Not reliable / use at your own risk.

Had a couple of these we purchased back in 2022 and are now beginning to fail (No longer being detected either on Windows or Mac OS). Company CEO advised IT team to not purchase these drives again for Research Associates to use.

Customers shouldn't pay to fix your mistake

My experience is a breach of trust in the WD brand. I'm a macOS user working with large files for photography and videography. I bought the 4TB Extreme PRO V2 because I enjoyed using the 2TB Extreme V2. I figured the faster R/W speed and storage space would mean an even better user experience. Right? Wrong. After only six months of storing over 2TB of data, my system no longer recognized the disk. The only actions my system allowed me to take were to either Eject, Initialize or Ignore the disk. None of these were optimal. Yet the hurdles to hunting for a solution frustrated me even more. That's when I learned about the firmware issue from WD's response to another reviewer's comments. The device impact checker confirmed my disk "may have been impacted." Discovering that my only options were to use a PC to download and install the firmware update or contact customer support infuriated me. WD must not value its macOS customers for it not to offer an easy way for us to update the firmware. We are Mac users for a reason. Instead of having it done the easy way, I get a complicated set of instructions to download and install a third-party program called RescuePRO Deluxe. Now here's where I got super angry with this experience. Customer support told me that though the program might be able to preview in evaluation mode, I would need to pay for it to back them up to my local hard disk. In other words, the customer MUST PAY for WD's negligence to address this issue before they shipped these drives. On top of that, I learned that if this program failed to retrieve my files, my last line of defense was to pay for third-party hardware data recovery. I think WD should pay for this, not the customer they failed. At the very least, WD should replace my bricked SSD with a working one and include shipping costs. I ran RescuePRO Deluxe overnight and returned to find that it could not produce a preview of any recoverable files. Not one byte of my more than 2TB of data was retrievable. Incredible. I cannot recover my files and am too cash-strapped to pay for hardware data recovery. I can't believe I spent $400 for a bricked SSD. This event prompted me to write this review to steer others clear of this debacle and look elsewhere for portable storage solutions.

Product support

It was a disappointment to have this failed only after a year of use and a struggle to get a replacement!!!!!

Excellent but could be better

I really love how small, light, and large in storage it is. SSD is much better than old hard drives. I wish the USB cable is mildly longer and more flexible since I may use my laptop while lying in bed so it may end up dangling and not resting on a table.I bought it on a sale making price great.

Horrible 4Tb drive - lost data + money + time

I wish I had read the reviews below before ordering the product. Bought a 4Tb version brand new. Started using it with my Macbook Pro and copied the contents of 2 of my existing HDD-s [which were 1Tb each] on the new disk along with some other data from my Macbook. The drive saw heavy usage for the first 3 days - and at that time nothing bad happened. Disconnected it after that. Needed something from the driver after about 3 weeks and tried to use it. Asked to unlock - and after unlocking the data was all gone. All that is present on the drive is the unlocker, that is all. Lost all my data with absolutely no warning. Checked my drive's serial number using the link provided by SanDisk in other reviews and was told that my drive is not impacted so I need not update the firmware. Quite possible this product is impacted by multiple issues leading to data loss. Worst part is that reading the reviews below and talking to Best Buy, it seems I am stuck and after losing my data, I cannot even get my money back by returning the product.

Spoiled by the speed

Considering the (now) available firmware update, presumably to address widespread dire complaints about this drive, I decided to risk it and I am not disappointed. Certainly the luxury of transfer speeds in the seconds versus yes of seconds is one you can live without but if you try it once, you'll appreciate it.

4 TB of reliability

It's pricey, I'd like to see a price reduction, though I did get 10% off. Thanks! Western Digital holds the reputation for reliability. I wish shipping were faster.

2 TB in Your Purse or Pocket

Smaller and thinner than my phone. I used to lug my drives around in a satchel. Now everything is on a Solid State drive that fits in my smaller purse or even a pocket.

SSD failed and got corrupted when it was sitting in a case on my desk for two months... It's just not acceptable for that price... Bought through amazon, and they did not help me return the drive...

Not reliable!

Since buying this hard drive I have had nothing but issues with files being corrupted and deleted. As a photographer I needed something easy to bring around while I'm traveling doing photo shoots and this hard drive has made things very stressful. Lost hundreds of files and now I'm not even sure I will get them back.

What a screw job.

I have three San Disk Extreme SSDs, and have had no issues. But this time, I purchased an Extreme Pro, and after 10 days of use, the drive showed up on my Mac as Untitled, and the 5,000 photos I had on the drive from recent shoots are all gone. And these drives screwing people has been a KNOWN ISSUE for some time. How are these still for sale??!! I got a quote of $1200 for data recovery, and it could take a month with no guarantees. Who is going to pay for that San Disk?! These drives should have been recalled long ago, and now I have to refund two clients for having lost their images. I won't be buying San Disk (and definitely not WD drives) ever again, but I expect full compensation for drive replacement and data recovery.

No the good product to purchase. (2TB Extreme Pro)

I brought the Extreme PRO in Hong Kong. Which found the product defect that no connect stable. The speed for this defect product which meet 1200-1500MB/s. However, it is not connect stableize. I disconnect and sometime not able to connect. After working for all recommend by support and the product still the same. Then, WD support allow to do the DMR. But the send back were charge as no support certre in HK area even WD were not able to make the goods exchange from their centre. After the goods exchanged. The new one which the speed under 700MB/s. I check with support that they don't have any way to test their product can check the speed that they claim can be 2000MB/s. I felt disappoint on this product.

I was looking for a drive like this but I am reading just too many drive crashes from the reviews. I think I will pass on purchasing this drive.

Poor communication on firmware issue

SanDisk's Extreme and Extreme Pro portable SSDs are suddenly wiping data and are in some cases becoming unreadable. Complaints go back at least five months, and SanDisk has a hard time acknowledging the issue, providing a firmware and offering a refund. Overall, very poor communication. Will buy a different brand in the future.

Don't trust it with any data you aren't comfortable losing. Mine has wiped itself 3 times now, and i'm throwing it away.

Sandisk 4TB Extreme Pro Portable V2 failed

hi The positives about this item is it's small size and the overall design/construction.I loved the rubberized and pocket size of it. The negative is that after approximately 2 months using on MacOS Ventura it failed and could not be read. The disk just randomly one day needed to be reinitialized and formatted. But before I did that I had to recover my data with diskdrill which took about 4 hours on my M2 Max Macbook pro 16". I wish i read the reviews before purchasing it I only looked at youtube video's that talked about it's amazing speed which it did deliver but I can't trust it to store data safely. Lesson learned that hard way. hopefully sandisk can fix this or if it was a firmware update fix that would be even greater but now i guess i have to look at building my own external drive.

fast, lightweight, always on

I have two (although one had to be replaced by WD/Sandisk, since it never worked), and I have used them for a while without problems. I particularly like that they don't require 'spinning up' when I want access to the data, and are very responsive. They are somewhat faster than the HDD connected to the same computer even when those are spun up, but letting those drives rest when not needed seems to be prolonging their lives (I use them for 'hot backups' and long-term storage, while the SSD's are for actively processed data).

Don't buy this, it will just crash on you.

I've had several external hard drives over the years and never had one fail on me. I was excited for the size and speed of SSD so I gave this one a shot. It worked for maybe a month before completely dying. The repair functions don't work, my computer won't read it anymore, and everything I saved on it is gone. Save yourself the headache and choose a different option.

Random - Total Failure

These little guys are great while they last, but you better not rely on keeping anything important stored on these. Complete and total failure after only 2 years of use. I thought maybe the controller went bad, so even tore the housing apart and plugged the ssd directly into my motherboard but no, the whole drive was bad. Looks like this is a common thing. Crossing WD off my purchase list forever.

About SanDisk Extreme PRO V2

FEATURED REVIEWS

Best portable storage device ever!

By Javier

I am using this disk with a MacBook Pro. I partitioned it so I can use it as two disks. One partition is for Time Machine backups, and the other partition is for regular storage. This is a great portable solid-state device. I have only good things to say about it. It's fast, durable, portable, and looks great. I highly recommended it.
