One of my most cherished items.

I have had this camera for 11 years now and it is still taking great pictures. I am buying some updated equipment soon that will have a wider variety of settings (increased ISO range, video capabilities, etc., but I still plan on using this camera because of how reliable it is. The Canon Rebel line is awesome for beginners (which I was when I first got this one) and professionals (I used this through college for my art degree) alike.

Doesn't work after it gets older

I have had this camera for about 3 years. It worked fine at first, now it takes one picture and then quits. I have missed several great shots because of this. I have tried troubleshooting the problem but no one seems to know what is wrong with it.

Great EOS to start with

I've had mine for over 12 mos. Its great to learn how to do SLR photography, but ditch the package lens and upgrade to a "L" lens. Its the lens which make the photo's not the camera. I plan on holding on to this camera and continue to "learn" how to use the features. The more expensive "bodies" are just 'nice to have' items. More pixles are great - but who is going to enlarge photo's beyond 8" x 10" or 8" x 12"? The "Dummies" book for this camera is better than guessing what to do. Because this camera is an older model, the book is @ Amazon & cheap. If you're just starting out with this being your 1st DSL, I'd highly recommend it. Practice with it until the sensor dies (several years later, then you can upgrade, but by then you'll know exactly what you'll want your 'next' camera to do.

So far so good

We have been using our new camera for the last week since our new baby was born. We have gotten some great pictures of our little guy. They look to be great quality on the LCD screen. We haven't uploaded them or printed them out yet, but we are happy with our purchase.

Great camera for the money

I recently used the camera for shooting wedding photos in a low light area. Photos turned out great. The battery life is great! I get almost 500 shots per battery charge. The price is very good for the quality of the camera. I would recommend it to any amatuer photographer.

Great for beginner!

I will state I am a beginner, with that said this camera has been beyond my expectations and can't wait to see the quality improvements when I really get into using the features! Most things I shoot are with the programmed features..but watch out I am learning.

What a way to start!

I bought this kit to enter into the world of digital SLR's. Since my purchase 9 months ago, this camera has seen well over 12,000 images pass through it! It has been a wonderful camera to learn on, and I honestly don't feel any need to upgrade, although I've begun to work with a local studio for weddings and events! It produces amazing images when you learn how to use it's features. I've since gotten an external flash, but the light scoop did wonders for indoor shots...With the two batteries, there is plenty of room on the 4gb card for over 1000 images, and this holds everything in the kit, plus regular batteries, plus two other lenses! There are three filters included, and the Circular Polarizer does wonders on sunny days with white clouds and blue skies...Knock on wood, but I have not had one single issue with the camera or kit since I got it, and I shoot now nearly every day...(I got the three year warranty just in case so I'm not at all worried about it!)I could not be happier, and for anyone who is going to start learning how to make good photographs, this in an incredible kit at a great price. Being a bigger guy, I'd recommend buying a battery grip for it as the camera alone is small enough to be a little hard to hold on to, but other than that, you just can't go wrong. I've seen some guys lugging around much bigger, more expensive rigs, and there have been lots of times in comparison that their images didn't come close to what I've been able to do with this, so before you think it's ALL in the size/price, think again...This little Rebel XS packs everything you need to produce professional quality work if you take the time to get to know it...I've since added a 75-300mm (NON IS) lens and the "nifty-fifty" 50mm (plastic built) lens for working beyond the 18-55mm kit lens. With my ball-head, pistol-grip tripod, a remote shutter release, and an external flash, I am ready for just about any situation I've come across and have gotten great many great critiques for the images I've produced with this camera. This may be considered a beginner's set-up, but it doesn't have to be!

Great Entry Level Camera

Since I got into photography, my brother has been eyeing my photographic equipment with intrigue. Now that his birthday has just passed, he is now the proud owner of a Canon Rebel XS. Here follows a review of his camera. One of the things that really impressed me was how comfortable the camera was. With Nikon, the lower end DSLRs (like the D3000) felt like a brick or a G11 with a lens mount, but the Canon Rebel XS feels very comfortable, especially for an entry-level DSLR. One of the highlights of this camera is its liveview mode. For those of you not familiar with this term, it's simply reproducing the camera image on the LCD display, something many older DSLRs cannot do. What's more is that the image on Liveview changes as he changes the camera settings manually. When he'd lower the shutter speed, the image got brighter. When he'd change the aperture, the image changes correspondingly. This gives the beginner an immense advantage in learning how to conquer the exposure triangle (shutter speed, aperture, ISO) on manual settings. The kit lens the camera came with also surprised me. The older kit lens (18-55mm 3.5-5.6, non-IS) was garbage, producing soft images consistently. The new lens, however, has a nice metal body and is much sharper than the previous kit lens. This, along with a 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens, would make a great combination for beginners. For an entry-level DSLR, I am beyond impressed with it.

Perfect entry level upgrade

I upgraded from a basic Canon point-and-shoot - and am really impressed with the new results. The pictures are sharp and the camera provides me much more flexibility in how I take the shot. I've done some close-up floral photography and the results were stunning. Bought a supplemental book to go along with the manual and spending some time learning the technology of the camera. Quite a bit to get used to but easily learned. Great camera for the casual photographer to the more technical enthusiast!

Finally a nice camera!

I researched DSLR's for a while and finally decided to buy this one based on lots of other great reviews. I've been taking pictures for a long time, with very basic point and shoot cameras. Since this arrived, I've taken literally thousands of shots, from close-ups to night, and lots in between. I'm learning the manual settings, and finding this camera to be great to learn on - the images are vastly superior to anything I could capture before, and the camera itself is pretty easy to figure out. It is fast, lightweight, and takes amazing pictures - what more can anyone want?

SWEET Camera!

I take pictures for the yearbook at my high school, but I was looking for something better than the point and shoots the school had. Since I am thinking about entering photojournalism as a profession in the future I figured I should probably get some entry-level stuff so I can get used to the lingo and dealing with DSLRs...and to get higher quality images for portfolios for college and scholarships. Speaking as a first-time DSLR user, I was able to begin taking pictures right out of the box. Granted I highly doubt I know all the features. This is a great camera to have before stepping up to pro-level cameras which are much more confusing. Yes, it is noisy but that's the way SLRs are. Yes, it is expensive, but its the cheapest SLR on the market...making it great for beginners like me. I wish it would perform to higher ISO levels...it stops at 1600. I also wish it would take more than 3 pictures per second...but then again, this is a cheap, entry-level camera so 8 frames a second picture-taking like we see with the Marks shouldn't be expected. Image quality is good...once again, don't expect the quality the pros from Getty and AP have because 1) they have top-of-the-line lenses and 2) they buy the nice, Mark cameras. But, for my case, a yearbook/school paper, and a casual user this will suffice. If you work for a large paper or publication, bump up and get something a little more expensive. Also, the built-in flash it pretty good. I used it for basketball this season, since I didn't have my hot-shoe flash yet, and it worked pretty good with the kit lens. 2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

good camera

nice camrera for begginners. decent autofocus and good image quality. even though my canon sx2ois got 12mp, the image quality was much better in the xs. decent iso at 1600. yet the reason i havnt give it a 5 star was because of the poor built quality{very simular as a powershot.}. And you have to fiddle around the menu to reach some functions like live view af. Yet over all good camera for starters.

Simplicity of use

I used this camera just days after getting it for my vacation. I got some really fabulous seascape. I was amazed at the kit lens and it's ability to bring distance shots close up as evidenced when using the zoom button on the resultant shot, and viewing it on the LCD screen

Wonderful product!

This is a great camera! You really get a lot for your money! I do suggest getting the telephoto lens...I love it! I find myself using it more than the "normal" lens! It was hard for me to decide between the Rebel or the Nikon D60, but I am happy with my decision. The Rebel exceeded my expectations!
