I bought this drive to supplement the non upgradable 500Gb internal ssd on my wife's IMac. It's been in place for about a month now and is working great. The drive has Thunderbolt connectivity so it's as fast or faster than the internal ssd. And it's quiet (no moving parts). Time Machine backup works fine on it as well as the internal ssd so no issues there. All in all a good fit for additional storage.

The drive arrived in perfect condition and worked great. I do want to mention an important variable in its operation for any person thinking of buying such a high performance drive: sometimes when I plug it in using the supplied Thunderbolt 3 cable, or using an Apple Thunderbolt 4 cable, it will not show up on my MacBook Pro M2 Max. My best guess is that if too many PCIe lanes are occupied by other tasks, including other drives, it will not show up, not even in Disk Utility. This makes me nervous because I then do not have the option of ejecting the drive before disconnecting it. On the other hand, if I disconnect other drives first, the PRO-G40 will show up every time. Do not risk any damage to your PRO-G40. If possible, always connect your PRO-G40 before connecting other drives. Use the supplied Thunderbolt 3 cable or an Apple-branded Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 cable. Do not cover the drive with blankets or anything else that may trap heat. Always eject the drive properly.

No issues on Windows. I downloaded Knoppix (live Linux DVD) and used Rufus to make a bootable USB drive. Booted from the USB drive to load Knoppix. Launched G-Parted and formatted the APFS drive to NTFS. Drive now recognized in Windows 11. You could also use G-Parted Live as well but I prefer Knoppix.

This is an example of product marketing gone terribly wrong - for 66% less money just buy the APFS formatted version of this drive, and if you need exFAT format, just format the APFS version to whatever format you want.

I honestly can't give a fair review, for the fact that it's impossible to figure out how to reformat the drive for Windows. Plugged it in and the computer doesn't recognize it. Go to WD's support site and none of the the threads are informative or helpful. My Windows OS is fully updated, so there's no issues with that. I can't reformat the drive because, when I follow WD's step by step process, the disk isn't even recognized. I bought the Pro-G40 because my PC is Thunderbolt 3 compatible, and this would offer the best speeds. It's super disappointing that I can't even use the product, because it's not dual compatible out of the box. If you want this for Windows I wouldn't bother. The jumping through hoops is not worth the headache.

I used this to edit a pretty hefty video, and it never blinked. Everything worked up to speed and I never had any problems with its functionality. It did get a little hot, but that would be expected with the editing I was doing on it. It looks and feels like the quality product that it is.

I purchased the 2TB and the 4TB. I used bitlocker on one and kept one unlocked for my Mac. These are the two fastest drives I have ever bought and the build quality is excellent. They feel great in the hand. As everyone else notes, they run quite hot when transferring files. I dont notice excess heat unless I am transferring data. I also have a nice Samsung SSD. It is great but these are much quicker and have a better apparent build quality IMO. The heat has not produced significant transfer speed impacts in my usage but I rarely transfer anything over 100GBs. The only knock is that they are quite pricey but if you have the money, grab one. If you get one that isn't transferring 1 GB/s or better exchange it. Lemons are lemons.

It's hard to tell how fast and reliable it could be because it requires 3 amps to run. My laptop doesn't supply that current even when plugged in. A better design would be to have an extra USB port on it so that an external power supply could be connected.

I bought to store my photos library and hope that the speed would help handle the back and forth of working with photos on an external drive. It has improved some but not quite as much as I'd hoped. Does get pretty hot. Don't know why i th ought I needed to order a separate t3 cable as it came with one.

I can barely say anything good about this SSD because it simply doesn't even hit the speeds it claims. Connected through usb-c I barely get 40mb's read/write I can get it up to 450 mb's after unplugging then plugging it back in but it will again drop. I've never even seen 1000? this was a huge waste of my $$$ MY HDD IS FASTER? how?

Overall, the drive delivers impressive speeds of around 1500 MB/s for both read and write operations, making it one of the fastest SSDs I have ever used. However, the PRO-G40 suffers from a concerning flaw - it tends to heat up after prolonged usage. This increase in temperature impacts the drive's performance, leading to a noticeable decrease in speed, dropping to around 850 MB/s. When I reached out to the customer support team for clarification on whether the heating issue is normal or indicative of a problem. Unfortunately, my experience with the support agent was less than satisfactory. Instead of addressing my question or providing useful information, the agent seemed more interested in challenging my usage habits and questioning whether I had used the product correctly. This dismissive response left me feeling frustrated and unsupported, and it did not provide a resolution to my concern.

It generates a lot of heat and I'm not even moving files.

This Drive is really good, very fast and solid. My WD store experience however was very disappointing. I needed the drive very soon so upon ordering I paid a premium for expedited shipping. Problem was the WD store waited 4 days before they shipped the unit. By the time it arrived I was out of town shooting (I'm a commercial photographer) the job I wanted to use that drive on. When it was clear that the drive wouldn't arrive on time I reached out to WD customer service to cancel the sale and get a refund. An email arrived shortly afterwards expressing regret at my experience and I was told the carrier would be contacted, the unit recalled and a quick refund. The unit did arrive anyway and when I tried to contact WD customer service to arrange a return and refund, my email (which I had used to contact them successfully before) bounced back saying my email address was not trusted so I couldn't contact WD customer service using that account. So they win this battle, but lose a loyal customer.
