Henry W : If I shoot with a manual full-frame 24mm lens with the M adapter, do I set hyperfocal lens selection to 24mm or do I First multiply by 1.6 and choose 38mm? I'm doing video and want to make sure my focus is right on my manual focus lens. Please help. How does the hyperlocal app know if it is an "M" lens or a full-frame. Hyperfocal pro app doesn't allow you to designate...Joseph S. V : Sorry, cannot help on your question
Henry W : Will I get in-body IS and IS from an "L" lens resulting in double IS if I use the "L" adapter with Canon IS Ultra Sonic lenses on this M5? Any thoughts video shooters?DAVID L : No. There is no in-body IS on the M5. You would get IS from the lens only.ANDREW R : Canon is not clear about IS with adapted lenses, though EF-M lenses with IS would work in conjunction with the in-body IS whilst shooting video. Per Canon: "For more stabilization, when a combination IS-compatible lens is attached, the EOS M5 can use the lens’s Optical IS in conjunction with Digital IS for even less chance of blur due to shaking."
Shopper : manual focus during video recording?

Big practical design changes from the EOS M3

I came from owning an EOS M3 camera which broke due to the shutter button and power buttons wearing out completely. I can see that the M5 changes the button to a more durable switch. Also with a switch you are less likely to compulsively turn the camera on and off which would lead to less wear. The shutter reaction time is noticeably quicker than the M3 and the chrominance in low light is much less pronounced than the M3. This is important because I typically shoot in dense forest which is always quite dark.

Really Nice Camera

I have had an M3 for couple of years and have bought most of the M series lenses. The M3 is a bit short on dynamic range, but I love the lenses. The M5 is a nice step up. The raw files are much more flexible the ones from the M3 and detail is just as good. I think I am going to like this camera.

Perfect Camera

Easy setup, has all the features I need and wanted to help my portrait photography journey. Good battery, lightweight, flawless touchscreen. Only issue is, you can’t put a camera strap on until you add split rings.

Getting Closer

I've owned Canon cameras since my first F-1 in 1973, so I'm a loyalist. I bought an M50 because of the better specs vs. the M5 but returned it within 24 hours because it fell far short in actual usage so I then bought a refirb M5 to replace the M5 I gave to my daughter. I hope the M 7 or 8 or 9 is closer to my ideal mirrorless camera. As a travel camera, the M5 fits most of my needs. That's why I'm keeping my T2i and 7D MK2. For most people, the M5 would suffice. Buying direct through the Canon website was very easy.

Great camera

I have a 6D Mark 2 also. Both cameras have their place. The 6D is good for low light, but the M5 is a great travel camera. Where I would have to carry a backpack for my 6D, the M5 with the equivalent compliment of lenses fits in a small and light shoulder bag. I had the first M and the M3 but this is a much better camera. Quick focusing, focus peaking, and some great lenses. The true test is picture quality and this camera system excels. I have a 2 foot but 3 foot enlargement that’s super clear. Lens built quality is great also.

Works like a champ

I have had this camera and the 15-45mm lens for three weeks and love this camera. It does everything well. The focusing is quick and accurate at all distances. All my old SLR lenses are usable via the M to EF adapter. The EVF is a lifesaver allowing me to operate the camera without my reading glasses.

Awesome Canon Mirrorless Camera is only getting better.

I have had the every iteration EOS M family. This new M5 is the most complete product in the systems history. The DPAF is incredibly fast and accurate. There is a tremendous amount control from the dials. The ability to manipulate your AF point on the touchscreen while using the EVF is incredibly intuitive. The 7-9 fps burst is faster that my 5D3. This is an incredible travel camera and a legitimate second body if you also shoot with a DSLR. Lightweight, compact and intuitive to use. The native lens line up is lacking, but you have access to the full range of Canon EF and EFS lenses which is incredible.

Nice Little Camera

I had the original EOS M and this is a huge step up, it focuses much quicker and has excellent image quality. I kept my 18-55 lens. I also have a Tamron 18-200 lens, but beware that lens will not work on this camera. All in all this is a good camera to carry around instead of a larger DSLR.

Everything about this camera is top notch, fit & finish, it is everything you will need as a backup camera and a general shooter. Ease of use, easy to understand menus. Touch screen. Sony better be worried.

Not an Enthusiast Camera

Back dial has no lock function or disable mode in custom settings. The dial is not very tight and it frequently moves while walking around. This makes the Creative modes of M, Av, Tv, worthless on this camera. It is being sent back to Adorama

About Canon M5

PRO REVIEW by David Wallace, Street, Landscape, and Portrait Photographer

"If you are starting out or a professional photographer, filmmaker this camera is well worth the money. I use it on a daily basis and get a lot of use out of the functions. For example, the headphone port is great for added audio! It also films in 4K so you can get extra cinematic. It is lightweight and small in size, and the fact that you can use the lens you use for your shooting camera is amazing, so if you have incredible glass already this can be easily transferred over!"
