Questions & Answers

Shopper : can it be attached to camera tripod?
Richard M : Hi, I have a sony A7r ii and use it with a Sony 24-70 2.8 lens. Now I have a feiyu Tech MG V2, but it isn't working together, because the lens is to heavy. Will it work with the EC1?JOSEPH B : As long as everything weighs less than 5 lbs, you should be fine. Preferably 4 or less.JEREMIE B : I use an A7sIi with heavier prime lens together with the Ec-I. I would add find the weight of the body and the lens and compare it to the max weight limit of the Ec-I specifications.James D : It will work beautifully. Bought mine at Adorama and love it. I have shot video with my Canon 5d mkiii and the 24-70 L on my EC1.... much heavier than you Sony setup. Lots of videos out there of your exact setup in use.Daniel B : The EC1 will handle the weight just fine, but you may have to add a little bit of weight by the camera body to get it to balance. In my experience with the A7Rii and the Canon 24-70, I needed to add a few ounces by the camera to get the EC1's balance adjustments to be in range. I was using a lens adapter which pushes the weight further away from the camera body. You may be just fine.
Shopper : Will this work with Sony a6500?Daniel B : It's simply going to be a question of weight. Just look up the weight of your camera body and lens, and make sure that it fits within the min-max of the EC1. I've used this with a 5dmkiii and several different A7 bodies. To get it to balance with a few of my bigger canon lenses, I needed to add a small amount of weight under the A7 camera bodies.JEREMIE B : Yes. When buying a Gimbal you should always check the maximum weight the device can handle. If the camera weight plus the weight of desired lens add up to less than the max load capacity your golden. I use the EC1 in combination with an A7sII and various lens. The only issue with all Sony SLRs are the EC1 or near any Gimbal will cover the rear mounted Sony LCD display screen due to Sony cameras all having a limited range of articulation on there displays. A Small HD or Atomos record mounted on the bottom of the EC1 solves the issue for me. Even without the additional monitor the issue is not a big deal really.JOSEPH B : Yes, in almost any lens pairing. Just add up the weight and make sure you're under 4 lbs or so. Works great with my 6500 with Sony 18-105 f/4Xavier M : To be very honest I returned mine, you have very little visibility in regards to the monitor on the back of your camera ; just does not make sense; all weight is a big issue. You are better off with a ronin m in my opinion; that is what I use along with an osmo x5GARY O : Yeah it should. You might wanna add a little weight to the camera like a cage or a larger lens, but I use the a6300 on mine almost exclusively.

Great for midsize DSLR

Currently using the Canon 80D with a Rokinon Cine 35mm (56mm equivalent), and it stabilizes fairly well, however with a lens without stabilization itself some of the footage is still shaky in extreme conditions. Without a manual lens, it works much better, especially considering most other gimbals of this price range don't support over ~3.5 pounds.

Great, somewhat-compact solution for moving shots.

The iKan EC1 has been a stable workhorse with reliable stabilization and can handle a decent payload. The gimbal is easy to operate, easy to balance and great to use with DSLR's and mirrorless cameras with hefty lenses. The gimbal itself is extremely durable and feels very solid. With a large payload, I would strongly recommend getting the double grip add-on accessory.

Not the best

The EC1 works well but had a slight tilt and couldn't be leveled. The manufacturer had great customer service and offered to repair or replace it for free. The EC1 should be used for short video recordings as it was tough to hold for long periods of time. Without the two handed optional attachment my arm was smoked by the end of one wedding and I am a fit man.

Fantastic

This really brings out the best features of shooting with a mirrorless camera. The ability to get fantastic professional looking shots on the run is phenomenal.

Wanted to Like It

I could never get it to even fire up out of the box. I had several come at the same time, the EC1 being my primary choice, but after using the Crane, the EC1 went back pronto. In all fairness, I never used it effectively, but in terms of weight, feel, build quality, battery function, etc. the Crane has it beat.

A Learning Curve

While the setup videos make it look super easy, it takes a bit of effort to balance the camera. I was disappointed that, despite having the impression that it would take a 5DMIII with a wide angle lens, I had to quickly give up on that idea and settle on using a 70D with a 10-22mm. Even so, it won't go full range as the lens bumps into the top motor. I have yet to recalculate the settings on the motors, but I know the pan speed needs to be slowed down because using it with a wide angle results in dizzying footage. Honestly, if I had a mirrorless system it would likely be perfect and I've debated on returning it as I opted for this model because it was supposed to handle a larger DSLR. Not saying it won't but there are videos online that suggest changing some of the settings for a larger camera. Another thing is that you really have to practice walking with bent knees to avoid a bob in footage which is generally not that noticeable unless you speed up the footage. I'm using it for real estate video walk thrus and I think once I get all the adjustments made and a bit more practice, it will serve the purpose - and increase my upper body strength because it's pretty heavy fully loaded!

Results in professional quality smooth video

So far so good. Paired with 80D with 18-135. Perfect fit. Wouldn't go much heavier though.

Still getting to know the EC1

I'm still getting the hang of the EC1. As always ikan delivers on strong construction. The frame is solid and easy to balance relatively speaking. As with all tools and specifically with gimbals there is no magic bullet. You still have to be aware of your movements. That said the encoders work as well or better than any high quality gimbals I've used.

Works Good

Coming from using a Ronin-M, we wanted the EC1 because we could use it with our DSLRs in tighter-spaced situations where the Ronin would be most difficult to use. Like any type of gimbal there is a "learning-curve" for you to determine how it is best used for you. It took us about 1-day of shooting and it works great!.

Love the ec1!

This is a fantastic gimbal. The only thing that could be improved is a way to adjust the pitch without having to use software. Also, these units do not get 12 hrs on a set of batteries. The most I have gotten is about 3 hours. However, because the batteries are replaceable, it is easy to put in a fresh set.
