Q&A

Questions & Answers

Ciara W : Can I use this fixer with Adorama brand developer?MICHAEL C : You should have no issues - IF you rinse your film properly before fixing. This is a best-practice for any dev and fix combo, as it extends the life of the fixer. For printing, if you want your fix to last longer, rinse the paper for a few seconds after the stop bath - or if you use water as a stop, use a big tray and change it often.REBECCA S : I don't see why not. Developer is washed out and done with by the time you Fix... it shouldn't matter which brands you use, I think.KENNETH R : Probably. I've never used Adorama brand developer, but you can generally use different brands of developer/fixer together. Manufacturers don't recommend it, so if you have a complaint about the results, they most likely won't have much sympathy.FARUK U : Yes.DANIEL P : I would assume so, I've never used the Adorama developer but I've used this with several different developers and it always worked great. Never had a fixing issue with film or paper :-)
Shopper : what are the mixing instructions?PHILLIP G : Dilution is 1:4 or 1:9. Anything you want to know is available from Ilford's web site. ilfordphotoEVEARAD S : One part fixer, three parts water. I generally mix 100ml fixer and water to a total of 400ml. RC papers fix for 30 seconds. Fiber base papers fix for 1 minute.JASON R : Mixes are 1+4, meaning for 1 liter of working solution you mix 200ml of fixer with 800ml of distilled water or 1+9, meaning for 1 liter of working solution you mix 100ml of fixer with 900ml of distilled water. I usually use the 1+9 mix.THOMAS G : The ratio is 4:1. I usually mix up 22 ounces (for a two reel tank) of working solution: 17.5 oz water, 4.5 oz fixer. You can use it repeatedly until it fails to clear your test scrap. This is enough for most two reel daylight tanks. Ilford's website has a pdf with mixing instructions... The temperature of the fixer should match the temp of the developer and rinse as much as possible. In the winter I use a bowl of hot water (into which I place a measuring cup of fixer) to get the fix to 68F (20C). In the summer I stick a frozen ice pack into the measuring cup. This fixer is easy to use and yields good results.SCOTT M : Ilford has PDF of instructions if you search for "Ilford Rapid Fixer" The dilution depends on your use but I typically used a 1+ 4 dilution for everything. So for 1 gallon of working strength fixer solution I would mix 25 oz of fixer concentrate with 103 oz of water and stir thoroughly. Then also make sure to re agitate the solution before use if it has sat for more than a day or so.GABRIEL B : I will refer you to their Fact Sheet listed on their website: look for Ilford Rapid Fixer on the web. This media didn't allow me to post a link to the PDF file. Recommended dilutions are 1+4 and 1+9 depending upon the application. Great fixer and very inexpensive ! Regards, Gabriel

Fixes FAST, easy to use

It fixes fast, is easy to mix, and is liquid concentrate not powder so it's easier to use than something like kodak's fixer Did I mention it's fast

Solid Fixer - Can't go wrong with this one.

Just getting back into film processing and found this fixer to be a good choice for my needs. Makes 5 liters though I am only mixing 1 liter at a time.

Best B&W Film Fixer

This fixer is for the novice and the professional as far as film and paper fixers go. I use it when developing B&W film and it always does a great job.

old standby, excellent as always

So glad i can purchase chemistry online! Been using Ilford Rapid Fixer, probably since the 90s. Infrequently working in film, so I don't mind purchasing 1L bottles. Great product, stores well.

Great all-purpose fixer

Hat's off to Ilford for keeping film alive. This is a great product and very long lasting. I use it for film and paper in all my general printing (I do use homebrew fixer for lith printing and bromoil work). Lasts forever in the bottle, and when mixed for paper or film, the reduced solution lasts a long time if stored in an airtight bottle with a squirt of dust-off gas. It's a great product for film and paper and widely available, and the price is great.

The only Fixer I use

I use this for all my 35mm and 120 film. It's the only one that lasts a good while. The quantity is just the right amount for average development use.

Great general purpose fixer

I use Ilford Rapid Fixer for both film and prints. The fact that it is a non-hardening fixer for todays film and paper is great. I've used Kodak's fixer (which has the hardner) and it makes it a pain because the wash times are very long. I've ever only had one RC print not wash out all the fixer and ended up with the yellow stains. But that was all my fault for being in too much of a hurry and thinking I could get away with a quick rinse. So you do have to rinse properly with this fixer, or any for that matter. This is a good fixer and have not experienced and short comings.

Easy to Use, Works Great

I mix it 1:4 in distilled water and fix my negatives for 10 minutes. It works great. It doesn't smell too bad either (for fixer anyway). Used with PanF+, FP4+, HP5+, Delta3200, TriX & TMAX so far with no issues.
