So..above the lens or below the lens? always a good question when it comes to multi grade contrast filters. My preference is above the lens, intros case a Omega D5 condenser that has a drawer above the condensers to slide in a 6x6 filter. A custom filter holder is also a great addition, not commercially available but a good 3D printed design is available at tim@moocowproductions.org. These filters where backordered but shipped as soon as they got back in stock - Adorama delivers!!

Not an easy product to find. Needed these MG filters for an Omega D2 to use with Ilford's paper. Glad to find them and at a reasonable cost.

The price is indeed higher than the small set, but after using the smaller set I think the larger filters are better. In my Beseler enlarger the small filters are placed in between the negative and the lens. I have found that they can get scratches and fingerprints that compromise the final print. The larger filters are placed between the light source and the negative. Any degradation of the filter should not be magnified through the lens.

In the dark room, little to no errors can be made and still receive a decently good picture. With that said, using this filters reduced the amount of time spent, and cost me more money than the small [$]set. If you are a film student just getting started into photography, purchase the cheaper set. You would be much better of, it saves time and money.

Hard to find

The Ilford Multigrade 6x6 is a professional-grade photography filter set, designed with versatility and ease of use in mind. This set comprises twelve distinct filters, each numbered from 00 to 5 in half-step increments. The numbering system is intuitive, with the lowest number representing the softest contrast, allowing photographers to effortlessly adjust their images' tonal range.
These high-quality filters come in two standard sizes: 8.9x8.9cm (3 1/2x3 1/2 inches) and 15.2x15.2cm (6x6 inches), making them suitable for a wide array of lenses. For those requiring larger dimensions, 30x30cm (11.8x11.8 inches) filters are available through special order.
One of the standout features of the Ilford Multigrade 6x6 filters is their adaptability. They can be positioned either above or below the lens and can be custom cut to fit any enlarger filter drawer. This flexibility makes them an invaluable tool for photographers of all levels.
Moreover, the Multigrade filters eliminate the need for complex calculations when switching from one filter to another. The exposure time remains consistent for filters 00 through 3 1/2, while it doubles for filters 4 to 5. This user-friendly design ensures that photographers can focus on capturing the perfect shot, rather than wrestling with technicalities.
In summary, the Ilford Multigrade 6x6 filter set is a colorful, durable, and high-quality choice for photographers seeking to enhance their work's contrast and overall visual impact.
