Hopefully this will provide long term picture storage. Device starts as read write and somehow somtime in the future changes to read only. A total mystery when that will happen. I filled one device (less than one RAW file space available) and it is still read/write. I bought the device based on SanDisk's reputation.

Good for up to 100 years is meaningless. Would rather have a guarantee of 50. Device eventually becomes read only. When this happens is clear as mud. Information is horrible, even on Sandisk website. Hopefully it will hold data for 50+ years.

Plugs into USB port with supplied short cable. Claims to have 100 year durability for storing files for posterity. No doubt that is true given the extreme physical protection of this unit, but I wonder if USB itself will be around 100 years from now. Also be mindful of what file format you store on it if 100 year accessibility is the goal. Compressed and/or proprietary file formats may not be the best choice. I knocked one star off the rating only because I question the practicality of using it 100 years from now. Other than that it would certainly be a 5 star item.

The drive itself is very sturdy with a heavy metal enclosure. Keep in mind that once you begin copying, this device has a limited amount of time that it can be written to. There is no way to know how long that time is. A controler on board the drive makes that determination to maximize the storage logenvity. Once it enters read only mode, if you disconnect the drive it can NEVER be written to again. It's best to get all the data you want to save organized before hand and then connect the drive. The "writeable" time is not based on capacity, so be aware that it may enter read only mode before you have filled it up. Just get your date ready in advance and you will not have any issues.

I rely on my photographs for a living and backups are essential. I have several Sandisk Memory Vaults for storing masters of important images. I keep them off-premise in a safe deposit box. I feel the Sandisk Memory Vaults are the most reliable backups for their cost and I can recommend nothing better among today's reasonably priced storage options.

I have experienced long term storage problems for my photography in the past. When a hard drive packed with my images inexplicably "bought the farm" the loss was painful. One lesson I learned was to break down my storage media into smaller units. I've therefore turned to these memory vaults as my primary backup and storage solution. They are simple to use and make organization a snap. I love the portability and use them like subject binders from my old slide storage days. At first I missed the larger storage capabilities of the large TB capacity units, but have discovered that 16GB "mini" vaults are perfect and far more efficient in organizing and recovering my files of images. So far the durability and performance have functioned seamlessly.

It is a very special usb flash drive. It is not a fast drive, but it is definely the most robust one. The metal case feels really thick.I think you can drive a car and run over it without losing your data. If you look for a flash drive to storage your most important files, I will highly recommend this product to you.

I use this to safeguard my MOST important images. 16GB is not that much, but enough for me to store a few hundred selected images for eternity.

The only protective, archival solid state memory for storing photos and documents. I use these for master photographs and keep them in safe deposit boxes. Nothing on the market is better or cheaper.
