HP Designjet 130R 24" Large-Format Color Inkjet Printer - 2400x1200dpi up to 6 Min/Page, USB, 64MB

The HP Designjet 130r is one of the best printers I have owned. You can leave this printer in standby for several months, turn it on, and print without any issues with clogged nozzles. I have a 24" x 30" print, which has been hanging in my living room in full daylight for three years without any fading. One feature I really like is the option to set the level of ink you want to use in your prints, which works great with both Windows 7 and Mac OSX. The color accuracy is very good, particularly when calibrated with a Datacolor Spyder 3. It's a little slow for large prints, but it's so reliable, which is the most important factor in my work.

It works great. Bought one for work to print large banners and posters. Sticking with Windows XP Pro because I am more comfortable with the old Corel Ventura Publisher program. I only wish that this printer were an Adobe Postscript level 3—later bought HP EFI RIP Designer Edition (which cost a fortune), but without having to even calibrate the screen (have Spyer, but never got around to using it), the print out actually matches the screen. Ink is not cheap, but the printer is very frugal about how much it uses the ink. By the way - I bought HP Every Day Pigment paper by mistake - it prints greenish - but switching the setting to "HP Matt" (using EFI RIP), it works fine. Another thing is that if you use the roll, leaving the paper in the machine leaves roller marks on it. Eject the paper if you're shutting down the machine over night prevents that.

The DesignJet 130nr produces very acceptable line drawings and preliminary photos/graphics/etc., but the photo capabilities are grossly overrated. We use the printer primarily for architectural construction documents, but needed a large format printer capable of producing 24" x 36" color renderings and presentation materials as well. We're a low volume shop, so the cost savings realized by purchasing the 130nr (as compared to it's bigger brothers) was a significant issue of course, but the relatively slow print speed wasn't a consideration. Based on the information contained on HP's website, it appeared that the 130nr would do "professional photos" and had "exceptional fade resistance" utilizing Vivera inks and HP paper. Unfortunately, in our use we find the photo quality to be good, but the prints (even indoors) fade drastically in a number of days, not years as we expected. For comparison, we also have a HP8550 Photosmart printer that uses Vivera inks, and have placed identical prints done on the same HP photo paper with the 8550 next to ones printed on the 130nr. The prints done on the 8550 show no signs of fading several months later, but the 130nr prints are fairly well washed out soon after hanging. In conversations with HP support personell, (who I might add were very forthright and helpful), we were told that the Vivera ink in the 130nr cartridges is formulated differently than the Vivera ink in the 8550 cartridges. As a result, the inks for the 130nr were not designed to produce long lasting prints, even on photo paper. To ensure the longevity of prints and photos would require the purchase of one of the "bigger brothers" that used a better quality ink, not available for the 130nr. Overall, the 130nr rates 3 stars, primarily due to the limitations caused by print fading. Had we known the color photo/graphics would be short lived, our expectations would have been considerably lower and the subsequent rating somewhat higher. The 130nr is a very competent, flexible large format printer for short lived B&W or color line drawings, but we would not recommend it for any use beyond that.

This printer produces terrific photo large format prints. It has served me well in my architectural needs as well. It was easy to setup, no problems with driver installation. Overall a quick and easy procedure. The different size formats that are available make it that much more usable for me.
