Camera worked just fine -- proprietary batteries were terrible. I upgraded from a SX150, which used 2 AA batteries. Using rechargeable batteries gave me long life, very inexpensive power. The SX170 uses Canon proprietary battery. I bought a backup battery for big bucks. I then went to a sporting event -- and a got less than 90 minutes from each battery. After 3 hours of use, my camera was dead. Stick to model SX160 or one that uses AA batteries. These terrible (low life, high cost batteries have rendered my camera almost useless. I scrapped my SX170 and went back and bought a SX160.
