I? ve been shooting paper negatives with a pinhole camera and processing the ilford multigrade negatives in the multigrade developer. Works great and easy to mix small batches.

It is a decent paper developer. The concentrate does store well. And unopened, it has a long shelf life. Though I do not recommend doing so, I have used up what I had purchased in 2001, opened it in February of 2021 and it still worked fine in spite of being a bit oxidized.

I have found Ilford's multigrade RC papers to be truly excellent for both display and for scanning to convert to digital. Since Ilford makes this developer to match the chemistry of their papers, I have used nothing else for years. It works very well. You can get black blacks and brilliant whites, both of which contain detail (assuming you use proper filtration). In short, the combination produces fine results. The only negative is that, once opened, the developer left in the bottle does not last very long. That is why I purchase the small bottles. A busier lab could use larger bottles and save a little cash.

Now that Dektol is no longer available, I am using Ilford’s developer and I like it very much. Arnold Menke

So much easier than mixing Dektol, as in the old days.

Adorama is one of the few places that still sell B&W (Ilford) chemicals. Prices are decent and shipping (standard) time was reasonable.

I've used this developer over the years in the classroom, and after trying several other less expensive brands, I've returned to Ilford. It gives better blacks and better contrast, especially in our setting.

Are you in search of a high-quality, economical developer for your photography needs Look no further than the Multigrade Paper Developer 500 Milliliter. This versatile developer is primarily recommended for use with MULTIGRADE papers, including both resin coated and fiber base enlarging papers, making it a staple in any photographer's darkroom.
Supplied as a liquid concentrate, this developer is not only economical but also easy to use. The recommended dilution is 1 part developer to 9 parts water, allowing you to mix only as much as you need for each printing session, optimizing efficiency and reducing waste.
When used with MULTIGRADE IV RC DELUXE and MULTIGRADE III RC RAPID papers, the image appears after a mere 10 seconds, with complete development achieved in just 1 minute at 68½F (20½C). This rapid development time produces prints with identical contrast and maximum density to those processed for two minutes in a conventional tray developer.
For MULTIGRADE FB papers, the image appears after 35 seconds, with a development range of 1 - 2 - 3 minutes at 68½F (20½C). Even with extended development up to 6 minutes, there's no noticeable change in contrast or fog, ensuring consistent, high-quality results.
For added economy and greater development control, the Multigrade developer can also be diluted at 1+14. When diluted, it remains in good condition in an open tray for two working days at dilution 1+9 and for one working day at dilution 1+14.
The longevity of this developer is another key feature. Unopened bottles of MULTIGRADE developer will keep for approximately 24 months, while tightly capped half-full bottles will maintain their quality for up to 6 months. One liter of working strength developer can process up to 50 8x10 inch fiber base prints and 100 resin coated prints, making it a cost-effective choice for both professional and amateur photographers.
In summary, the Multigrade Paper Developer 500 Milliliter offers a blend of quality, economy, and versatility that's hard to beat. Whether you're a seasoned professional or a budding enthusiast, this developer is a reliable choice for all your black and white photography needs.
