HP5 consistent and flexible.

I enjoyed the consistency and flexibility of this film, especially when developed in Rodinal 1+50. I have tried boutique or small company films, but have had inconsistent results that won't do for assignment work or special family events. I keep coming back to this film, since it has never failed me.

Good Customer Service on Frustrating Experience

This is great film at a fair price. Unfortunately I made a huge order to stock up and then it got stolen off my porch. To their credit, adorama worked with me and stayed on top of UPS to get me a refund. Frustrating experience but Adorama handled it well and I would order from them again.

Great for medium-format shooting

The high ISO of Ilford HP5 offsets the handicap of slower medium format lenses, yet its tonal range is wide and its grain is well controlled.

Ideal for novice film photographer

From my perspective of a novice in film photography, Ilford HP5+ is an ideal b&w film. The exposure latitude is forgiving. The 400 ISO is versatile for a lot of lighting situations. Probably most importantly, it's pretty affordable. I feel comfortable experimenting a bit without being as worried as I would about wasting a roll of $18 film.

I really love the look of HP5

By Stephen A.

I've always heard Tri-X is the best black and white film, but to be perfectly frank, I really love the look of HP5. It's not as contrasty, so if high contrast is what you want, perhaps it's better to stick to the classic; but what I do notice is that there is a lot more tonal range in this film, and that it pushes very well. Shooting at speed renders clean images, articulate, detailed, not particularly grainy; pushed to 800 and the grain becomes more apparent but not in an unflattering way.

Yes, push it!

By The K.

When I shoot in bright conditions and don't want grain, I go to Pan F Plus, also by Ilford. But when I want gritty BW photos in any light, I go for HP5 Plus. I'm a new user to this film, but it's already my go-to for BW shooting when speed is of the essence. Ilford claims HP5 Plus is formulated for push processing, and I believe it. It's a pretty average film when shot as rated, but when you shoot it at 800 or even 1600, it becomes grainy, gritty, contrasty and beautiful. I'm a little cr...

HP5 Plus is a fast black and white film. It is ideal for action, available light and general purpose photography. It is designed to give optimum results under most lighting conditions and when processed in a wide range of developers. HP5 Plus is rated at ISO 400/27 Degree when exposed to daylight. HP5 Plus has the fine grain, good edge contrast and sharpness required to give excellent image quality. These characteristics give prints with outstanding brightness and a full tonal range. HP5 Plus, though, is more than an ISO 400/27 Degree film. By extending development with some developers, for example ILFORD ILFOTEC HC and ILFORD MICROPHEN, it is possible to use meter settings up to EI 3200/36. This makes HP5 Plus the ideal film for all photography where factors such as poor lighting and moving subjects demand greatest emulsion sensitivity. HP5 Plus is compatible with all current processing systems including those which give the standard short fixing and washing times. There is no need to change standard processing techniques when switching to HP5 Plus, or any other ISO 400/27 Degree film. HP5 Plus is very robust during processing, giving excellent results under most conditions, and will also tolerate processing conditions that are less than ideal. HP5 Plus 35mm film is supplied in DX Coded cassettes, so the film speed of ISO 400/27 Degree is set automatically on automatic 35mm cameras. These cassettes are very strong and have the end caps firmly fixed to the body. This ensures the caps remain in position during rough handling. The combination of the tangential style cassette and the film's low friction characteristics allows the film to advance easily, thus saving battery wear. The base tint of HP5 Plus enables easy print contrast assessment on a light box. For easy negative identification, it also has bold frame numbering for whole frames and letters to indicate half frame numbering.
