Stan D : Are these files made from stainless steel? If you know, how can you be certain? I need to know for certain if these are made from stainless steel or hardened tool steel. A first-hand source other than simply relying on the manufacturer's literature is preferred.Richard T : I'm really not sure they do not appear to be stainless steel though. Hope this helps.

Be prepared to wait.Tom E : Edges are rounded like the strings, so yes you could widen the slots. The sides of the file are smooth.Tom C : No. The files do not have grit on the side. The grit is on top and bottom edges only.Mark P : No, only on the edges to cut the depth. Bearing to the side won’t widen the slot. Made from inferior Stainless Steel, NOT made from tool steel
Called before buying this set and was assured these were made from "hardened tool steel" and not from inferior stainless steel. My concern all along was receiving stainless steel tools. They came and are indeed stainless steel, so they won't last a fraction of what a tool steel set will last. The Ibanez nut files are made by Hiroshima, the company who makes the historically excellent Uo-Chikyu brand. Now all Hiroshima nut files from 0.009" - 0.067" are made from stainless steel, likely in an effort to cut costs. The quick way to tell is the magnet test. A magnet will not attract to most stainless steel, including these Ibanez files and the stainless Uo-Chikyu files. All Hiroshima files larger than 0.067" are still made from tool steel, but who knows how long that will last?

Barely long enough to use
I have several sets of high quality nut slot files. But I still needed a few more sizes. I ordered these. They appear to be sharp enough when slotting a bone nut. But, they’re half the length of all my other files. Where sometimes one stroke is enough these required 2. However, at half price what more could you expect except half files

Nut files are for maintaining the nut on your guitar. Filing the nut makes it smoother, which will help stabilize tuning.
