Horrible printer DO NOT BUY

Do not buy this printer! IT SUCKS! Has major connection issues never works and blasts threw ink faster than any printer I have ever used. Absolutely worthless.

Don't buy this

I bought this printer a little over a year ago when I started working from home during the pandemic, and had no issues with it other than the fact that the paper tray doesn't even hold a ream of paper. It holds more like 50 sheets max. Once I started back in the office, I didn't need to use this printer much. I started using it again last month, only to discover that I can no longer scan unless I'm hardwired the computer, because web services have been disabled for this particular product. I only found this out after scouring HP community forums. The software that I downloaded when I got this printer now suddenly has malware in it and is unusable. When I went to download new software, I was directed to download HP Smart from the app store. I did that, which is when I discovered that while my scanner works, the pages just go through the ADF but don't save anywhere. And you have to pay $20 to even talk to tech support. I'm getting a new Epson for the same price, which is MUCH faster and holds 5x the amount of paper in the tray. So long HP, I won't be buying your products anymore.

Doesn't print very well.

I have had this printer for approximately 3 years now and when I replace the ink cartridge it will print ok for a short time of maybe a week then all my pages look like there is a space laterally in a sentence cutting all the words in half top to bottom.

Great printer!

I have had mine for at least two years I think, and I haven't had any problems with it. The ink program is fantastic because HP sends me ink with free shipping when the cartridges are low. I never run out of ink in the middle of a project now. It's much more economical than our previous printer. Having read the reviews of unhappy buyers, I have to say that the only time ours doesn't print remotely is when our wi-fi service goes out briefly. Otherwise, it's simple to print from our computers and our phones. I'm very happy with it.

photo tray problem

Purchased, used and then Photo Tray Blocked message showed up. Nothing jammed by Photo Tray will not lock in place so now I need a new printer. Bummer.

Definitely an asset!

I would say that my HP printer has been an asset to my business. I use this printer at home to support work. The resupply of ink through the HP Instant ink program works magnificently. I would recommend this printer for anyone who has to work from their home to support another office

No more updates available

I bought this printer about 1 year ago at the full price. I am not surprise to see it at this low price. I can no longer use the wireless printing option. I tried all the solution proposed and nothing work. Now I have a printer that no longer works. And you can't download more updates at it is no longer supported by HP"

5740 would be great if paper sensor worked.

This would be a great printer if the paper sensor wasn't total junk. Several dozen sheets of paper in the tray, yet it constantly thinks it is empty. Complete hit or miss as to whether it detects paper. Everything else is fine, but that one problem is a constant annoyance.

Horrible. Don't buy it

Drops off line all the time. Always needed a new driver and then that didn't fix it. Constantly on the phone with help desk. Unable to scan, etc. Don't buy it

All-time Best Printer Ever Owned

This printer amazed me because of the following: - Print just works on or off network from any device - Scan just works from device or to device - WiFi just works - Cloud just works - Copy just works - Scan to usb etc. just works - Prints from PhotoShop just works and color perfect - Prints from LightRoom just works and color perfect I color correct my monitor with a color calibration tool or with you can use windows calibration so that what I see on screen is correct. When I print, what I see on screen matches what I print so the colors for HP are excellent. When I capture a picture captured from iPhone then print, the colors are a little dark but if I upload an image to iCloud and print that is corrected to my calibrated screen and then the picture is perfect so I think iPhone/iPad drivers are capturing images a little dark but showing on screen normal. This is an iPad/iPhone camera capture issue as it relates to printing in general. That same iPhone/iPad driver prints perfectly images I upload that are correct which is why I say this. I hope this information helps others. Bottom line, I am 55 and this is the best printer I have owned so far after owning: HP, Dell, Epson, etc.

Performance

This is a god printer by HP for the performance is good plus setting up the fax was a breeze, all in all I would definitely recommend this printer..Just one more thing I didn't get a chance to use the Flash Drive yet.

This printer is VERY noisy at times.

Noisy since purchase... ---Mostly when it is called on to print after being idle for a period of time; hour or two. Grinding noise like the teeth of drive belt or associated gear train members are not meshing properly. While it seems to work OK otherwise the noise seems to point to a short life span. Disappointed in this product from HP.

Great Printer!

Very easy to set up! Great color printing and works great with any WiFi device. Would have only wished it had a tad bit larger display. Enjoy!

Inhales Ink

Very nice printing results, but this machine burns through ink like a 1975 Buick Special burns through oil.

Atrocious.

Where to begin. First, the scanner fails to connect wirelessly to the computer (the printer connects fine). Then, when sending by email instead, the printer fails to attach the scanned document to the email. Then the scanner loses connectivity to our network (even though all other devices in the home never drop their signal whatsoever). Then the scanner finds my wife's computer but not mine. Then the scanner loses connectivity whenever her computer goes to sleep (other printers never had this problem). And on and on. One problem solved, another emerges. (Note: All necessary applications have been downloaded, installed and re-installed.) Never mind that you can't change the quality of the scan via the device's interface (can only be done via computer); that photos can only be scanned at minimal quality; that single-page scans done by laying the document on the glass will invariably get cut off; that multi-page scans that can't be fed through the feeder (i.e. passports) will invariably be disconnected mid-scan; that sometimes the scanner will add a block of blank space to the bottom of each page scanned; that the screen will show "Preparing to Scan" for minutes on end; that scans take longer than my previous, 7-year-old printer... and on and on. I really look forward to the reply from "HP Customer Care Specialist", who will no doubt try to connect me to a troubleshooting link that leads to a 404 error, or to a toll-free number that won't allow me to speak to a human being.

Officejet 5740 vs. 8610

Having previously owned an HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 I was very pleased with its operation and the quality of its printouts. As much as I liked it, it did have some serious issues. So I went with the OfficeJet 5740. While the quality of the 4 ink cartridges is somewhat better than the 5740, there is a dramatic difference in price. The 8610 full set of high yield cartridges cost $128 (retail) compared to the 5740's full set for $76--a savings of $52. The other major difference is that the 8610 is a hefty printer weighing 26 pounds compared to the 5740's weight of 17 pounds. If you have to move the 8610, this is a hefty chore. The good news is that the features and printouts of the 5740 are solid performers. With a discount under $100, the 5740 offers duplex printing, faxing, scanning, a document feeder and 2 memory slots. Yes, these features can be found in more expensive printers, but not the value found in the OfficeJet 5740.

Seems like a good printer so far....

Have not used this very much yet, so difficult to pass judgement. Have printed a few web pages fine. Tried faxing, and it worked fine for that. Hard to find complete instructions for faxing. Could not figure out how to fax using the built-in small control panel. Had to do it using my computer. Printer did not revert to normal printing mode on it's own after faxing. Had to figure that out myself. So far it seems to work fine, just the instructions leave out important steps.

Worst Printer I have ever owned

I always use HP and have been very satisfied with them - actually very happy with them. I purchased this printer with confidence and hate it. The ink runs out almost over night with almost no use - way too expensive to use. The wifi quits working for no reason. I am going to get rid of it and purchase another printer - not sure what brand yet but this one is absolutely no good to me. I run a business and it's not financially feasible for me to use this printer.

EASY TO SET UP AND USE

Just bought this printer- set it up and printed from my phone and Kindle within minutes- EASY to set up IF you read the instructions!! I don't use the double sided print so I have no problem with it. Photos seem easy but you do have to be right there to load up photo paper. I had a 2013 HP 6700 which was too big and never worked SO I WAS HESITANT to buy another HP but SO FAR I LOVE THIS 5740.

Only Minor Problems

I guess some of the other reviewers got lemons. I purchased a 5740 today, and it does provide automatic duplex printing and has not complained of being out of paper. I did encounter the problem about photo printing; when I selected the photo tray in print setup, the software still assumed I was using plain paper. If, instead, I chose the shortcut Photo Printing with White Borders, the software decided I was using 4x6 photo paper, but continude to assume I was printing from the main tray. This seems sort of brain dead. There were some problems with installing drivers and such. I wanted to download the current drivers from the HP web site onto my desktop computer. The Start Here booklet sent me to 123.hp.com where I encountered a drop down list that did not include the 5740. Things went better when I went to the printer manual; it directed me to 123.hp.com/OJ5740, which had a drop down list that included the 5740. Unfortunately, while I was able to select the Officejet 5740, clicking on the Begin button had no effect. (I use Firefox; maybe the Microsoft browser would have worked better.) I finally clicked on Support at the top of the page, selected Software & Drivers and finally got to the screen for downloading the drivers, etc. for the 5740. HP needs to fix its web site. One funny thing about the installation instructions is that they did not mention connecting the USB cable from printer to computer. I believe they were fixated on wireless. Now to see how long the printer will work as it should. The 5740 is a replacement for another hp printer that stopped working properly less than 2 years after I purchased it.

Returning

I agree with many of the others. I cannot print on both sides, I have gone through 3 black inks in 2 days! Returning first thing but unfortunately I need to make copies now & have to go buy more ink. Worst HP product I've ever had.

Even when you choose "print on both sides", it only prints on one side. Total waste!

Not worth the money

For basic printing this will do the job - but - the photo tray is pretty much useless. The printer will not let you specify different paper types for the 2 paper trays. So every time you want to print a photo you have to go into the preferences and point the printer to the photo tray and change the paper type to photo paper. And you have to do this for each photo your want to print. I tried contacting the HP support but that was a waste of time. and provided no solutions. This is the first HP printer that I have purchased and it found it to be a waste of time and money.

Dont Bother

Useless, after 3/4 weeks the printer falls off the network and will not print wirelessly. It also does that lovely trick of saying it has no paper loaded when it does even when its hard cabled (because the wireless functions ate useless). We have multiple computers with the same problem. Im asking for a refund.

Land Lines for Fax

If this is a HP all- in-one up to date printer, it should not need a land line to fax. Why don't you try for that. One other thing the printer runs out of black ink to quickly. And it is not because I'm doing a lot of printing.

I am so frustrated. About to throw it out.

I am paying for ink, but I doubt that I will have this long enough to need any. The printer tells me out of paper every time I want to print. Reload paper tray, listen to the internal workings of the printer, and then the darn message appears. This problem is mostly with the photo print feature, but it also occurs occasionally with plain text. Came here for forum help, but all I see is an ad for possible assistance for $$$.

Excellent printer!

Does everything well. Double-sided printing, scanning, copying and nice to have a separate built in tray for 4x6" photo printer. Best HP home printer I've had in many years.

After a lot of research, reading customer reviews, and doing a consumer reports search, I finally decided on the officejet 5740. It has turned out to be an excellent decision.
