I really love the look of HP5
I've always heard Tri-X is the best black and white film, but to be perfectly frank, I really love the look of HP5. It's not as contrasty, so if high contrast is what you want, perhaps it's better to stick to the classic; but what I do notice is that there is a lot more tonal range in this film, and that it pushes very well. Shooting at speed renders clean images, articulate, detailed, not particularly grainy; pushed to 800 and the grain becomes more apparent but not in an unflattering way.

When I shoot in bright conditions and don't want grain, I go to Pan F Plus, also by Ilford. But when I want gritty BW photos in any light, I go for HP5 Plus. I'm a new user to this film, but it's already my go-to for BW shooting when speed is of the essence. Ilford claims HP5 Plus is formulated for push processing, and I believe it.
