I bought this printer a few years ago for school because I needed to print a lot of research material, and an inkjet wasn't cutting it. I researched and found this printer. Granted, I have never used the wireless feature, and just tried to set it up and it doesn't work. It connected, but not printing anything from my phone that is hooked up to the wifi. So, who knows. Regardless of that, I now work from home and use this printer for work. I can tell you hands down that I am really happy with the speed of printing. The scanner works, but don't try to put more than 6 pages in the feeder. It will eventually grab too many pages and jam. I usually help the feeder by holding the pages until the "break" and then release it. The scans are just fine otherwise. I don't use any of the fax features or anything else about it for that matter, so I can't say for certain what to expect.

Scan function always has trouble connecting. Constantly looses connection, very unreliable. Save your money and buy another printer

I bought this printer after years of being stupid and paying for inkjet. I've had it for nearly 3 years and just as happy with it now as the day I got it out of the box. Double sided scanning, printing and copying are the best!

Horrible. Wireless printing is iffy, scanning fails randomly. Scan to PC is broken beyond belief. Windows drivers suck. No Linux support. Has yet to jam though. I work in I.T, avoid this like the plague.

This printer is not set up to work with Mac. Constantly is disconnecting from the WiFi. Always prints two sided. Not user friendly whatsoever.

Long time canon customer. Absolute value for money. I use the printer with wireless mode with Static Ip address (router setting. It has been a workhorse. It has been working for last 2.5 years with ton of printing done. More than 5 toner boxes changed.

Bought this to do lots of B&W copies for years to come at about 2 cents a page.. Sure that's about what it works out to if you buy the generic print cartridges on Amazon... but the printer has a very hard time printing. It doesn't want to connect or install on computers easy. It really only works when connected via USB. Forget trying to scan with it.. it's going to take you 2 hours, every time. It doesn't remember settings or register computers on the network. this thing has turned out to be a costly paperweight now... It's only printing half of the pages because of a driver issue. This printer seems to be unsupported as well so good luck updating it. Waste of money. It has really put a bad taste in my mouth for cannon products. But this same issue is what happened to my previous printer from Epson. So I guess they're basically a government product and made to fail. No follow through, no support.. packaged well, but in the end worthless.

This printer will seem to work at first but you will find yourself wanting to take it and beat with a baseball bat because it eventually will not connect to your computer. Do yourself a favor and get a different printer.

Plain and simple the most reliable printer I've ever owned. Stays on my wireless network. Doesn't give me any hassles. Prints immediately from multiple computers. Fast fast fast. Love it.

I purchased this printer from a local big box retailer in February, 2014. I carefully chose a box that had not been opened or drop kicked during shipping. This specific Canon printer was recommended by a friend as a reliable B&W Printer. However, since the time of purchase, I have had to constantly re-program my wireless connection (as in every few days. This is totally unacceptable, frustrating and to be honest, this printer is going to wind up the same place my last color ink jet printer ended up….the local landfill.

We bought this machine a couple of years ago to replace a functional inkjet office machine - I was tired of messing with printer ink cartridges. My wife uses it to print receipts and makes copies and I use it to scan photographs. We have no complaints on it's operation. Print and scan qualities are good and meet our needs.

I have used this printer/scanner for 1 year. I use the wireless connection. Printing works OK. The scanner almost never works. It creates a useless error message then does nothing.

My last printer was a Canon inkjet which still runs fine after 6 years. But it gradually dawned on me that a laser would have lower operating costs, and other advantages. I wanted another Canon, and was able to get this one at a killer price. It prints much faster than my old printer. The print quality is much better -- really crisp and excellent. And the toner costs are much less. I can also print to it wirelessly from my iPad and iPhone. Had it about two months and I couldn't be happier.

4-in-1 desktop laser unit top rated in 2015 CR Buying Guide.....New printer in sealed box came without any literature, software, or warranty paperwork. That said waiting on Big Box chain supplier to either replace this obviously used printer or supply needed info. That said...downloaded drivers from Canon website, unzipped, and launched drivers. Hint 1: Canon could be more user friendly and clearly label the file that is the executable rather than the user having to guess. Hint 2: for computer to recognize the printer after powering up printer, needed to unplug the USB cable and then reconnect the USB cable again.

I purchased the ImageClass MF4890dw a couple years ago. I had been happy to find a copier/scanner/printer to resolve my home office needs. I had several problems: my wireless password is long, and the Cannon kept forgetting it as I didn't leave it on 24/7. Re-entering the wireless password was painful, and annoying. Frequently even when entered correctly I had to fuss with my network to get the printer to be seen. Then the fuser went - which was surprising as I hadn't printed more than 1000 pages (if that). Apparently the fuser cannot be easily replaced. So I can't print or copy - but I also cannot scan as this takes the entire device down. I feel like this was money thrown away. I am not impressed with this device, and will expedite its trip to the (ecologically) appropriate junk pile. I make my living testing software, imaging, and medical devices, although this device was purchased for my personal use. Not impressed with this imageClass mf4890dw.

- Great price for dual sided printing - Print quality is not acceptable even with other toner types - Menu features are weak - Have owned for a year but have to give it away and get something with decent print quality

Pros: * Compact size * Multifunction feature set (on paper, anyway) * Reasonable cost * Easy on-screen setup Cons: * Inscrutable instructions * clumsy Mac software * horrible Linux drivers (although I had a terrific customer service interaction out of that) * lack of scan to USB I would not buy this printer again, and I'd seriously scrutinize other Canon offerings. The lack of workable, stable Linux drivers is a particular shortcoming.

The device simply doesn't work as a scanner. OK as a printer or copier but the wireless scanning setup is a pain and when it doesn't work the error message is simply "Error". Don't waste your money on this.

Good multi-use machine but incomprehensible manuals. Not intuitive to use- need manuals initially and manuals are incomplete. E.g. no indexing, and it shouldn't take 4 separate sets of documentation to explain all the features. Just give me one comprehensive PDF with everything in it!

When the printer actually prints, it works flawlessly. The problem I have is that it constantly comes off line. As in ALL THE TIME. This printer is never ready to print for me. It is the only wireless device in my household (and I count no fewer than six such devices) that I have problems with. The controls are nonsensical and it might be the least-intuitive electronic device I have ever worked with.

I have not used this faxing, but routinely print and scan with this printer over wireless home network. Works great. Scan function can be slightly tricky but not hard to learn. Setup and user guide doc that comes with printer are top notch. Just moved this printer to a new secure wireless network and had it up and running in 2 minutes. Rock solid machine.

This is an excellent laser printer that is easy to setup and use right away. I was impressed by the print quality and the number of functions provided. If using Apple PC, read thoroughly for all setup.

Great Printer, and great value for the price. I have a previous model that I bought 4 years ago and its still going. I bought this one because I thought the old one was broken from me dropping it when it actually is fine, so now I have both of them up and running!

Print quality is high and fast. The network setup wasn't too painful. I run this on a home network with two pcs and a mac and they all can network print without issues. Scan to computer function over the network is a little clumky, it works but it's sometimes can't find computers to scan to. When plugged into USB, scan to works very well. Duplexing ADF is slow, but works well otherwise and was a major selling point.

I have an old Canon copier that I've used heavily for probably over 20 years and its been wonderful. I also have an old Brother laser printer which is starting to have a couple of problems. I had thought about getting another Canon so when I saw this Canon multifuction printer I ordered it. So far, I've been very pleased. I do not use the fax feature, but I've gotten one wireless computer working on it, and have used the copy feature also. I'm going to try to get another laptop to talk to it next. I can't say how long it will last, but if it only lasts half as long as my copier (which still works) I will have no complaints. Cons. Small complaints. Instrutions for setting up the wireless and using the copy function. There are several options for the copying and the definitions could be explained a little better. Certainly not a show stopper though.

First of all, this is an excellent printer for a SOHO. It has fast print speed, wire(less) networking, ADF, and duplexing. It is extremely capable and gets the job done. This printer has some quirks that is leading to some of the negative reviews posted here. Some of the tasks, especially scanning aren't intuitive and not immediately obvious. I dropped a star because of this. I am using a Mac with Mavericks, but have also installed this printer on Windows 7 as well. I have used this printer for about 15 months. To address some of the negative reviews: . R: scanner is not working for Macintosh A: Absolutely false. Scanner works perfectly in Macintosh. However, it's not intuitive how to scan documents. You have to set the scanner into scan mode, then select remote scanner. This puts the printer into scan receive mode. Then the MF Toolbox scanner app will see the scanner. Otherwise, the app will complain. Why can't the developers just put in something to have the scanner available ALL the time like all the other multifunctions out there. This makes no sense and complicates matters. . R: Noisy Printer A: This printer isn't any noisier than most of the other multifunctions I've used. Obviously, it's going to be louder than an inkjet, but this is what you get for high speed laser. . R: The fax machine has to scan one page at a time. You cannot just put the sheets in an automatic document feeder. A: This is false. I've faxed and scanned multiple pages (1-sided AND 2-sided) from the ADF just fine. . R: Copying always does 2 sided and it is not easy to do a single page when desired A: Again, this is false. I've been able to do 1 sided -> 2 sided, 2 sided -> 1 sided, 2 sided -> 2 sided. Read the manual. The setting is the 3rd one down on the control panel. Hit Copy, high down arrow twice, hit ok. All the permutations are there. To change the default settings, go to Menu -> Copy Settings -> Change Defaults -> 2-Sided . R: MF Drivers Will not install A: This is user error. You probably DON'T have admin privileges. If you do, you probably need to right-click on the installer and select "Run as Administrator" R: weak software, This product install is difficult and time consuming. A: Weak review. Driver install can't be any more straightforward on the windows side. I don't know why they split up all the drivers into separate installs on the Mac side, but it isn't any harder than installing drivers for any other peripheral. . The REAL cons: 1. The scanning interface is unintuitive. You have to set the printer to scan mode before being able to scan. This step shouldn't be needed. 2. Scanner DPI limited by software to 300dpi as another reviewer had mentioned. Can it do 600dpi optical? I haven't figured out how. But then again, do I need 600dpi for a business machine? I don't think so. 3. Computer faxing CAN'T be done through the network. If I can print via network, why can't I fax over the network? This is an arbitrary limitation and I think the developers should remove it. Right now, I have a USB cable hooked up to the machine just so that I can print to the fax driver. 4. Eats toner. The starter cartridge is rated for 1500 pages, but I got low toner at 700. I mainly print word docs. But then again, ink/toner is where the money is.

Excellent Small Office Printer
By WVLawyer
I am a solo practicing attorney and have recently hung my shingle part time. This printer suits my needs perfectly - I don't need high volume, but I do need a reliable printer/fax/copier scanner. It was cost effective and works great. I've been using it consistently for 3-4 months and haven't had a single issue.
The Canon imageCLASS MF4890DW Monochrome Multifunction Laser Printer prints at up to 26 ppm simplex and 16 ppm duplex. The MF4890dw features a 250-sheet input tray. The multipurpose bypass tray allows you to print on another medium without having to take the standard paper out of the printer. The unit's automatic duplex printing lets you cut your paper consumption by up to 50% by printing on both sides of the page.
The 600x600 dpi color scanner is capable of capturing letter-size documents from the scan glass or legal documents from the ADF. The 50-sheet ADF lets you scan, copy and fax multipage documents in 1 easy step. The 5-line LCD and easy-to-use menus provide options such as reduction and enlargement, 2-on-1 and 4-on-1 & ID card copy. Easily scan color documents to your computer to reduce paper clutter and create a paperless office. In addition to scanning to a computer, the MF4890dw can scan to a network folder. When you scan a document, you can use the bundled OCR software to convert the scanned document into editable text.
In addition to a standard USB connection, the printer features wired and wireless Ethernet connectivity, so the printer can be shared over a network. Save resources and conserve space by sharing 1 printer with an entire workgroup. Thanks to the MF4890dw's security features, your data remains secure even as you send it to and from your computer.
The MF4890dw's embedded fax modem lets you send and receive faxes as well as send faxes from a connected PC. Use the ADF to fax multipage documents in 1 easy step. The MF4890dw can store up to 256 pages in its internal memory so that even if it runs out of paper, the machine can still receive faxes. The machine also features 4 1-touch speed dial locations, 100 coded dials, as well as group dialing and fax broadcasting. The MF4890dw also lets you automatically forward incoming faxes to any other fax number.
