Times when carrying all your gear is just not necessary for a momento shot, this pocket wonder does the trick. Provides ease of use, compactness and stowability for times when you want a festive shot or two while not having to worry about your gear bag full of expensive equipment.

Have not use it much since I have only two weeks with it, but for what I have done so far it is a very good buy.

It's rather small, uses two AA batteries, has a fairly sharp 6x optical zoom, and the large screen is rather good to look at. The IS is a big help. The face detection works well, and the focus confirmation replay is helpful. The (flower) macro mode, though no focus point is selectable, is far better than it has any right to be. It's really great. Now, it has a number of shortcomings, which given the price point, I suppose I might expect. However, some of them could be "improved" via Canon programming the camera differently. 1. There's no manual exposure(M) mode of any kind. Zero. You cannot select combinations of shutter speed and aperture, nor can you set the focus. And sometimes, it simply picks the wrong point. I would still prefer to have access to an (M) mode, when the situation warrants. 2. The lag is fairly long compared to more powerful models - compact or SLRs 3. The flash recharge is farcically bad; it takes up to four seconds (even with new batteries). But what's worse is that the camera essentially turns off while it's recharging after a shot. So for up to four seconds after a flash photo, the LCD turns off, you cannot compose nor get ready for the next shot, while a small indicator lamp blinks to show it's recharging. I would prefer the camera allow you to continue framing via the LCD screen, and even shoot partial power flash or non at all, in case you really need to snap again. 4. Needless to say, high ISOs are cruddy. 5. When you go to erase a photo, "CANCEL" should be the default highlighted button...in case you're moving too fast. Instead, it's "ERASE" and if you move quickly by rote memory, you can erase keepers by mistake. Be mindful, two short keypad strokes can nuke a photo. 6. The movies it produces are unreasonably large. I don't know if the encoding is simple motion JPG or whatnot, but the file sizes are gargantuan, even though it's only 640x480 size video at 30 frames per second. Some optimization would help but I don't know if the in-camera processing could do so. Anyway, it's better have have the video feature than not.
