Excellent developer with consistent results for all black and white films.

Great developer.

Great all around developer.  Some people say developer X will have finer grain, or developer Y will have better contrast.  This is just a good all around developer.  Reading the data sheets for most Ilford film they usually recommend this one unless you're trying to get certain pronounced features.

While it's recommended to be be one time use, you can actually re-use it 10 times adjusting the develop time up 10% with each roll (more info in the instructions/data sheet)

Great all around developer.

I recommend this developer for any film photographer that is looking to push their b/w film. The consistent results I get from Ilford DDX is why I use this as my main developer.

Great all purpose developer. I've now used this with a number of different film stocks and it gives great results with consistent grain structure.

Great All Purpose Developer

Easy to mix, easy to use. This is my favorite developer for use with Ilford film. It produces much nicer grain than what I was previously using (Rodinal). The only downside is that that it uses a 1:4 mixing ratio as the stock concentration. This means you’ll be lucky to squeeze out 10 rolls from this bottle, depending on tank size. Still, the cost is well worth it. When it comes to developing Ilford film, I don’t use anything else.

First time home developing in many years. Ilford's chemicals are well priced, easy to understand, and I have gotten very nice results with HP5+. Will buy again.

Easy, cheap, repeatable results.

My usual developer is HC110 but I had some delta 3200 that i needed to push a bit so I bought this. Worked really well. Be aware though that some people report the published time of 9 1/2 minutes for delta 3200 @ 3200 ISO is too short. Published time for 6400 was 12 1/2 minutes so I split the difference at 11. Worked out well.

Good with Tmax400 and Tx400

This was my first time developing film myself.  I just followed the instructions, and it turned out great.  So far I've used this with fresh Ilford Delta 100, Kodak T-Max 400 that expired in 1995, and Kodak Verichrome Pan that was exposed around 1964.  Of course it worked perfectly with the fresh Ilford film, but also did great with the older films.  Great product for a beginner!

Easy to use for a first timer

I don't like storing chemicals once they're diluted - so this is great. I mix what I need and I'm done. I've only developed a couple of rolls in this so far, but the results look promising. I've done rolls of  TMAX 400 and TriX 400.

Good deal for me

I have been developing film since 1972. This Ilford product is a clear liquid, low odor great film developer. I use it 1+4 11.5 min @20c for Ultrafine Extreme 400 iso bw film.

Photographer since 1973

I'm relatively new to B&W film as I've only seriously gotten into it in the last couple of years.  I've tried a few different developers, including D-76, a general developer and Perceptol for fine grain films like Pan-F.
I found DD-X to be more convenient to work with initially as I didn't have to make up the stock.  Also, coming in a smaller size liter bottle it seems to keep for a lot longer than Ilford says that it will.  I don't do a ton of developing and a bottle will last me 9+ months.  I also found after doing some film testing with Ilford Delta 100 sheet film that the developing times are actually relatively short with this developer.  My "normal" development time is just under 6 minutes.  About half the advertised time for this film.   I guess this implies that DD-X is more of an agressive developer.  I use it at 1+4 dilution.  You could use it more diluted and stretch the development times, but I prefer to get the process over with quickly.  Using it at this time and concentration I've not noticed any degradation in highlights or shadows.  Before I did the film testing, I was noticing that my highlights were starting to feel over developed  (with DD-X).
Honestly, I've not found or noticed any downsides to DD-X.
