When I first received the mandolin I was a little disappointed. It sounded a little flat and played a little stiff. Once I removed the styrofoam strip under the bridge, lowered the string height and set the bridge in the proper location (all very simple steps. Google will show you how) this instrument came to life. It is not ready to play out of the box but it was simple to set up and didn't require any tools to do so.
