to save the F stops over lesser, darker CPL filters.

Too thin - making it very hard to remove

It's not as dark as most polarizers so is good for slower zoom lenses. It's also very light weight which is good if you want to keep weight to a minimum, however, the frame is VERY thin and is very difficult to grip when removing it and the frame can distort if you squeeze it too hard making it even harder to remove. If you leave it "permanently" attached to a UV filter it's easier to put on/take off (but that negates its light weight). I'd recommend a filter with a beefier frame that's easier to put on and remove unless you really like this glass (which is good) and don't mind dealing with the ultra thin frame.

Great glass!

I use this on my 24-105mm F4L all the time. It cuts through haze and smog like a hot knife through butter. There is minimal light loss, auto focus is unaffected, and I love the brilliant color and glare reduction offered. Head and shoulders above an UV/haze filter.

Hoya 77mm for my new Nikor 18-300mm lens

This is a great addition to my new lens. Creates great looking skies.

Light rays which are reflected by any surface become polarised and polarising filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens.
• They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc.
• They also saturate colors and increase contrast.
•Polarizers come in two variations but have the same effect. Linear polarizers work with older camera meters; Circurlar polarizers are designed for today's newer split-beam metering systems used in auto focus cameras. Check your camera's manual.

Hoya 77 Circular Polarizer Features

  • Creates dramatic sky/cloud contrast.
  • Saturates colors without changing color balance.
  • Mount rotates to control amount of effect.
