Questions & Answers

Shopper : to develop one 8x10 negative how much working solution is required?NICHOLAS F : Once mixed, you basically you want enough fluid to fully immerse the paper without being wasteful. If you want to get an idea, fill your tray with water to a level you feel comfortable with, about a half inch? Then pour that into a grad cylinder for measurement. That'll be your final volume. Work backwards from there. Better to have too much fluid than to risk uneven development. Printing is all about trial and error, you can always start over. Negatives are less forgiving.
JUSTIN H : Does this developer work for Ilford Delta Pro 400 film?MICHAEL K : The website, DIGITALTRUTH.COM, has a development chart called the "Massive Dev Chart". This lists all developers and corresponding films. It's a really good resource.RICK J : yes it works well for all Illford films, for years i used D76, a few years ago i switched and have found it to be a better chemical for Illford rickROBERT W : I've had good results using this developer with Delta Pro 100 and 400. Outside shots grass, and leaves almost 3d looking.GREG S : Yes it does. Go to the Ilford website and query Ilfosol-3. On page 5 of the document you'll find the ratios, times, temps, etc.BRET M : Ilfosol 3 will work with any classic black and white film including Delta. The development times can be downloaded and printed from Ilford's website.JERRY K : I use it for HP5+ and FP4+, never used it for Delta Pro 400. However, there is a very informative PDF file you can download from Ilford's website (Google Ilfosol-3) that lists Ilfosol-3 development times for all Ilford films, including Delta 400 Pro. According to that chart, it will work fine, I notice the dev times for DP400 are only slightly different from HP5+ (for instance, 6.30 min for HP5+ vs 7.00 min for Delta Pro 400). Give it a try, I expect it will do a great job for you. it's about all I use for B&W any more. Most of my B&W is medium format, but Ilfosol-3 also works great with 35mm B&W. Very easy to mix/use, decent shelf life for a partially used bottle, and very forgiving of my admittedly sometimes imprecise development methods.JOHN M : Yes. See Ilford for times. Also you may want to search Massive Development Chart for other info.RICK T : Yes I use ilford 100 and 400 as well as tmax and trix and ilfosol-3 gives me very consistent results.TAYLOR H : Yes, I've used it with that film.
Erica F : Are ilofsol 3 and ilfosol S the same? the bottle says 3 but the description reads as "s"NIKILYN K : Ilford describes Ilfosol S as an "enhanced formulation" of Ilfosol 3. They are very similar, and used in the same way.CHARLES A : Hello Erica, I do not believe they are the same. The type "S" is meant to be used with Ilfords exclusive SPEED processes. This process is for reduced processing times and to give very rapid results from inital exposure to final print. The developing times are similar but not exactly the same and the contrast seems different. I don't think the type S is still manufactured and I no longer use it.JERRY K : I have used the "Ilfosol S" development concentrations and times wherever they appeared in charts but using Ilfosol 3, and have never had a problem. So Yes, I think there's no practical difference other than I believe the newest version (Ilfosol 3) has a better bottle life after opening. I like it, very easy to mix and use, and pretty forgiving in the darkroom.AARON B : I believe Ilfosol 3 is a replacement for Ilfosol S because Ilfosol S had a such a short shelf life. So, as expected, Ilfosol 3 has a longer shelf life and Ilfosol S is no longer made and the description is probably an older one.

Good single-shot developer

First developer purchased since returning to BW. Seems like a good all purpose developer. I've got Rodinal backordered so this is more than adequate to hold me over until it arrives.

Looks nicer than HC-110 (imo)

Using the 1+9 dilution the results I have compared to, say, HC-110 are more detailed. A little less contrast on the same film, but in my opinion, a better result. Depending on the size of your tank, this can process a couple dozen rolls, easy. Wear gloves when handling. The labeling on back says some ingredients are suspected to cause cancer. (No, really.)

Great Developer

I recommend this product. It gives great low grain results with ASA 100 and 125 film.

Worthy

I bought a bottle of Ilfosol 3 to try alongside my usual HC-110. I used it 1:14 with 120 Tmax 400, Delta 400, HP5+, Tri-X, and Tmax 100. Also a few rolls of 35mm. It took me 3.5 months to use up the bottle and consistency of development was fine from the first roll to the last. The negatives are sharp with smooth grain. I haven't decided yet if it will supplant HC-110 but it's a promising developer.
