Review Summary

I use the my 50d to shoot at political events - the photos are used for news releases, campaign material and as archives for various candidates. I have never had a problem - the autofocus is quick - even indoors in dim lighting - at times, I shoot available light indoors and these shots were always good - needing very little manipulation in DPP, Photoshop CS2 or IPhoto. The 50d is light enough that I can use it for hours without getting tired - the 17-85mm lens does a really good job. Many of the photographers that shoot at these events use 5d Mark ii with 28-135 lens, battery pack and 580 EXII flash - and by the end of the day they look like their arms are ready to fall off. I have been contemplating going the lighter route - with a Rebel Ti3 but I like the weather resistance of the 50 because here on Guam you never know when the rain is going to fall and the humidity and salt air may also affect the lighter cameras - I still carry my Rebel XTI with an 18-200 Tamron just in case but have never had to use it in almost a year. I would not hesitate purchasing my next camera from Adorama - the 50 came 6 days after I ordered - and that's crossing CONUS and across 10,000 miles of the Pacific - as soon as I took the camera out of the box - I started shooting with perfect results.

Bought camera based on reviews and a friend's recommendation..the macro lens is a beauty. Camera controls are quite intuitive but take your time and learn all the camera can do for best results.

I like Canon and I very satisfied with this camera. I'm recomending to professionals and enthusiasts photographers. No doubt. It's the best investment in this series.

Canon's EOS 50D bridges the gap between the novice and the seasoned pro with a perfect combination of high-speed and quality. It features an APS-C sized 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor for tremendous images, new DIGIC 4 Image Processor for fine detail and superior color reproduction and improved ISO capabilities up to 12800 for uncompromised shooting even in the dimmest situations.
It features a refined 3.0-inch Clear View LCD (920,000 dots) monitor, supercharged Live View Function with Face Detection Live mode, plus a number of new automatic Image Correction settings and HDMI output for viewing images on an HDTV. The standard zoom lens features a wide focal length range from normal to telephoto equivalent to 29-320mm in the 35mm format.
It features an Optical Image Stabilizer for up to 4-stops of effective correction even at full zoom. Since Canon's optical image stabilization system is in the lens, not in the camera, you can see the stabilized, steadier images through the viewfinder. And the circular aperture can give beautiful background blur effects. This new wide zoom ratio EF-S lens delivers excellent high-speed performance at an affordable price.
