Questions & Answers

Shopper : This should work with 11X14 large Format cameras? Looking to try experiments with large format and inferred.  Plus would development of the paper film be the same or different?JERRY H : It should work just fine with the correct film. A little experimenting is going to be necessary with exposure, but that’s the case with all infrared filters.ROBERT S : Paper Film? If you mean sheet film (infrared), yes,it will work. I exposed Rollei Infrared film f/16 at 1/15 sec. For development, you may start with instructions included with the film.MICHAEL V : As long as the lens will except the filter and your using infrared film and you're exposure is correct than it will workGILBERT P : It has been much too long since I worked with large format cameras and film. I'll beg ignorance because I may be giving you the wrong answer. Sorry.WILLIAM B : This filter works with lens with a 77mm diameter. It doesn’t matter what type of camera it is. This filter is at 720nm, which gives you good colors for your shots. But before you buy research IR editing and doing long exposures, because you can only shoot long exposures with this filter and you have to edit your shots to get the best out of your IR shots. So if you’re looking to shoot without having to edit your shots too much, I’d suggest looking into full spectrum cameras where you just attach the filters on and editing is kept at a slight minimum. I can’t really answer your question on development because that depends on how you edit them and if your computer is properly color calibrated.KENNETH S : Sorry cannot answer
Shopper : What is the difference between the Hoya R-72 and the Hoya RM-72?PHILIP H : The R72 passes infrared rays 720nm and above. The Hoya RM90 passes infrared rays 900nm and above. If you've seen R72 and RM72, then you're likely looking at the same filter. The numbers in the names represent the cut-off in the color spectrum (i.e. R72 = blocks all light wavelength below 720nm and RM90 = 900nm)JORGE L : I don’t know for sure, normally the M on filters means multicoated. If that´s the case I haven´t done any comparison between multicoated and nonmulticoated IR720 filters :(, sorry, what I can tell you is that maybe is more important to use an objective (lens) that shows high flare resistance, normally primes, manual focus, simple designs, buy please check on IR blogs and pages for good and non so good lenses for IR, I can strongly suggest Voigtlanders (20, 40, 58, 95) and some Nikons like the 24-85 F2.8-4 or the Nikon manual focus 28mm F2.8, I have read that even the Nikon 18-55mm kit lens works great but I don’t have that lens. By the way, if you don’t have the hotmirror removed from your camera body don’t bother getting the IR720.VINCENT T : R72 passes only infrared rays above 720nm; RM90 passes only that above 900nm.
James W : Will this filter work with Digital cameras like the Nikon D700 & D4?WILLIAM W : I don't know about the specific camera. The general rule is it works better on older cameras. Also, it takes like 30 seconds to get the exposure correct. The newer and more restrictive the camera is the longer it will take to get the shot. You can type your camera and the filter into Flickr to get examples of other peoples shots with the lens/camera combo. The shots come out all red and it still takes alot of photoshop but it is fun filter. Sorry this wasn't exactly the answer you wanted -bJORGE L : Sorry for the delay. My name is not Jorge but never mind I have the answer. This filter can be successfully used with “any” digital camera (DSRL, mirrorless, P&S, etc..) given that the UV/IR filter (hot mirror) on top of the sensor has been removed; i.e. a “modified” camera. The modification has to be done by a competent shop (max max, life pixel, etc) because there is a risk of damaging the camera if a non-skilled person tries to do it. In my case I use a Fuji IS PRO that was built and sold by Fuji with no AA / hot mirror filter and has F-Mount, so it takes, happily, all Nikon lenses :), although not all lenses are good for IR. You can find several lists of “hot spot” and not hot spot” lenses for IR on teh web. I have enjoyed very much IR photography for B&W and faux colors. If you don’t have or do not plan to have a modified body I strongly suggest “not to” get the filter since D700 IR filter is quite strong. I also have a D700 and It does not give good results without the modification. I am so happy with the Fuji IS PRO results that I have order a modification for a D600 and I´ll sell the Fuji in short. Hope this information will help you.ARUL F : The filter works pretty well with my Canon EOS; it should work with other manufacturers as well!

I've always wanted to to try ultraviolet photography, I'm so glad I finally did. The photos are amazing.

This filter is crazy. I'm using it on a fujifilm x100v When set to B&W you get amazing shots. Then I tried it when set to vivid and the shots are out of this world. Buy one you will not regret it.

A Fun Filter for My Iphone

Bought this filter to use on an iphone mount. Its been lots of fun looking at the same scene in a new way. I don't have any other experience with infrared so can't provide any insight into the "quality" of infrared production but they look good to me!

Great fun for simple IR photography.

I previously owned the 52mm R-72 filter and used it on the APS-C Sigma 30mm f1.4 with some success. I purchased the 58mm size so I could use it on a few different Fujifilm APS-C lenses (e.g. XF 23mm F1.4 R LM WR). It has helped me in taking some interesting black and white IR-ish photos and I hope to further experiment with it (while working on my post processing technique). Be prepared to get out a tripod for long exposure times or shoot wide open in the middle of the day.

I'm very happy with this filter. I've been able to get stunning IR photos that look every bit as good as a converted camera.

Hoya Infared above the rest

Hoya performed better than Breakthrough and Haida on my Canon Wide angle lens. Very nice infared filter. Tested all three and happy Hoya worked well with my 15-35 and 24-70 lens.

Fun Fun Fun for under $100.

Have went out 3 times now with this new filter. Love it!! works best in bright sun mid day. Just another toy in my collection. One that lets me enjoy photography when most other types of photography does not work (high noon). You will potentially get a hot spot in the middle that is caused by lens selection and not shooting relatively wide open. However by testing thru a few lenses and F-stops i have it nailed now. Again great toy for under 100$. Watch some youtube videos on processing the photos and how you need to download and use the free Adobe DNG editor to create a profile for your camera.

Fun to play with

Fits well. Fun to play around with IR photography. Still passes a little bit of visible red light-unsure how sharply it tails off at 760mm. With long exposures, can clearly see IR glow of plants.

Recommended Infrared Filter

This is an excellent way to experiment with infrared photography. The only challenge is focusing the image. Due to the fact that my lenses did not have the infrared focus adjustment marks, I had to experiment with a few photos to get the images clear. Just a suggestion, but it is best to shot the images in raw and also to have a custom white balance . It is a fun way to explore this kind of photography! I would certainly recommend this option if you don't want to modify your camera, and this filter tops them all .

Black and white infrared shooter

Love this filter. It might be a bit on the pricey side, but money well spent if you are experienced with black and white infrared photography. Renders beautiful contrast. Solid construction and glass quality is quite good.

Amazing filter, great quality images

Have used this for a few landscape shots and I was blown away by the images it produces. Good quality coating as well, seems like a solid filter. Could be cheaper but I didn't want to skimp out and get a cheap filter that would have adverse effects.

Stunning Effect

By Jacob J.

After viewing some spectacular images on the internet, I purchased the R72 filter simply to play in the infrared spectrum without the high cost of sensor stripping. I mount the filter on top of a rotating circular polarizer and generally shoot between 0.5 sec and 20 sec. tripod-stabilized exposures. Simple Photoshop workflows render stunning results. For an inexpensive introduction to IR photography, this is an amazing bargain.

Nice fit for an olympus E510

By Big J.

I was a little worried about the ability of the E510 to take good infrared photos with the ir cut filter still in place. All of my worries were gone after I saw that first photo, the hoya rm-72 filter is a good match for this camera. I bright sun my exp time is anywhere from 4 to 6 sec. at f8 and an iso of 400. The other thing that I like about this filter, is that if you let your eye adjust for a few seconds you can see well enough to compose your shot though the view finder. Over all this p...

From the renowned brand Hoya, the 77mm R-72 Infrared Filter is a high-quality, durable, and effective tool specifically engineered for infrared photography with digital cameras and infrared film. This versatile filter operates in the high-red area of the visible spectrum, starting at approximately 750nm and extending beyond 1000nm. This range of light, invisible to the human eye, is expertly captured by the R-72 filter, which may appear almost opaque due to its unique ability to only pass light from the very high red edge of the visible spectrum and infrared light.

The Hoya R-72 Infrared Filter is a testament to the transformative power of infrared photography. It allows photographers to capture images that reflect infrared light differently than normal light, leading to creative, sometimes stunning results that offer a fresh perspective on familiar scenes. It's important to note that due to the unique nature of infrared light, filter factor and exposure compensation can vary widely from visible light and are largely dependent on lighting conditions. This easy-to-use filter is an essential tool for photographers looking to explore the intriguing world of infrared photography.

Hoya R-72 Infrared Filter Features

  • Works well with digital cameras, especially mirrorless cameras or DSLRS with no IR blocking filter in front of the sensor. (Please check your camera's owners manual)
  • Only passes light at 720nm (high-red) and above. Gives more predictable results than filter that only pass Infrared light above 850 or 900nm.
  • The Hoya R72 is constructed using high-quality optical glass from Hoya mounted in a precision milled aluminum frame that provides rigidity.
  • Consistent quality, made in Japan
  • Can be paired with colored black and white contrast filters such as the R25 (red), K2 (yellow), O (orange) or other color filters to change the color rendition or contrast effects.
