FAQ

What is the main purpose of the Hoya 82mm ProND 100000 Neutral Density 5.0 Solar 16.6-Stop Filter?

The primary purpose of this filter is to reduce the amount of light entering the camera lens, allowing for long exposure times even in bright conditions. It's ideal for capturing motion blur and smooth water effects without overexposing your photos.

How does the Hoya ProND 100000 maintain a neutral color balance?

The filter uses Hoya's advanced metal vapor deposition process to create an ultra-dark ND effect while maintaining a very neutral color balance. This ensures faithful color reproduction in your long exposure photos.

Can I use the Hoya ProND 100000 filter with any lens size?

The Hoya ProND 100000 filter is available in common filter sizes. If your lens size doesn't match the available filter sizes, you can use an appropriate step-up ring to adapt the filter to your lens.

Is the Hoya ProND 100000 filter suitable for viewing or photographing solar eclipses?

While the filter is designed to control light in photography, it is not suitable for direct solar observation or protection during solar eclipses. Always ensure to use appropriate eye protection when viewing or photographing the sun.

Not just for eclipses

I purchased this as an all around ND filter for extremely long exposures and not just for solar eclipses. It seems to be fairly neutral in color. Build quality is good, just like most Tiffen products. Optical quality seems pretty good as well.

Perfect for pictures of the sun and solar eclipse.

I used this for the April 8th solar eclipse and it worked perfect. Hoya makes great filters as I have several and this did what it was supposed to do. It's great just to take pictures of the sun and observe sunspots on the surface. A great filter.

Just what I needed for solar eclipse

Just what I needed for the solar eclipse. Photos were crisp and clear. Did not get the orange look I was expecting but that's okay. Looking forward to trying for water/clouds long exposures.

More filters in my future

Delivered quite quickly. Purchased with the intent of photographing the eclipse, unfortunately the weather had other plans. I was however able to get test shots few days before, filter preformed better than expected. I'll definitely be adding filters as my photography journey continues.

Hoya Pro ND100000

Excellent forslowing water for satin effect. Just used for eclipse and was extremely happy with the overall results, even with having thin to heavy clouds for most of the eclipse. Looking forward to using Dingmans Falls this summer.

A good sun filter.

This did exactly what I wanted, which is to allow sun photography without adding unwanted internal reflections or flares. My first attempt using it produced excellent results.

Definite Sun Blocker

Well, I mounted it on one of my telephoto lenses, attached lens to camera, pointed it at the sun, and sure enough, you could see the sun's disk. So, it should work perfectly for solar eclipses.

Excellent function and construction

This filter is designed for strong light situations, especially eclipses. It works well, is well designed, and screwed into my Fujifilm lens flawlessly. Highly recommended. Adorama delivery was prompt and efficient.

Perfect

Filter functioned perfectly for me during the eclipse. Bonus, the solar eclipse in 2024 will pass right over my area, so I'm all set for that as well! Fit my 67mm threads just right.

Very happy with this filter

Bought this filter for the 2017 eclipse. I was able to take awesome pictures of the sun including totality. Very high quality and worked well with a lower end 500 mm zoom lens, screwing on and off the lens very smoothly. Worth every penny paid for it. Very glad I bought it and grateful for my pictures!

Perfect solar filter for my needs

I was looking for a simple solution for taking solar eclipse photos using existing equipment. This filter is a quality product that didn't break the bank. I was able to get shots showing the entire sequence that I was proud to show off to my friends. My only reservation came when I read the enclosed warning that the filter should not be used for solar shots without additional filtration. I used as is and experienced no problems whatsoever, with shots at ISO 100, f:8, and shutter speeds 500-1600.

Pretty good value

Performs as advertised but expensive, though good optics are. Really only has one use - solar photography. Worked well for the eclipse. It's not clear from the specs if it blocks UV and IR so best to mask the viewfinder and focus in "live view."

First time solar photographer

I have never attempted solar photography and have had to experiment with my Canon sx 40 HS to get what I want out of the filter. The Hoya filter has performed flawlessly.

Will work for eclipse.

I've experimented taking photos of the sun and it works as advertised. No harm to camera. You can't look through viewfinder so be a aware of that. There are other more expensive choices that allow solar details to be seen but are more expensive.

Hoya PRO ND100000 Solar Filter

The Hoya PRO ND100000 filter is a specially designed for solar photography, both shooting the full sun and solar eclipses. This is a ultra dark filter with a filter factor of 100,000 meaning it only passes 1/100,000 of the light that enters the filter. That translates to a light reduction of just over 16.5 stops. This is necessary due to the sun’s intensity even during a solar eclipse.

The more than 16.5 stops of light reduction can also yield exposure times of several minutes during daytime where the sun is not actually in the photo. Hoya uses a precise metal vapor deposition process to create the ultra-dark ND effect while maintaining a very neutral color balance for faithful color reproduction at very long exposure times.

The PRO ND100000 is available in 58,67,77 and 82mm sizes only. If the size is not available to match a particular lens, purchase the next larger size and use an appropriate step-up ring.

Hoya PRO ND100000 Solar Filter

Features

  • Excellent for photography of the sun and solar eclipses
  • 16 3/5 Stops of light reduction
  • Filter factor of 100,000 / Optical density of 5.0
  • Metal Vapor Deposition process for neutral color balance
  • Good for extremely long exposures in daytime settings

Caution, Please Read:
The Hoya PRO ND100000 is not suitable eye protection for extended view of sun or solar eclipses.

Do not look directly or indirectly into the sun without appropriate eye protection.

The ND100000 should be installed in front of the camera lens or telescope before the trying to align it with the sun.

If possible do not use an optical viewfinder when aligning your camera or telescope with the sun. If the camera has a live view feature, use that to align it with the sun and for viewing.
