I enjoyed the consistency and flexibility of this film, especially when developed in Rodinal 1+50. I have tried boutique or small company films, but have had inconsistent results that won't do for assignment work or special family events. I keep coming back to this film, since it has never failed me.

This is great film at a fair price. Unfortunately I made a huge order to stock up and then it got stolen off my porch. To their credit, adorama worked with me and stayed on top of UPS to get me a refund. Frustrating experience but Adorama handled it well and I would order from them again.

The high ISO of Ilford HP5 offsets the handicap of slower medium format lenses, yet its tonal range is wide and its grain is well controlled.

From my perspective of a novice in film photography, Ilford HP5+ is an ideal b&w film. The exposure latitude is forgiving. The 400 ISO is versatile for a lot of lighting situations. Probably most importantly, it's pretty affordable. I feel comfortable experimenting a bit without being as worried as I would about wasting a roll of $18 film.

What can you say about HP5?it?s my go-to BW film stock and the only one I buy bricks of these days. Beautiful tonality and flexible for whatever your style. Best all-arounder. And of course Adorama FTW.

HP5 is flexible with low grain and looks great with the Matt Day special- metered at 800 and pushed +2 in processing. Versatile, reliable, and virtually fool proof.

beautiful film! I would suggest y'all start packaging it in metal canisters though, the entire roll is just inside an unsealed black bag inside of the box it comes in so it doesn't feel as well protected from the light as bulk rolls in metal canisters come! thanks though!

This is my go to film for general photography. It has great latitude and a consistent look. I have pushed it to 3200 with great results although I typically shoot it at box speed.

Most versatile film
By Sharon K.
Ilford's HP5+ is one of the best films on the market today. Versatility is a word that describes it well. It can be used for fine art photography, street photography, low light, and any number of other situations. With the correct developer you can achive ISO speeds up to 3200! I would not advise this film if you are looking for fine grain.
I really love the look of HP5
By Stephen A.
I've always heard Tri-X is the best black and white film, but to be perfectly frank, I really love the look of HP5. It's not as contrasty, so if high contrast is what you want, perhaps it's better to stick to the classic; but what I do notice is that there is a lot more tonal range in this film, and that it pushes very well. Shooting at speed renders clean images, articulate, detailed, not particularly grainy; pushed to 800 and the grain becomes more apparent but not in an unflattering way.
Be prepared to capture every moment with the Ilford HP5 Plus Black and White Film, a high-quality and reliable choice for photographers who demand excellence from their 35mm film. This ISO 400 film is renowned for its versatility, making it ideal for a wide range of photographic applications, including action shots, available light scenarios, and general-purpose photography.
Crafted to deliver optimal results under a variety of lighting conditions, the HP5 Plus excels when processed in a broad spectrum of developers. Its fast ISO 400/27½ rating ensures sharp, clear images when exposed to daylight, while its fine grain structure, superior edge contrast, and exceptional sharpness contribute to images of remarkable quality. Photographers can expect prints that shine with outstanding brightness and a full tonal range, capturing the nuances of light and shadow with professional precision.
The HP5 Plus film goes beyond the capabilities of standard ISO 400/27½ film. By adjusting the development process with developers such as ILFORD ILFOTEC HC and ILFORD MICROPHEN, photographers can push the film's sensitivity up to an effective EI 3200/36. This extended range makes the HP5 Plus an indispensable tool for challenging conditions, including poor lighting and fast-moving subjects, where high emulsion sensitivity is crucial.
Compatible with all current processing systems, including those with standard short fixing and washing times, the HP5 Plus film does not require any special processing techniques. Its robust nature ensures outstanding results even under less-than-ideal processing conditions, and it tolerates a wide range of development variations.
Each roll of HP5 Plus 35mm film is housed in a DX Coded cassette, ensuring that the ISO 400/27½ speed is automatically set on compatible automatic 35mm cameras. The cassettes are designed for durability, with strong construction and firmly fixed end caps to withstand rough handling. The film's low friction characteristics and the tangential style of the cassette facilitate smooth film advance, conserving camera battery life.
The base tint of the HP5 Plus film simplifies print contrast assessment when viewed on a lightbox. Additionally, the film features bold frame numbering for full frames and letter indicators for half frames, making negative identification straightforward and efficient.
With a generous 36 exposures per roll and available in a bulk pack of 50, the Ilford HP5 Plus Black and White Film is a durable and cost-effective choice for both amateur and professional photographers who require a large volume of film without compromising on quality. Embrace the art of black and white photography with the confidence that comes from using a film that is as versatile and reliable as your creative vision.
