Questions & Answers

GIUSEPPE B : Is the 60d a suitable for regular photography or is best to limit its use to AP?COUNSELING & C : John B., The 6D a is a good balance for an all around camera. I wish I had the a part on my 6D. Enjoy your camera.SUNGHUN C : It's primary use is for astrophotography but it functions well for regular photography too. The red are are a bit more vibrant but this is really only noticeable if you are actively seeking it out, comparing it shot to shot with another camera. Honestly I cannot really tell a difference when taking pictures with just the camera. If you are a purist, IR filters and custom white balance can turn it into a normal daytime camera.Barry B : Assuming your question is about the EOS 60Da, not the 60D, yes, it is suitable for regular phiotography. I have not found the reddening some other reviewers have spoken about. Regular pictures are great.ANDREW B : Works great for "regular" photography. I have no experience with Astrophotography.TOM V : I don't know anything about AP but I do use the 60d professionally for photography and video. Love it. RICHARD H : I owned a 20DA previously and used it for both regular and astrophotography. With the 60DA I am still doing both. Depending on the lighting, there is a slight red cast to some of the regular pictures I take but I honestly have not done enough regular photography to be sure if it is just an adjustment with the camera I need to make (i.e. operator errror) or something that will always be there. It seems to happen with some flash pictures where there is a mixture of light on the subject (CFL, incadescent). This has occurred mainlly indoors. When I know the white balance function better, I think it can be eliminated. The range of adjustments is quite large. I just need to play with enough of them to be sure. Outside it is fine. Hope this helps.PHILLIP W : The 60Da works fine for regular photography. I've used mine far more for that than for AP. There are some reviews on line which agree.Marc S : Though I have not used the 60Da for anything but astrophotography, I understand that it does quite well for everyday photography.
Shopper : What would be a good all around lense fro this camera? Would the 18-135 be good or the 18-200? Which would be better? BillLLOYD B : Personally I would use the 18-200 for a general all-purpose lens. You will also need an OWB (Original White Balance) filter to use the camera for terrestrial use to correct for the enhanced IR sensitivity. Astronmik makes an OWB II filter for the Canon to restore the color balance to the chip.PERRY H : Hey Bill, I've been doing AP for about 5 years now, obtaining my 60Da from Adorama recently. I had been using a modified 60D also purchased from them. You'll truly enjoy using the live view feature and the articulating LCD screen on your 60Da. Good purchase!!!! For doing astrophotography with the 60Da I recommend three Canon zoom lens, which are in my stable. They are listed in increasing order of use: EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 EF 24-70mm f/2.8L EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II Those are not cheap because they are good quality lenses. With lenses, you generally receive what you pay for. These are great lenses for AP, especially the latter one. If you wanted to purchase just one zoom lens at first, I'd recommend it. If you wish a single prime lens to start with, my choice is the Canon EF 200mm F/2.8 L, a wonderful piece of glass that carries a good reputation among APers. The zooms with a largest-to-smallest FL ratio of over 3, or thereabout, usually do not have sufficient optical quality for doing AP. They are OK for terrestrial use but not suitable for AP, usually. Therefore, I would not recommend either of the two zoom lenses you mentioned. Then you could think about adding teleconverters to your stable. I especially like the latest 1.4X and 2X TCs by Sigma for the EOS. I consider them the best bang for the buck. Here's one other idea in closing. You can find good condition used lenses. Many of those are good values, so, check 'em out.JEAN N : I took a Tamron 18-200 on a two month trip to Vietnam and Australia, and was quite pleased with the results. COUNSELING & C : Afternoon; the 18 to 135 is a good landscape lens. If you have the money I would by the 24-105 L Canon lense. If not then i would go to the Tamrom 18-270 Macro, landscape and some goo distance shot in 1 lense. I have the 18--200 want to go up to the 18-270, 70-200 2.8 and a 200-500mm, as a speciality lense i have the canon 100mm L Marcro, I primatily use the 18-200 and the 70-200 gotmy pro work. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions youcan contact me 907888-0852.
Shopper : This is a 60da, not a 60d, so this has the IR filter removed (or is different) for astrophotography. Does anyone know if there is a mode on the camera so that you can use it for normal daylight photography, of do you have to buy the IR blocking filters for all your lenses?LLOYD B : Yes, you need an OWB (Original White Balance) filter to use the 60Da for terrestrial use to compenstae for the enhanced IR sensitivity of the chip.TERRY D : I have only used the 60da for astrophotography. The instruction manual states: "Shooting normal subjects with this camera is not recommended."CARLOS V : My camera has just been shipped to me this week so I can't say with absolute certainty but on my Canon Rebel that I had modified and on most research says you can set a custom white balance for any other shooting conditions. If you shoot in RAW the meta data allows you to shoot with custom white balance and remove it later with the canon utilities. With the wide variety of editing software you can also do this.JOHN F : I purchased the Canon EOS 60D not the 60DA. I am not the person to ask about the 60DA. However, I do recommend that the shopper call Canon (1-800OKCanon) and talk to their technical staff. They have always been very helpful to me. Sorry I can't be of more help, but you might as well go right to the horses mouth with your question and ask the Canon Techs. Good Luck! John F.

Great camera

It is my third Astro-camera. Wish they made this in 2009, it would have saved me from buting two other cameras. Love the design... very low noise images... the swivel LCD is a Back-Neck saver.

Great bundle at an awesome price

This was a great deal, some extra goodies at a lower price then the body by itself. I upgrded from a Repel XSI and I have to say the experience at Adorama was excellent, the people I dealt with in the resale dept (Jacob) and the Customer service people were all extremely professional and prompt. They gave me a good price for my XSI and applied it to my new purchase it was all very simple.

60D Very Satisfying

Years ago I owned and used several film SLR cameras, I just bought the Canon 60D and am very impressed with it overall. It is fairly easy to use, has more features than any photographer could possibly need and takes excellent, clear and well focused photos. As an old SLR user I'm having a bit of a time adjusting to the auto focus, but it's fast and quite accurate. I also bought a Canon 28-135 USM and a 75-300 Canon lens with the camera and so far have absolutely NO regrets. Adorama provided great prices[...]. Thanks you guys!

From the Manufacturer

Canon EOS 60DA
The first astrophotography-specialized DSLR since the 2004-vintage Canon EOS 20Da, the 60Da shares most of the features of the 60D, but with one key differences that will put a smile on any stargazer's face.

The Canon EOS 60Da features increased IR sensitivity for astrophotography (IR cut filter is modified to achieve a hydrogen-alpha (Ha) light (656nm) transparency approximately three times higher than the EOS 60D and other digital cameras) allowing crisp, clear images of reddish, diffuse nebulae. To capture the full range of colors given off by diffuse nebulae in the sky, the EOS 60Da features a specially tailored infrared blocking filter that allows the light normally blocked by a typical DSLR's filter to be captured by the camera's sensor. This means that the reddish hydrogen-alpha (Ha) light (656nm) gasses unseen by a normal DSLR are captured brightly and clearly on the EOS 60Da. With its modified infrared blocking filter, the EOS 60Da captures approximately 3x the hydrogen-alpha (Ha) rays than the EOS 60D, resulting in astrophotography that is sharper, clearer and more accurate.

Along with the the Canon EOS 60Da a Remote Controller Adapter RA-E3, which allows compatibility with the optional Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3 for accurate control of long exposures and automatic shooting of repetitive shots with the interval timer is being bundled with the camera.

In all other ways, the camera shares the same features as the original 60D, including an 18MP CMOS sensor (a significant upgrade from the 20Da's 8MP sensor), with an ISO range of 100-6400 up to 12800, custom functions, a 3-inch flip-out LCD with 1,040,000 dot resolution and compatibility with the entire range of Canon EF and EF-S lenses. .

EOS Performance, Brilliant Results
18.0 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor
The EOS 60Da features an 18.0 Megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor that captures such a highlevel of resolution it's easy to crop images for enlargement without concern of losing detail. A major factor in reducing noise, the CMOS sensor assures that images shot at highest sensitivity will be remarkably smooth even with the long exposures associated with astrophotography.

ISO 100-6400; expandable to ISO 12800 in H mode
With a broad range of ISO settings, expandable up to ISO 12800 with Custom Functions, the EOS 60Da can capture fine details with lownoise, which is exceptionally ideal for the challenging conditions of astrophotography.

DIGIC 4 Image Processor
The DIGIC 4 Image Processor - the same found on the original EOS 60D - ensures that images are captured, processed and saved with remarkable speed. The EOS 60Da offers multiple aspect ratio shooting, in-camera RAW image processing, creative filters, image resizing and provides S2 and S3 image-recording quality thanks to the power of the DIGIC 4 Image Processor. With dazzling results, the DIGIC 4 Image Processor also works to capture and process data of images shot at 18.0 Megapixels at 5.3 fps, as well as 14-bit signal processing for excellent image gradation, no matter the exposure.

Bright and Easy Viewing at Any Angle
Vari-angle 3.0-inch Clear View LCD and Live View.
The EOS 60Da features a bright, high resolution, flip-out Vari-angle 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor for shooting at a variety of angles. Convenient in all situations, the monitor's flexibility lends itself to tripod-mounted shooting towards the sky, offering a comfortable alternative to through-the-lens composition.

With 1,040,000 dots for spectacular detail, the advanced, smudge-resistant monitor includes high transparency materials plus anti-reflective and water-repellant coatings to provide clear and bright viewing. Superb for reviewing, editing and deleting photos or composing new images in Live View function, the Vari-angle Clear View LCD monitor is also the perfect means for accessing camera settings like ISO, metering modes, AF Point selection, and the horizontal Electronic Level.

EOS Control in the Palm of Your Hand
Remote Controller Adapter RA-E3.
The EOS 60Da comes bundled with the new Remote Controller Adapter RA-E3 for total compatibility with Canon's remote switch for EOS cameras with the N3-type socket, the Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3. This remote switch has a self-timer, interval timer, long exposure timer and exposure-count setting feature. The timer can be set from 1 second to 99 hours. A dial enables numerous settings to be accessed one-handed. It has an illuminated LCD panel and a 2.6ft/80cm cord. Perfect for nighttime setups, and for shooting at the sky, the Timer Remote Controller TC-80N3 is the perfect complement to the EOS 60Da's power.

An Extensive Family of Lenses and Accessories
EF and EF-S Lenses.
The EOS 60Da is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF and EF-S lineup, ranging from ultra-wide angle to super telephoto lenses.Canon lenses employ advanced optical expertise and micron-precision engineering to deliver unprecedented performance in all facets of the photographic process. Special optical technologies, such as aspherical, ultra-low dispersion, or fluorite elements are featured in the universally acclaimed L-series lenses. And Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology is featured in select lenses to minimize the effect of camera shake. Additionally, the lenses used for astrophotography are compatible with every other EOS SLR; Canon wide-angle, macro, super-telephoto, tilt-shift and fisheye lenses provide a wealth of focal lengths, depth-of-field and other creative shooting options.

EOS Accessories.
Canon offers a host of accessories to help photographers make the most of the EOS 60Da's powerful features. For long exposures usingLive View, the AC Adapter Kit ACK-E6 provides a constant source of AC power to the camera. For composing through the viewfinder, Angle Finder C enables an adjustable viewing angle while providing a 2.5x magnification for critical focusing with a full screen image that also shows exposure data. Battery Grip BG-E9 enables the use of AA batteries or two LP-E6 batteries and adds the convenience of access to all the cameras features in both portrait and landscape orientation.
