Questions & Answers

Shopper : What developer do you recommend to develop Ilford B&W film?FRANCISCO E : ID-11 or Perceptol 1:1.margaret b : D76 1to1ACCOUNTS P : I use HC 100, DILUTION B AT 68 DEGREES. You can also refer to the Massive Development Chart by film type and multiple suggestions for developers will be indicated.ANTHONY E : I use Kodak D76 diluted 1:1THOMAS G : I use either Kodak HC-110 or Ilfosol 3. HC-110 is better but last I checked Adorama didn't have it. You can get it from B and H or Unique (in NJ).
Cynthia O : Am I suppose to receive the packaging of the rolls of film already opened? I'm concerned.margaret b : Everytime I get film from this site, the box is open for the film but not the casing itself.THOMAS R : No, return it.THOMAS G : Absolutely not. I'd call the shop and ask for a replacement (at their expense). I buy lots of ten and the last package of ten rolls included two that had some minor shipping damage (thanks UPS) but the film was unopened, as usual, and intact. Sometimes you can buy rolls of Ilford at KM that are not in paper boxes but these are pulled (by staff) from a very large shipping box from Ilford and are sold very cheap ($3 each) as they are sold in bulk for pro photogs. Individual boxes like Adorama sells should never be opened.
Shopper : How would one get this film processed? Can you just take it to a place like Walgreens and have them process as you would, say, Kodak color film? Or do you need to go to a specialty store?OLIVER V : Walgreens probably won't do it. You will have to find a pro lab near you; there are still plenty around. Alternatively send it off to a place like NCPS and they will return it to you.CHARLES H : I process it myself with Sprint chemicals, but you can also take it to a commercial lab such as Chuck Kelton.KENT N : With film the most important thing is quality negatives. The Art of making prints from negatives can come in a variety of qualities, from the cheap non-artistic to handcrafted individual prints. Yes many retailers can send your film to commercial houses to be developed. Just like you can buy furniture at Walmart, but the more money you have and the more important your film photos are then I would suggest the high end camera stores, or even high end specialty photo printing stores which are even more rare now. You must get your negatives back as now you can buy a small device to convert your negatives to digital and print them with your own printer. Protect and save your negatives until you find the one you want to spend the real money on and have enlarged framed and honored There are even darkroom rentals if you want to try it yourself. Once you learn how to develop film yourself you will have an appreciation for the Art involved. So you first must decide how important are your photos to you and then decide how much money or time and talent you want to spend. The finest film printer can produce a print that exceeds Digital in quality and life like spirit.NICOLE B : Usually places like Walgreens use a color process. This film had to be processed in black and white chemicals. You either have to do it yourself, or send it out. If you have a specialty print shop in your area, ask them about pricing or if they can point you in the right direction.JEFF O : specialty store.ANTHONY E : You need to either send it to one of the photo labs that still exist (or find one locally) or else process it yourself which will require equipment and chemicals you may not have. Do a Google search on film processing lab and you should find what's available.THOMAS G : Years ago I had friends who owned photo shops who did b/w processing. No more. Now I must either send the film to Kodak (they do a great job) or do myself. If you're not into either option then use the C-41 process black and white (both Ilford and Kodak make it). I have opted to do it myself - I buy Kodak HC110 developer and Ilford rapid fix from Adorama and develop in my slopsink in the basement, using a daylight tank. It's a bit of work but quite gratifying. I print at a local for-rent darkroom. If you can't wait for Kodak and can't invest the time and money in the DIY method then use the color negative C41 process b/w film. It is not as contrasty as true b/w but it too is quite nice. And you get the prints back in an hour.JESSAMYN D : You would have to take it to a specality store or develop it your self. C-41 chemicals( For color film.) will not develop this film as it is a true black and white. CYNTHIA D : You need to go to a custom photo labGRANT P : Take it to a lab that caters to pros. One-hour photo places don't process this film. The pro labs are generally way less expensive than the label "pro lab" suggests. Also, you can pay them to develop and scan the film onto discs for you. That way, if you're looking to cheap out some, you can find the images you want to print on paper, or you can just print them like any other digital image...or view them on your computer screens. HP5-400 is great film, and you'll love the digital images. Even lousy shots look pretty cool on a computer screen.CLETE D : For maximum zones, process yourself, or a speciality place with specific instruction on the processing. This is an excellent film to push process giving you better zone separation. I recommend 1/2 stop to a full stop over.

HP5 consistent and flexible.

I enjoyed the consistency and flexibility of this film, especially when developed in Rodinal 1+50. I have tried boutique or small company films, but have had inconsistent results that won't do for assignment work or special family events. I keep coming back to this film, since it has never failed me.

Good Customer Service on Frustrating Experience

This is great film at a fair price. Unfortunately I made a huge order to stock up and then it got stolen off my porch. To their credit, adorama worked with me and stayed on top of UPS to get me a refund. Frustrating experience but Adorama handled it well and I would order from them again.

Great for medium-format shooting

The high ISO of Ilford HP5 offsets the handicap of slower medium format lenses, yet its tonal range is wide and its grain is well controlled.

Ideal for novice film photographer

From my perspective of a novice in film photography, Ilford HP5+ is an ideal b&w film. The exposure latitude is forgiving. The 400 ISO is versatile for a lot of lighting situations. Probably most importantly, it's pretty affordable. I feel comfortable experimenting a bit without being as worried as I would about wasting a roll of $18 film.

beautiful film weirdly packaged

beautiful film! I would suggest y'all start packaging it in metal canisters though, the entire roll is just inside an unsealed black bag inside of the box it comes in so it doesn't feel as well protected from the light as bulk rolls in metal canisters come! thanks though!

Great Film!

This is my go to film for general photography. It has great latitude and a consistent look. I have pushed it to 3200 with great results although I typically shoot it at box speed.

About Ilford HP-5 Plus

FEATURED REVIEWS

Most versatile film

By Sharon K.

Ilford's HP5+ is one of the best films on the market today. Versatility is a word that describes it well. It can be used for fine art photography, street photography, low light, and any number of other situations. With the correct developer you can achive ISO speeds up to 3200! I would not advise this film if you are looking for fine grain.

I really love the look of HP5

By Stephen A.

I've always heard Tri-X is the best black and white film, but to be perfectly frank, I really love the look of HP5. It's not as contrasty, so if high contrast is what you want, perhaps it's better to stick to the classic; but what I do notice is that there is a lot more tonal range in this film, and that it pushes very well. Shooting at speed renders clean images, articulate, detailed, not particularly grainy; pushed to 800 and the grain becomes more apparent but not in an unflattering way.

With its high-speed capabilities and fine grain quality, the Ilford HP5 Plus Black and White Film is a superior choice for a diverse range of photography genres. This ISO 400, 35mm film is perfect for capturing stunning black and white images in various lighting conditions, making it ideal for journalism, documentary, travel, sports, and indoor photography.

The HP5 Plus is renowned for producing negatives of exceptional sharpness and fine grain, ensuring your captured moments are always crystal clear. Its medium contrast feature enhances the depth and dimension in your photos, adding an artistic touch to your photography.

One of the standout features of this professional-grade film is its impressive response to push-processing. It can be rated up to EI 3200/36 Degree, providing flexibility and creative freedom to photographers.

The wide exposure latitude of the HP5 Plus makes it an excellent choice for photographers at all skill levels. Whether you're a beginner exploring the world of photography, a seasoned professional, or someone returning to film, this film caters to your needs.

Moreover, the HP5 Plus is versatile in its processing options. It can be processed in a wide range of developers using spiral tanks, deep tanks, and automatic processors.

In summary, the Ilford HP5 Plus Black and White Film, ISO 400, 35mm, 36 Exposures, offers a blend of high-quality, reliability, and versatility, making it a go-to choice for photographers seeking to elevate their black and white photography.
