This was a purchase required by our company software. It is a fast scanner and does not pull multiple pages through which speeds up my workload on a good day. The only downside is that it is very finicky and it will say it is jammed or will not pull paper through if there is a tiny crease in the paper in a certain spot.

WARNING: This scanner is ONLY with capatible with OS X El Capitan 10.1. Since that is an awful version, don't buy this HP ScanJet. Buy a 2000 s1 or a 3000 s3 instead!

After having completed a paid survey for purchasing a desktop scanner, I was informed that the company that had contracted the survey was Hewlett-Packard and that they would like for me to review a scanner after which I could keep. Hardware: 5 stars (easy to maintain, fast) Software: 3+ stars (could be more intuitive or have better help/instructions) I have 8 years of experience using a comparable scanner (in price) from another manufacturer which I will call "X scanner" in this review. Our company has several that get used daily in a dirty manufacturing environment averaging 800+ pages per day. Installation of the drivers and software was as easy as anyone should expect from an HP product. The power and USB cables included were longer than I would normally expect which was great since I have a standing desk that sits quite a bit higher than the CPU and wall outlet. The HP has a small, bright LCD screen that shows which scan profile is currently selected and up/down arrow buttons to switch between them. It doesn't give as much information as "X scanner" but most of the same info is available in the Scanner Tools Utility and isn't something that you need to see often. It does seem odd that when you press the Tools button on the scanner it tells you to use the software on the computer. There is a slider switch for duplexing type (book vs tablet) but it wasn't really clear how it is designed to function. After speaking to the HP product rep I found out that it can be used to scan folded paper without jamming. Cool feature that I had never even considered. I like the simplex and duplex buttons on the scanner but only because the HP software doesn't auto-duplex as well as "X scanner." I think the roller design on the HP is superior to "X scanner" (which is pretty good). Whoever designed that part of this scanner should be put in charge of overseeing ALL hardware design at HP. It is so simple that it is almost a marvel of engineering. We don't normally have a need for OCR just a basic pdf that looks exactly like the original with a reasonable file size. The HP Smart Scan software is capable of many features that I have come to expect like straightening page content and removing holes. It also has a lot of features that would be useful for the right application but that I did not spend much time evaluating since I do not use them. Digital signatures on pdfs, many file types including .epub, .htm, .jpg, .xls, .xlsx, pptx, .docx, .png, .tif, .xml and several others. OCR in many languages. This scanner is incredibly fast on 300 ppi and lower resolutions. Once you bump it to 400 ppi or higher the speed decreases noticeably but 300 ppi is normally high enough for most text heavy documents. The HP has more options for scanning at various ppi which I guess is nice but since storage is so cheap we scan almost everything at 300 ppi. The challenge was configuring the software to produce the scanned results that I was looking for. My first impression of the scanner's ability to reproduce color accurately was not good. I tried scanning again using a TWAIN driver compatible software that I sometimes use with "X scanner" and the color looked great, so it was the software that was the issue. It took some tweaking of the settings to get good color replication with a similar file size as my regular scanner. This has been the only frustrating thing. Even though there is a setting in the profile to auto detect color this software does not do a good job of detecting small amount of color even at the highest detection setting. If you need to scan pages that are mostly B&W with a color signature you have to set the profile to Color with no auto detect. I discussed this with a tech from HP and suggested that they offer a few more default profiles with more explanation about what you should expect from each. I spent a lot of time changing settings on the HP software to try and get it to better duplicate the results that I have come to expect from the "X" scanner's software. There are a lot more settings to manipulate on the HP which I imagine is great for some peoples' needs but just prolongs the process of getting the scan results that I was looking for. I mainly scan invoices, AutoCad drawing files, checks, contracts, just business documents in general. "X" scanner was definitely easier to just install the software and get it to work with great results for simple archiving purposes. However, if you need any of the additional features that the HP software offers you would have to buy some after market TWAIN driver compatible software and hope for the best. I spent quite a bit of time on the phone with the HP product rep and the R&D tech. They were very interested in my suggestions for minor changes to the software such as additional default profiles with explanations of each that would probably eliminate the issues that I had.
