Be aware this item comes with trial amounts of ink. In my case, after setup, I printed 25 pages before printing stopped and the inkjet cartridge indicated empty. Also, check the prices frequently. Yesterday the price was $129.00.

I am amazed at how fast this thing prints. Just seems impossible to print so fast and so well. The finest print is very readable, text is easy in the eyes and tack-sharp. Photos are decent quality for a four-color printer; worthy of greeting cards, postcards, something you'd hang in your cubicle or on a bulletin board, but maybe not something you'd frame and hang on the wall. We've used this printer heavily at work for months, and have not had one single paper jam. It is not all that quiet; in fact it makes this cool screeching-tire sound when it's fussing with its ink cartridges. But it prints so darn fast the noise is not an issue. I am going to buy one for my home office. Until I do, I'll fantasize about how I'm going to destroy the wretched pig of a DJ 6840 that the it will replace, which needs its "Resume" button pressed at least four times whenever it prints anything.

I bought this print 9 months ago and have not had a problem. I print approximately 5,000 sheets per month with roughly 1,500 photo quality on photo paper 8x10 or brochure quality paper. This a great printer for my business and personal use.

I have to configure the printer as if it is two, one with spooling and one without spooling. Some applications (notabley Quicken and Publisher) would only print with spooling disabled and others would only print with spooling inabled. So I have two K5400 printers installed on the same IP address (mine are networked) named different to differentiate between spool and non-spool capability. Inconsistant with HP quality and reliability.

All the negative reviews of this printer made me wary so I did a lot of research before buying it, even going so far as to learn about dye versus pigment based inks and which inks are used for which colors. The printer arrived recently and today I set it up, which takes a while but is not difficult. It works fine (with Vista) except one print job seemed to hang and trying to cancel it seemed to hang too, but the job finally did cancel. Since then all print jobs have worked fine. The printer prints fast with good quality, but I am only printing black text so far. There were many concerns expressed in reviews about ink coming off on one's hands or ink smudging, but this has not been a problem at all for me so far, perhaps because of printing in black ink. I also really like the low cost per page. One minor point is that the printable area seems to start farther from the top margin than my old HP 930C, which we are actually still using. So the printer has to compress everything slightly to fit it into the printable area. I am actually a CS prof but that has little relevance for this subject.

Right from the first test pattern this model had missing resolution lines. This is the second HP InkJet we purchased and the technology surrounding the printing inks and heads is poor. Hard to clean. Expensive to replace. And easily clogged. Did I mention that the install disk was warped and scratched and the web site does not offer the same install software, unless you purchase it, of course. The software that was downloaded was never recognized by WinXP and the unit was invisible on our network. Returned it in one day. Buy a laser printer.
