Questions & Answers

Shopper : Q. I have Nikon S8000 and I want to take underwater Micro shots, if I set the camera to Micro mode and attach the Ikelite Macro Adapter for 3.9" Ports will this be enough or do I have extra accessory to perform this task?RICHAD C : The adapter all by itself will do nothing to improve your Nikon's macro capabilities. The adapter is just a mounting that allows you to attach an external "wet" macro lens (diopter) to your camera's underwater case. The adapter does not include the needed add-on lens. Inon, Subsee, and others make macro diopters or external wet lenses with 67mm threads that can be used with the Ike adapter. The Ikelite macro adapter will allow you to attach any of these to the front of your Ikelite case lens port. You attach the external wet lens to the macro adapter, then you can simply slide the whole thing onto the front of your case underwater, any time you want to take a very close-up (macro) shot. In general, external "wet" lenses are used to let you get closer to the subject than your camera's built-in "close-up" setting will allow. Many users find they do not need to use the built-in "close-up" setting when using external macro lens attachments. Selecting the "right" macro lens combination for your purposes is a separate subject, but the Ikelite adapter should work with any 67mm threaded wet lens. The adapter (with attached external macro lens) is easily attached and removed underwater; I carry mine (with macro lens attached) in a BC pocket, then slide it onto the case when I find a shot that needs it. I use two Inon 165-AD wet lenses (stacked) with the Ikelite Macro adapter to achieve super-macro focal lengths with a Canon G12 in an Ikelite case. BTW, you don't mention what underwater case you are using -- pay close attention to Ikelite's recommendations in terms of what cases this adapter works with. Same for the (additional) external macro diopter(s) you select. The Ike adapter's instructions can be found and browsed online if you'd like to check more before you buy.RICHAD C : The adapter all by itself will do nothing to improve your Nikon's macro capabilities. And yes, you need to put your camera in macro mode Pros: 1/ with that system, you can change underwater of mode macro / normal mode and reverse 2/ the macro lens will reduce the focus distance so you can bet extremely close to you subject, diminishing the amount of water between the camera and the subject (less backscatter effect) Cons: using this system means that you have a black zone around your subject. To eliminate it, either you need to zoom (and augment the focus distance to your subject) or you need to re-frame your picture on the computer (that's what I do) If you find a macro lens of the size of the casing's lens, that even better... and then you don't need that adapter (from the tip of my head it must be a 90mm, but you'll need to check that). I didn't find any. So, conclusion : to do macro pictures, you need your camera + underwater casing + the adapter + a macro lens (+ a strobe if you want better result)

About Ikelite Macro Adapter for 3.9" Ports

Allows for the attachment of 67mm threaded macro lenses from Inon and Epoque. The adapter slides onto the front of the existing lens port without modification. As the adapter may be removed and replaced while underwater, there is no limit to the camera's zoom capabilities.

As the adapter blocks a significant portion of the port's front element, it should only be used with a macro lens installed.

This adapter does not allow effective use of the external wide angle conversion lenses. For wide angle photography, we recommend the #6340.4 WD-4 Wide Angle Conversion Dome.
