Questions & Answers

Shopper : Does it have a viewfinder?HARRY G : Canon and the rest of the camera industry has found it in their wisdom to do away with an optical viewfinder that you physically look through. This means that on a sunny day your LCD viewfinder will be worthless . I am shopping for another point and shoot which leaves me with a limited selection. I really do not know where this total lack of knowledge of outdoor photography but let these so called designers/engineers go try and get a beach shot or a shot of a bird feeding..I have to purchase a bridge camera or a very expensive point and shoot. Buy a Bridge camera you will have the zoom...The 520 does not have one and the only cameras that canon makes beside an SLR with a viewfinder is SX50...SX60...G16...GXI Mark 2....go with the SX50...its a Little older but a darn good camera...those two the 520 and the 50 shouldn`t be far away in price....
Shopper : Is there a difference in lenses from this and the bundle?ANDREW R : Not sure I understand your question. The PowerShot SX520 has a permanently attached zoom lens.
Betty R : Is this camera senior friendly....meaning with the hand controls etc?

Fantastic!

I absolutely love this camera! I got this camera at least 5 years ago, and the photos I've been taking on auto have just been fantastic! I am not well versed on cameras, but this camera is so simple to use! People are always asking me, what kind of camera do you have! I am becoming known locally for my great photos, but knowing what makes a good photo is only half of it. Because I am so busy with my artwork and regular job, I don't have time to learn to use my other, newer dsl camera, but no need to since the zoom on this is so good! Maybe someday I'll learn to take if off auto, but no hurry. Auto

lot of features

This is my first experience buying refurbished from Canon. I was worried I would get a used looking lemon that no one else wanted. However, it exceeded my expectations. I can't see any difference from this refurbished and a brand new camera. I am extremely happy with how it looks and operates. For the money you can't go wrong.

Wonderful Camera!

I'm my school's yearbook photographer and I've loved nature/landscape photography since I was nine. I was devastated when I dropped my SX170 in a river last spring, so the day after I broke my old camera, I bought this one since I couldn't stand a day without a camera. I was so desperate that I barely looked into the functions of this camera before purchasing it, but I wasn't disappointed. When taking anything from portraits to action sports shots for yearbook, this camera meets all my expectations. It captures sharp, clear images without a problem. When capturing landscapes, the colors are rich and the contrast is lovely. The only issue is that I wish there was a wider aperture range, but normally that's not a huge problem. If you've used Canon cameras before, the interface is easy to get used to, and if you're a first time user it shouldn't be too complex. Overall, this camera meets all my needs and I use it everyday. I love it!

very disappointed

I am not happy at all with my PowerShot SX520 HS. The lack of speed of the shutter is ridiculous. I have never had a problem with a Canon product before. Also trying to get it focused isn't going well either...really wish I had saved my money and bought a different camera.

Close to perfect

I purchased this camera to replace my previous Canon P&S, which died when I dropped it down a set of icy steps. It was a Canon PowerShot SX40HS and I loved it. After repeatedly trying to find another, unsuccessfully, I went and purchased the PowerShot SX520HS. It has a wide range of features including taking HD videos and the zoom power is fantastic in both video and still shots. It's comfortable in my hand, even after a long day. For the sake of being completely honest, I do have ONE complaint; the viewing screen on the back is the only way to look at what I'm shooting. I really prefer an eyepiece, because in sunny weather, the glare can be a problem. Otherwise, I really like it.

My Best Camera Yet

The PowerShot is my third digital camera and I could not be happier. The range of the optical zoom is incredible! The autofocus reacts quickly and precisely, the photos save blazing fast, which is not surprising as one of the features is taking a burst of photos. It's very easy to use, for novices and adepts alike. One thing I especially like and was, in fact, one of the features I was looking for is that it feels like a camera in my hands. It also has the ability to take night photos, though I have not experimented with that yet. I've been a photographer for nearly forty years, but I've never found another camera so intuitive as this one, nor of such high quality for such a low price. Whether you're a beginner or not, this is an EXCELLENT camera! Use it once and you'll never look back.

Love this camera

I got this camera to take pictures on my walks. The zoom is terrific (42 optical zoom). The pictures are crystal clear even when zoomed in. Light enough to carry and tripod not needed. Powershot SX520 HS. Would highly recomment.

I have not used this camera since I bought it as a birthday gift for my daughter. I read all the reviews first before purchasing so I believe this camera model will be sufficient for her.

Well worth the money!

This camera is excellent!!!! I got this because it was a smaller camera when we go away. The zoom is wonderful! The details that this camera captures is the best I have ever seen on a smaller camera! I would def. buy this again or give as a gift! You will not be disappointed.

Great quality, value, and ease of use

Our Powershot S x 520 HS is easy to use, takes good quality pictures and is a very good value. The built in zoom and relatively small size make it very handy to carry in my wife's purse while out and about. The 42x zoom brings us very close to the action, without disturbing birds, wildlife or other subjects. Overall, would highly recommend this camera to anyone not wanting to spend a fortune, but also wanting good quality photos with ease of use.

SX520 Camera

I purchased this camera for ease of use, for "zoom in" capability and for picture quality. I use it weekly on walks to take pictures of nature, birds and animals. My other small Canon camera took great pictures but had limited zooming capability, So far, I am extremely pleased with the new camera. I was able to zoom in closely on sunbathing alligators and birds that were far away in a marsh area. My only complaint is that when I use the full zoom capability, I have difficulty holding the camera steady and focusing on my target. My husband (who takes wonderful photos with his Canon and many lenses gave me some tips on how to hold the camera and lens, which I plan to try next time I'm out. Overall, I am excited to learn to use all of the features this camera has to offer!

Canon is the best!

I purchased the SX520 HS for my wife. I did a lot of research before I made my decision. I am a Canon fan from way back, I have two AE-1 35mm cameras and several lenses, never had any issues with them. Then in 2012 I purchased a SX 40 with Image stabilizer, awesome camera. I wanted something similar for my wife, something that wasn't as complicated yet made great point and shoot pictures. The camera came with a great kit, best part is 3 batteries and a charger, she should never run out, a 64g card holds lots of pictures, a case, a mini tri-pod, lenses protectors, hdmi cable, etc. The camera is awesome... my wife is very happy, so I am very happy! We have 4 granddaughters and a great grandson on the way. She will be taking lots of pictures and videos over the coming months and years! I would recommend this camera to anyone who is looking for a lot of bang for the buck! The SX520HS is easy to use, fits easily in the palm of a small hand, command buttons aren't in a spot so they can get accidently pressed, just well designed!

Another Good Canon!

I bought the Power Shot SX520 HS to replace an older Power Shot. I debated between another brand and the Canon for several days. I went with the Canon because it felt more comfortable in my hands. I have small hands and the SX520 didn't feel too heavy or too bulky. It is considerably larger than the old Power Shot I have, but not that much heavier. It's larger mostly because the lens doesn't fully retract into the camera body like my old one. I wasn't too wild about having to take the lens cap on and off, but so far, it hasn't been too much of a bother. I've taken pictures at the beach, at night, early morning and the pictures have all come out so much sharper than my old Canon. Most of the dials and features are similar to my old one, but I'm still playing with some of the new features. This is an easy camera to learn to use. The biggest negative for me is that there isn't a viewfinder. When it's sunny, the LCD screen turns into a mirror and all I see is my reflection...not what I'm trying to take a picture of. It's very frustrating and I end up hoping for the best when I'm taking a picture. If the Canon Power Shot had a viewfinder, it would perfect and I would've given it 5 stars.

SX520 HS

Learned photography on a 35mm SLR some time ago. Got this camera to have something better than a point and shoot. All in all it's an ok camera. Would like it if it had an optic sight like an SLR for hand held stability. My face tends to be the third leg of my human tripod. Another good thing would be a manual focus for quicker and finer focus. Well. That's my review.

Canon, the only camera for me!

I was able to operate my camera with a reasonable amount of research. I am taking pictures and movies like a pro. I didn't have to purchase an additional charger! I didn't have to charge it for a day, only an hour! I am bad with cameras; * leave them behind...a great case include *run down battery @ big events...charge fast anywhere *lighting, and zoom, we don't all have to jump around for distance and light People say "I just use my cell phone", Then they see my pictures. The best camera I ever had before this was my CANON ELF and would still depend on it if I could develops 35 MM film. In a word "CANON"

A good arrow to have in the quiver

I must say that I am a Canon fan and own a Rebel and 6D along with some 'L' lenses. So you might wonder, why I bought this "bridge camera." I bought the SX520 to serve as a third camera that I can use for travel and everyday pictures when I don't carry my DSLRs due to space or safety constraints. To get the reach of this camera (1008 mm) on even an APS-C camera, I will need a super expensive 'L' lens (> 600 mm EF lens.) However, winking at the image quality a bit (chromatic aberration, dynamic range, etc.,) I can use the long focal length reasonably well under good lighting. Pixel peepers should look elsewhere. Another reason for purchase is the focal length range. No doubt 1008 mm is impressive but so is 24 mm at the wide angle end. Essentially, there is no downtime trying to change lenses. I noticed a strange focusing constraint that buyers should be aware of. Initially, I thought this was a firmware problem, but upon closer inspection, this seems to be an optical or focus actuator constraint. The shortest focusing distance starts off at 0 cm at wide angle. But as the focal length increases the shortest focusing distance also increases until it peaks at 2m near the middle of the zoom range. Beyond this the shortest focusing distance drops again and reaches 1.3m at 1008 mm. Setting Macro mode does not change the shortest focusing distance but only reduces the search range at the far end. Manual focus is also limited to the same constraints. So, in essence, don't expect this camera to give you extreme macros. If I correctly guess that this is an optical constraint, then a firmware update is not going to fix this. So if this is a problem for buyers, don't expect Canon to fix this later. But that said, I don't think this is a serious constraint. Even 'L' lenses at that focal lengths don't focus that close. I have only played with this in low light so far and these are just first impressions. Expect an update to this review in about a week and another in about a month. 4 stars because I'd like Canon to come out with a similar super zoom (> 40x) on a 1/1.7 inch sensor rather than a 1/2.3 inch sensor. Also, Canon could have gone for a lower pixel count (8 or 12 MP) and higher quality pixel (lower noise, higher dynamic range, etc.) but I guess marketing pressures precluded that. After all, most buyers directly equate camera quality with megapixel count. Overall: I am keeping this Camera for the convenience in decent light and the fact that I don't have to baby it.

This camera was born to zoom, with features and systems designed to make high-magnification shooting with advanced Canon optics simple and spectacular. And High Speed AF means reduced lag time.

42x Optical Zoom and 24mm Wide-Angle Lens
There's a whole new world to see when you step up to PowerShot SX520 HS. Experience breathtaking quality and unlimited versatility with the camera's 42x Optical Zoom (24-1008mm) and 24mm Wide-Angle lens. Say goodbye to the frustration of shooting with a camera that keeps you stuck in one place. Advanced Canon optics bring depth and resonance to shots at any zoom length, giving you the freedom to go beyond the ordinary to create images and preserve memories any way you want.
16.0 Megapixel Image Sensor
The PowerShot SX400 IS camera's 16.0 Megapixel CCD sensor delivers impressive photos with fine detail and brilliant color. The high resolution ensures superb image quality even when cropping or making very large prints.

DIGIC 4+ Image Processor
The Canon DIGIC 4+ Image Processor powers the PowerShot SX400 IS camera's advanced functions and capabilities. Its accelerated processing speed creates fast, responsive performance, for a shooting experience that's easy and natural. The DIGIC 4+ Image Processor also enhances image quality: processing of high ISO shots has been shortened by approximately 60% compared to the DIGIC 4 Image Processor. This significantly reduces noise for brilliant color, smooth gradations and beautiful detail even in low light.

Canon HS SYSTEM helps provide excellent low-light performance
The compact PowerShot SX520 HS gives you the power to capture beautifully detailed, naturally lit images even in low light - reducing the need for flash and the occasionally unwelcome effects it produces. That's because the camera's 16.0 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor works with the camera's DIGIC 4+ Image Processor to create the Canon HS SYSTEM, specifically engineered for spectacular low-light performance. With the Canon HS SYSTEM.

Capture stunning 1080p Full HD video with a dedicated movie button, plus zoom while shooting
Simply touch the dedicated movie button on the PowerShot SX520 HS to start recording video in 1080p Full HD that is breathtakingly vivid and realistic. You're free to use the full range of the zoom in movie mode to get the video you want. You can also view and share your video on an HDTV to enjoy. Intelligent IS
The latest advance in Canon Optical Image Stabilization technology, Intelligent IS, analyzes camera movement and applies the best shake correction method for the shooting situation. For stills, the system selects from Normal IS, Panning IS, Macro (Hybrid) IS and Tripod modes. When shooting video, the system selects from Dynamic IS, Powered IS, Macro (Hybrid) IS and Active Tripod IS modes.
Normal IS
Corrects for a wide range of camera movement when shooting stills.
Panning IS
Panning motion is detected so that IS does not interfere with desired camera movement
Macro (Hybrid) IS
Corrects for shift-type camera shake, which typically occurs in macro (close-up) shooting.
Tripod
When tripod use is detected, the Image Stabilizer is stopped because it is not needed.
Dynamic IS
Effective for video shooting at wide-angle focal lengths, eliminating the unwanted shaking that typically occurs while walking.
Powered IS
Compensates for hand movement when shooting video at the telephoto end of the zoom range, where camera shake is magnified.
Macro (Hybrid) IS
Corrects for motion blur that is likely to occur when shooting video while walking. Also compensates for the shift-type camera shake common in macro shooting.
Active Tripod IS
When shooting video while using a tripod, the image stabilization is active to compensate for slight camera shake.

Zoom Framing Assist with seek function and enhanced automatic zoom
With its 42x Optical Zoom lens, the PowerShot SX520 HS camera has the telephoto reach to capture subjects a long distance away. At maximum telephoto, however, it can be challenging to track a moving subject. The Zoom Framing Assist seek function makes it much easier to use the camera's powerful zoom lens. When you press and hold the Zoom Framing Assist button, the camera will automatically zoom out to include a wider angle of view, enabling you to more easily locate your moving subject. Once you find it, releasing the button will cause the lens to return to its original zoom position, intelligently keeping the subject in focus until you're ready to shoot and capture the perfect close-up moment. When the button is released, the lens will return to the adjusted zoom position. And with the Zoom Framing Assist Lock, the camera will lock onto and automatically track a subject, intelligently keeping them in the center of the frame until you're ready to capture the perfect close-up shot.

High Speed AF
The PowerShot SX400 IS camera is equipped with Canon's latest advancements in autofocus (AF) technology. Working on multiple fronts, Canon has developed AF that is significantly faster than on previous models, for a shooting experience that's spontaneous and natural. The extremely responsive High Speed AF lets you capture great shots as they happen, with reduced lag time. Several engineering breakthroughs contributed to this major enhancement to speed. In addition to improved AF algorithms, the camera can process multiple sequences simultaneously and takes advantage of reworked controls between AF and the start of shooting.

Creative Shot mode uses composition, color and lighting from your original image to create unique images with an artistic flair
The Creative Shot mode featured on the PowerShot SX520 HS can help anyone create images with artistic flair. Rather than randomly applying filters, Creative Shot mode takes advantage of advanced Canon technologies to analyze the individual scene, subject and exposure to apply any of 46 filter options. In addition to the original shot, the camera automatically produces and saves five additional variations of the composition. Filter choices are grouped into Retro, Monochrome, Special and Natural categories to make exploring the world of artistic photography fun and easy or simply select Auto to access the full range of effects. With Creative Shot mode, the result is stunning artistic photos that are perfect for sharing.

Secure Enhanced Grip
Canon developed an innovative new grip for the PowerShot SX400 IS, optimized specifically for the camera's powerful zooming capability. The invitingly curved grip fits effortlessly into your hand. Without any strain, your fingers comfortably and naturally reach the shutter, minimizing the potential for shake at long zoom lengths.

Convenient Front Dial
The PowerShot SX520 HS shares a feature with higher end cameras: a convenient front dial. The dial's placement puts important adjustments easily within your reach without releasing your hold on the secure grip, further stabilizing shooting at the camera's long zoom lengths.

Shooting Modes
PowerShot cameras offer shooting modes that make it easy to take impressive photos in a wide range of shooting situations by providing intelligent presets with optimized settings.
