Great Follow Focus - DSLR & Small Video

The ikan EV2 is a light-weight, affordable follow focus kit for small video cameras (Sony NEX VG 900) or DSLRS. The mounting hardware is aluminum and the focus gear is a tough composite material. There is no slop in the gearing and it comes with a lengthy 17" whip attachment. The focus mechanism can be easily moved to either the right or left side. The beveled, white marking disk takes dry erase marker easily and it comes off just as easily. The kit comes with two zip tie gears, camera plate, tripod plate, and riser plate, making it all you need for your rig, except for the camera and tripod!

Not that

It's really sturdy, but enough issues that I returned mine. Side-to-side adjustment means you'll bump into the rail clamps unless you adjust the height way up. Baseplate's huge, you won't be changing batteries unless you disassemble the top plate and remove you camera. Yep, can't get the mounting screw out of the camera when it's assembled. You could use a QR and tighten the daylights out of it, but that gave me too-high issues. Variety of metric & SAE hex sizes means you'll need both multi tools handy. I tried assembling this in different ways, but it's just not though out that well. It is much stronger than much of the competition.

Sturdy but not well thought-out

Man, I wanted to like this (my loupe plate offsets the camera tripod hole 15mm to the side, seemed like a great answer). It's sturdy - the rail sleeves are nice & long so you don't get the fore & aft tilt a cheap setup gives you. But... Adjust it sideways and it hits the rail clamps. Unless you raise it. The side-to-side screws are metric, the up-down are SAE.. that's just nuts, I don't have a single SAE screw on any of my camera gear. So you need a set of SAE allens in your bag now. The camera mount screw isn't captive, and it is TOTALLY inaccessible... you have to dismantle the unit to mount a camera and to tighten it through a shoot (and DSLRs are notorious for loosening and spinning on their screw). You could add a quick release and really bolt it on tight, but along with having to raise the unit to side-adjust, it's way too top heavy now and too high for many follow focus units. The big platform blocks your battery door, so a quick battery swap now means removing 4 bolts, taking the top plate off and screwing the camera off. Getting it back together is a pain, as the top plate has to be held in alignment while you insert 4 small bolts. Hope your set isn't hectic or dark! This thing may be the bomb for some setups - it's tough and solid. But make sure you buy from a returns-friendly place like Adorama... I found it pretty infuriating.
