UltraChrome HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a groundbreaking ink technology from Epson. It's a pigment ink system that significantly broadens the color spectrum, enhancing digital printing opportunities and catering to the package and remote proofing market segments.
The three-level black ink technology refers to the use of photo black, light black, and light light black inks. This technology provides a wide range of black shades, enhancing the depth and detail in prints.
Epson's AID system is designed to prevent downtime by detecting and minimizing nozzle clogging in advance. It uses a sensor near the print head that monitors the electrical charges on the ink droplets as they are fired. A lower than expected charge triggers the print head cleaning process automatically.
The high-capacity ink cartridges (350 and 700ml) lower the cost per milliliter of ink. They also reduce the frequency of cartridge replacements, promoting greater unattended printing and saving time and effort.
Compared to current 8-color 24 inch and 44 inch printers, the print speed of the Stylus Pro 7900 and Stylus Pro 9900 is dramatically increased. They can deliver high-quality prints on Epson's Premium Glossy Photo Paper in an impressive 5 minutes.

Under the banner of Epson's innovative technology, the Stylus Pro 7900 (24 inch) and Stylus Pro 9900 (44 inch) stand as the brand's premier ten-color printers. These models are equipped with the groundbreaking UltraChrome HDR (High Dynamic Range) ink technology, a pigment ink system that significantly broadens the color spectrum. This enhancement not only amplifies digital printing opportunities but also caters to the package and remote proofing market segments.
The UltraChrome HDR ink set is a high-density, resin-coated pigment ink formulation, featuring a three-level black ink technology - photo black, light black, and light light black. It also includes cyan, light cyan, vivid magenta, vivid light magenta, yellow, orange, and green. A matte black ink is also incorporated, which can be auto-switched with photo black for versatility.
This advanced generation of UltraChrome HDR ink offers a multitude of benefits. It reduces graininess in skin tone areas, provides smoother tonal gradation from shadows to highlights, and ensures excellent short-term color stability. Moreover, it guarantees outstanding long-term lightfastness, highly accurate color control with neutral black and white, and high gloss levels on water-resistant prints.
Epson's commitment to cost-effectiveness is evident in the introduction of two high-capacity ink cartridges (350 and 700ml). These cartridges not only contribute to a lower cost per milliliter of ink but also minimize the frequency of cartridge replacements, promoting greater unattended printing.
The Stylus Pro 7900 and Stylus Pro 9900 are equipped with Epson's MicroPiezo TFP (Thin Film Piezo) print head, which boasts 360 nozzles per inch for each of the ten active ink cartridges. This feature, combined with Epson's Ink Repelling Coating for the print head and Automatic Ink Detection (AID) system, helps to prevent downtime by minimizing and detecting nozzle clogging in advance, thereby eliminating paper waste during the cleaning process.
Epson's AID technology employs a sensor near the print head that monitors the electrical charges on the ink droplets as they are fired. A lower than expected electrical charge triggers the print head cleaning process automatically. Compared to current 8-color 24 inch and 44 inch printers, the print speed of the Stylus Pro 7900 and Stylus Pro 9900 is dramatically increased, delivering high-quality prints on Epson's Premium Glossy Photo Paper in an impressive 5 minutes.
