The standard

I mean, it's Hp5, one of the most reliable workhorse films around. Perfect if you need a bit of speed and holds up well even pushing it to 1600. What's not to like?

My go-to film for decades, HP5 shines in many situations.

I've used HP5 for decades, from 35 to 4x5, and it's nearly my only film now. I use only D-23, but I can get just about any kind of negative I need with thoughtful exposure and processing. In 4x5, that typically means anything from a very long-range scene to a very flat one, with ratings from 200 to 800. My work does not require the high acutance and absolutely grainless appearance that some require from enormous prints. Remember that even a 16x20 is only just over a 4x enlargement, so even with significant cropping, a 4x5 neg printed to 11x14 is grainless (and 645 negs very fine grain indeed). The speed and versatility of this film are reliable and often a choice for fine printers.

Long, long life

I’ve had this brand of film unused in 8X10 holders stored in my basement for 7 years, not even protected from moisture or humidity. COVID caused me to get out my old Korona (!) and test the film in it. Eureka! - perfect results! So I used it for a Christmas portrait of my little granddaughters. Their Mom’s so happy with it she’ll use it for their card.

My mainstay

I am new to 8 x 10 format and in the process of getting my new/old recently acquired Deardorff together. I shoot mostly medium format and always use HP-5, so I figure I'll stay consistent and with what works for me in my new challenge of shooting large format.

It's fast enough to be a help under studio lighting, very consistent

Using 8X10 film in the studio to shoot still life photos. Normally I shoot available light outdoors, but I have a special place for still life shooting. No point in shooting a STILL life...they have to be moving. I'm using a Deardorff 8X10 and HP5 film. It's fast enough to be a help under studio lighting, very consistent.

Good stuff!

Eight days in the desert around Shiprock photographing with 5X7 film. I used HP5. It seems to be the last good sheet film, as good as or better than old Tri-X. I like having the extra ISO speed, even off a tripod because I am frequently in the wind or adding filters. Good stuff!

Great film to work with

I recently bought a 75mm pinhole camera to reintroduce myself to b&w photography and introduce my daughter to film and film photography. We went out to Prospect Park and took a bunch of shots under the bright sun a couple of weeks ago and had a lot of fun doing so. We also managed to get a couple of nice b&w pictures of each other as well.

Excellent Large Format Film

I love this film, especially for pushing to 800 and 1600 ISO. Fora given print size, the large format allows one to use higher ISOs without noticing the grain.

dependable film, great images

I have always preferred Ilford films to Kodak and Fuji for black and white. HP5 is a time tested favorite of mine and the 4x5 format is great for this film

A really great film in Xtol,

Am a serious amature, shooting, processing and printing medium format and large format on a very regular weekly basis. This product, processed in straight Xtol at 68 deg is the one I depend on. The 400 ASA works fine landscapes with usual adjustments for yellow or orange filteration. Beautiful negatives that seem to print themselves. Try some and enjoy with straight Xtol.

a great, and affordable 4x5 sheet film

for a 4x5 sheet film, it loads really well and is consistent regarding midrange tones and contrast. The thickness of the film helps tremendously when loading developing tanks too. I do wish that Ilford offered their 3200 speed in this film, especially when using 4-stop contrast filters. Great price too.
