For the price, this German made Leica has "M"-like qualities, is quiet, fast, takes excellent RAW, jpeg, and can be fitted with outstanding 4/3 bayonnete Leica and the excellent Olympus Zuiko lenses. A large and moderately priced choice. I shoot RAW, and really have fallen in love with the capture CMOS definition. It has those small, easy, intuitive tools the Leica "M" series has, but does show a bright TTL view (not a range finder). I take this with my Canon, Contax, and Nikon high end gear. It captures shots I cannot get or have trouble getting with the other cameras. It's light, rugged, extremely usable Prosumer, Pro tool. Very high capture detail (in RAW) unexpected in an easy-to-use model. The lenses are to die for, including the "made from the bottom up for digital image capture" Zuiko lenses. (Made by Olympus - look them over) I've been doing nature, surprise object find, and sport photography for 51 years (mostly Leica and Canon backs and lenses). This is an unexpectedly high grade tool and easy to use, carry, store. Careful on zoom lenses. This takes such crisp, well balanced color, a middle range lens would turn it into an also-ran. I try to use fixed lenses, except for 24mm to 100mm range. Excellent histogram detail, but lacks top range versatility of best matrix auto-focus. I use it manually unless something pops up, and i quickly switch to their auto-program. 16 bit detail depth is stunning.

Focusing (using the adapter ring) with my other Leica lenses is unacceptable. Other than that I love my Digilux-3. The controls are a little "soft" compared to my R-7, but easy to get use to.

This is a beautifully engineered piece of equipment. Feels solid in the hand, very fluid burst sequence, great with light metering and so convenient with the 14-50mm lens that effectively can be the only lens you will need - don't get me wrong though, I am eagerly awaiting the release of the 28-300 mm telephoto zoom lens in November 2007. I sold my $5000. Nikon D100 system for this unit and I have not regretted that decision for a minute. the convenience of having this quality optics all bundled into a camera bag that is 0.5 square feet in volume. Great for travel, great for kids parties, great for photographing my sets (lens is just wide enough). The only flaw in this camera that I have bumped up against is the Live view LCD monitor. It is pretty much unusable for hand held photography, and is only effective for tripod mount photography.
