Slow focus and hunts a lot. Images comes out soft and not as sharp as I would prefer. It's one of Fujifilm's older lens so I understand the performance isn't that great. There are better options out there now.

This has quickly become my favorite lens on my XT4. It takes a while to get used to the clutch needed to activate autofocus, but it looks great, and image quality is fantastic.

Aluminum body, plastic lens hood, excellent color contrast and bokeh at f1.4, although not clinically sharp. Overpriced at $899, but worth a try at $699.

This is one of Fujifilm's best lenses. Incredibly sharp, yet with a lovely color rendering and smoothness. it is also fast to focus and quite small. The MF/AF clutch is absolutely idiotic and superfluous, however you will learn to live with it. The other drawback is that if you live in a dusty environment like the Southwest US, this lens will fill with dust within literally just a dozen or so hours of use, especially if you are swapping lenses frequently. Both the front and rear groups fill with dust. I send it in for cleaning so often that this is actually my second copy of this lens, as I got fed up borrowing a colleague's 23mm f/2 whenever I had to send my other 23mm f/1.4 in.

I purchased this lens very recently. In the short time I've had it and used it, I like it. It is compact and it lets in a whole lot of light!

If you've got a Fuji X-Series camera with the very respectable XF 18-55 f2.8-4 R OIS kit lens, and you'd like to explore the magic of Prime Lenses with a large aperture, this is the place to start. The value of the 23/1.4 lies in it's focal length, which is a very versatile 35mm Full-Frame equivalent, somewhere in the middle of the focal range of the XF18-55. It does a great job for almost all situations, and it'll happily shoot portraits, streetscapes, interior family shots, landscapes or anything you throw at it really. It may be difficult to justify the expense of Primes at wider/tele focal lengths like the excellent 16/f1.4 or 56/f1.2 unless you use them as professional tools or are a serious hobbyist, because they have a somewhat niche use-case, and if you're just starting to dip into Prime Lens territory, are not as forgiving when it comes to composition, framing, versatility and usage as this 23/f1.4. The lack of OIS is a non-issue, since this lens can gather much more light. The 23/f2 also exists, has weather sealing and is smaller, lighter, cheaper, and arguably faster focusing (since it's not moving so much glass about) - but I find it difficult to justify the expense of a prime if it's not significantly faster than the Kit Zoom, and half a Stop (f2 vs. f2.8) of light gathering ability isn't that much. You'll be much happier buying a combination of any two of the 35/f2, 50/f2, 18/f2 or 16/f2.8 lenses to round out a great Prime Lens set, as they'll see a more limited use compared to the versatile 23mm focal length - depending on your preferences.

90% of what I was expecting from the this lens. The remaining 10 percent is on the wide open sharpness and focusing speed. Not sure if it’s my copy, but I feel wide open sharpness is not as sharp as what review sites claim to be. I mean it’s good enough but I wold not say it’s very sharp at the center like what others say - copy variance? Once stop down to f2 it’s very good. For focusing speed I knew it’s the older design so I don’t expect very much but I do wish it can be a bit faster - I use it a lot with my toddler, comparing with 35 f2 that I have, the decrease in hit rate is noticeable. Overall 4 star as it’s pretty close to what I was expecting of the lens, very sharp and beautiful images when you nail the focus and stop down a little. At 1.4 it’s definitely usable but can’t say it’s super sharp.

Gorgeous images. Bokeh is creamy. Colors are vivid. Tack sharp. Fock us is decent! Looses a star for lack of weather sealing and noisy focusing motor that makes it unusable for video.

I love this lens! Its built quality is very good. It's not a perfect lens optically, no lens are optically perfect actually, but its flaws are nicely controlled and not distracting. Acceptable sharpness wide open center and corners, and very sharp across the frame around f4. Bokeh is wonderful and smooth. I can't ask for more from a lens at this price point.

This is a wonderful general-purpose prime lens with incredible sharpness wide open. Bokeh is smooth and refined, resulting in a rendering that's subtly but definitely prettier than 23/2 even at same apertures. Focus is mostly fine but can hunt/hesitate a bit compared to the newer Fuji lenses like the 23/2 and 35/2. Focusing noise exists but is well-muted. The AF/MF clutch mechanism is great to use.

I have to read the manual to figure out how to turn on the AF. Push the first grip ring upwards. This lens is a must to have. The range is perfect for portrait or indoor/outdoor short range. Super sharpe and clear. I bought it ($) OTD no tax with $100GC reward from adorama. It is a steal. I am sure 23mm will hold the value.

I know it's a fabulous lens but the copy I received was heavily decentered. Of course Adorama's return policy is fabulous and the lens is now on its way back for a refund. Conclusion, if you have the necessary knowledge to test this lens yourself and need the 1.4 go for it. If not, the 23mm f/2.0 is an excellent alternative.

The canon 35 f/1.4 is my favorite canon lens and the one that mostly stays on my 5DII. The canon lens is sharp and produces awesome colors. So the fuji lens has tough competition. This lens (fuji 23mm f/1.4) is 40% lighter and 40% cheaper and offers the same field of view on the fuji sensor. Colors are different than the canon lens, but it's hard to call them worse--and maybe it's due to the body and not the lens. Either way, the film simulation modes on the fuji cameras help here. I turned down the highlight and shadow tone and mostly use the "PRO Neg. Std" film setting and I'm pretty happy with the color I get. The only real downside of this system is that you lose a stop's worth of depth of field, the depth of field you get looks like a 35 f/2 would on a full frame system. But honestly this is far outweighed by my increased probability of actually picking up and using the camera/lens.

I shoot mostly nature photos and will use the 23mm fuji lens for taking fall photos including mushrooms and spiders. I enjoy the peaceful quiet outdoors. I would recommend this lens to those who like getting those close up shots.

Excellent image quality is the bottom line on this lens, but compared to other brands of recent AF lenses, the autofocus is audibly and tactilely a little jolting. I think I am spoiled by my Fujinon zoom lenses and the 90 f2.

When paired with an X-T1, this lens rocks the house. Focus is fast and accurate, even at f1.4. Colors look great. Mainly used for weddings, events, and personal use. It seems a little pricey, but its the best option out there for this focal length and speed.

I'm not a professional photographer so as far as anything technical, I can't give a great critique but I am an artist/designer and I know what looks good. This lens makes all my photos look good. I also own a Nikon dSLR with some pretty decent lenses but after shooting with this one on my X-E2, the Nikon has been sitting in the closet. The quality of the pictures are really remarkable.

Although often labeled as a street photography lens, I've been equipping my X-E2 with this lens for hiking day trips and very pleased with the prime. The size/weight is just at the border of heavy, but the trade off is tack sharp captures partnered with a creamy bright bokeh at F/1.4 (and everything in between). Especially appreciate the option to go into manual focus mode with a turn of a dial and a pull of the lens back for more precise focusing. This lens is basically staying on my camera 90% of the time now.

This is peerfect for street and candid photography. With the X Pro 1 it is fantastic because the sensor is outstanding in low light. It took some adjustments getting used to the push/pull function to turn on /off AF. But once I fully adjust to it will be worth a 5 star rating. I have discovered using the eye piece with macro mode turned on make the experience more like a DSLR especially for critical focusing in low light.

Fantastic lens

Sharp even wide open, aperture dial has some resistance, best Fujifilm X-series lens yet. Great optics.
The FUJINON XF23mm F1.4 R has a focal length equivalent of a 35mm lens, and is ideal for a wide range of applications including portraits and landscapes, as well as everyday photography. The fast maximum aperture of F/1.4 allows users to shoot hand-held in low light conditions and achieve sharp images, while also delivering beautiful bokeh for artistic images.
The FUJINON XF23mm F1.4 R provides enhanced resolving power with crisp contrast to draw maximum performance out of the highly descriptive X-Trans CMOS sensor. The fast F/1.4 aperture allows the user to reduce blurring in low light conditions and achieve stunning shallow depth to field photography.
The FUJINON XF23mmF1.4 R features a camera-to-subject distance indicator and a depth-of-field scale on the barrel. Both are useful when manually pre-focusing to capture a fast moving subject, or minimize the shutter lag to capture a fleeting moment.
Lens distortion has been reduced to an absolute minimum using only optical rather than digital correction, thereby delivering the highest possible picture quality. The rounded seven-blade diaphragm ensures smooth bokeh even when shooting portraits or product shots at a medium aperture to maintain reasonable depth-of-field.
The FUJINON XF23mmF1.4 R uses an internal focusing system which incorporates a lens group consisting of three cemented lens elements and one aspheric lens element in order to keep weight down. Additionally, the built-in high-torque DC coreless motor delivers ultra-fast AF performance for the most demanding shooting opportunities.
All lens elements are treated with Fujifilm's multilayer HT-EBC (High Transmittance Electron Beam Coating) which delivers enhanced durability and ensures an even spread of light across the sensor.
The FUJINON XF23mmF1.4 R weighs 10.6oz and measures just 2.84" in length making it the most compact and lightweight lens in its class. Metal parts are used for the focus and aperture rings, which are designed to give just the right amount of torque and feel.
