Questions & Answers

Gail J : Hi. Does this scanner work with ancient 110 film?Gary Z : Not sure but don;t expect much in the way of quality. 100 film cameras were notorious for using poor lenses and even snapshot enlargements suffered from high grain and blurrynessGlen H : Plustek OpticFilm 7600i Ai Film Scanner includes one holder for mounted 35mm slides and one holder for 35mm film strips (6 frames) no other film holders are included.
Shopper : is only for 35 mm film and slides?THEODORE R : That is correct Ted RossmanROBERT A : yesSTEPHEN G : It could be. I've wondered the same thing. It would probably be a question of whether the carriage or holder device could be modified to hold a different size image and still fit through the slot for the image holder. You may have already tried this, but perhaps you can try just putting the image into the slot and see the quality of the scan resulting. For instance, you may have some old negatives of 120 or 620 size you want to try -- large format negatives might not work. It might be simpler and cheaper to keep using the Plustek Scanner for the 35mm images only and using a flatbed or other kind of scanner for the non-35mm size. I assume you're transferring all the images to an external backup hard drive for storage, since an image takes so much memory. I've had good success for the Plustek scanner, with only one problem: images taken with a wide angle lens sometimes don't scan very well and you have to do some manipulation to try to correct the problem. An example might be an image taken from the back of a sail boat to the front (bow) of the sail boat. I do recommend storing the images on an external hard drive or similar external storage deviceLARRY N : Do you mean.. is it only for 35mm film and slides? answer: yes so far I think it does a good quality scan for the price range.DAVID K : Yes, this scanner is ONLY for 35 mm film and slides!!JOHN B : Yes it is only for 35 mm film and 35 mm slides.KENNETH J : It is only for 35mm slides and film.RICHARD S : Yes.DANIEL P : I only purchased this scanner for 35 mm film and slides, so I'm not sure. The tray that comes with seems to only be for this use and the opening for scanning would limit the size of any other media.FRANCIS F : YESDAVID M : Yes. 35mm only.TERRY L : YesCALVIN G : Yes. I wasn't too pleased though. I have bee sending my film out to get scanned.DALE I : Yes, it scans 35mm only. If you have 2 1/4 or larger you might want to look at a flatbed scanner. I have an Epson V700 that does a good job. DaleMARK L : Yes only 35 and slides, not MFJOSEPH H : Yes.ANDREW T : I've only used the Plustek for 35 mm film and slides. The opening for the film and slide carriers is 2.5". The slide carriers are hinged with one piece fitting inside the other. The piece that fits inside the 2.5" piece is 2" wide. If there is a format that is 2" x ??, then Plustek may have another carrier available.RICHARD B : Yes. The film holders are for either 4 mounted 35mm slides or 6 frame 35mm film strips.
Shopper : Will this scanner work with Windows 7 ?ROBERT A : I am using the scanner with Windows 7 64bit and everything is working just fine.DAVID K : This scanner definitely works with Windows 7. The computer that I have it installed on is running Windows 7.DAVID M : I'm using a mac and not familiar with Windows.TERRY L : I am running my scanner on a Mac system, so I am not sure about Windows 7. However I found Plustec's customer service astoundingly good(when I bought mine it did not have complete documentation for Mac) they walked me thru the installation and even called back to make sure everything was OK. I' m sure they can smooth out any problems with 7. TerryMARK L : Yes it works with window 7 like a charm.KENNETH J : YesFRANCIS F : Yes it does support windows 7. Its a great scanner.

not for Kodachomes

Spot on for E6 but useless for Kodachromes, which is what I bought it for. Silverfast images are solarized catastrophes, the native driver with quickscan push putton isnt too bad but shows infamous Kodachrome blue shift. Best option is to buy VueScan which minimizes your PS tweaking.

Does wonders on 60+ year old slides

This is a great unit. I am using it to scan in 60+ year old Kodachrome slides. The color replication and iSRD are superb. With many of the slides it's hard to believe they are 60+ years old when you see the final image. What really made it apparent to me was when I compared this to an HP flatbed scanner with a slide attachement. Night and day; this blew the HP out of the water. Worth every penny. The only flaw is the slide holder is quite flimsy. Do yourself a favor; if you have a lot of slides order an additional slide holder set. That way you can prep the one while the other is in use. Makes things that much quicker.

just ok

hold out and buy a Nikon scanner. i migrated from the Nikon Coolscan 4000ED and i miss it already. this unit is very much dependant on Silverfast even if you use other scan engines. namely i tried Viewscan. the front buttons need to find Silverfast tho drivers are installed. this makes their other software they bundled unusable. i like the carrier heavy design great, except one thing: the cover hinges from the end. nikon carriers hing on the side. so if you have curled negatives it makes for lot easier film strip placemet. obviously Plustek designers have never used film or been in a darkroom. i was going to buy a Plustek Bookscanner but now i do not think so.

PlusTek OpticFilm 7600i film scanner out

The built in infrared sensor in the 7600i film scanner, coupled with SilverFast software version 8 is a powerful combination that removes more film scratches in one click that I could have rectified in hours with either a scanner sans infrared or older software (both infrared hardware and Silverfast 8 are needed to maximize this capability). Note: not yet compatible with OS 10.7 (Lion)

Decent scanner for an excellent price

Silverfast - the full version with target slide is bundled with this scanner - is worth more than the price of this scanner, so is a great value. Very powerful scanning software with a large learning curve. The scanner is modestly slow for simple scans; but if you use the more powerful features of the software - multiple pass scanning, iSRD to remove scratches (no Digital ICE in this scanner), Adaptive Color Optimization, GANE to reduce noise - then scan can stretch up to 20 minutes per slide. The results at best, are good but very soft. I would have bought a Nikon slide scanner instead, but the company is now fully out of the film business, so those of us with slides have to choose from a small number of lessor choices, like this scanner. But if you have a lot of slides to scan, you might want to consider using a commercial service to do it instead - this scanner will take you a very long time to work through them; better for scanning slides when needed.

great scanner for price

Within 1/2 hr, I was able to set up the scanner and obtain scans from slides on a Mac OSX Snow Leopard Machine. I find the supplied software (Silverfast) to be potentially of value but to have some learning curve. Like another reviewer, I opted to download and buy VueScan and have been very satisfied with the scans for slides (ektachromes and kodachromes) color negatives and B&W. I will still send the best slides to a scanning service (I use Pixmonix), as well as the more difficult ones (shadow detail).

Simple and quick to set up

The setup and installation on a Mac is quick and easy. I got the scanner out of the box and had my first slide finished within 15 minutes. The scratch and dust auto correction works about how I thought it would - a little clumsily - but it does get you started and cleans up most of the problems on the first run. You will want to do final edit in photoshop though. The carrier trays feel substantial and the whole unit seems well built. Next time they could save the carrier bag - I'd rather not have received it - and the foam packaging has to go - let's be a little greener wherever we can.
